Our 2018 GOTY
« on: January 01, 2019, 01:33:53 PM »
We usually have one of these threads each year, and I usually talk about games I've played this year rather than ones that came out this year because I generally run years behind.  This year was tough so honourable mentions go to Zelda BOTW, Mario Odyssey, Titanfall 2, Uncharted Lost Legacy and Into the Breach.  All incredible games and on another year could have topped my list.

This year though I'm going for Slay the Spire.  An absolutely brilliant game that I can see myself going back to again and again.  Practically a perfect game to scratch my itches.

Only 3 games I played that came out this year were Monster Hunter World, Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition, and Yakuza Kiwami 2.  Of the 3, I prefer the latter for some really satisfying scenes that harken back to Yakuza 0 which was #2 for me last year.  Monster Hunter World ate up a bunch of time, but I can't say I really enjoyed that much of it.  NWN:EE is basically just NWN, no improvements other than it works, but it scratched that nostalgia for me.

As far as games from previous years, I played Mass Effect: Andromeda (which was ok, certainly not as good as the other MEs but it didn't offend me), Infamous Second Son (extremely annoying protagonist, very short), Darkest Dungeon (tedious, RNG hell, but at least the narrator is great), Tales of Berseria (several story and character problems, but still pretty good overall), Yakuza Kiwami (not as good as 0 or Kiwami 2), and Planescape: Torment: Enhanced Edition (lives up to the hype, extremely interesting story and setting, although I used a guide to get through some of the obtuse quest design).  I've still been playing a lot of Diablo 2, Starcraft 2, replayed Bloodborne and Dragon's Dogma, dabbled a bit in Street Fighter V.

At least for me, 2018 was a crap year for gaming (and in my life), but there's plenty coming out in 2019 to look forward to.

I haven't really played much new that wasn't on the Nintendo Switch. So with that limit, I would have to say Super Mario Oddesssy, even over BotW.

Assassin's Creed: Odyssey is my GOTY. And Kassandra is one of the best female video game protagonists I've ever seen.

Currently playing CrossCode, which is a very solid contender too. And I don't even usually like pixel graphics games.

I think I need to review the game thread to see what I played.  Never a good sign as nothing truly stands out.

  • Borderlands 2 -- doesn't count as this is an old game.  But I played it a ton and loved it
  • Borderlands the PreSequel - counts, and it was good but nothing amazing.
  • I played all three Tomb Raiders including the new one and had a great time with all of them.  But the last is the only one that might count for this thread and it was missing something
  • Soma -- Really liking this game.  About half way through it.  It has a serious flaw but I am looking forward to making it through the game.
  • D3 - On Ps4 -- Enjoying it but again an old game.
  • Far Cry 4 -- not as good as 3.

Unless I remember something that I forgot I would have to say none are deserving.

In terms of new games I played (I did a bunch of replays), there's only one clear standout - Civ VI. Which is excellent, and I will probably waste innumerable hours this coming year playing it.

I picked up Endless Legend in the Steam Winter Sale, but it hasn't grabbed quite the same way. NHL 19 has been fun too, although I'm fairly terrible at it.

To be so civilized one must tell civil lies...

Elite Dangerous is easily the game I've played most in 2018 and continues to grow and improve. The upgrade to lighting in the latest patch has the game looking even more stunning, especially in VR on my 2080ti FE. The game also continues to surprise me and periodically alarm the shit out of me, because having a huge ship suddenly drop out of supercruise straight in your path is not a calm inducing event. It is BSG as hell though!

I'll be over here crying with my gtx970.  Need an entire new rig really as my CPU would bottleneck an rtx or a high end 10xx :(

I have a 1080. There's no way to justify the expense of moving to a 2080. But I'm definitely planning on a CPU/mobo/RAM upgrade this summer, if all goes according to plan. :D

If I hadn't come into some inheritance money, I'd never have got it and stuck with my 1070ti. But, the money did appear and whilst most of it when on boring necessary stuff, I promised myself I would get myself a nice shiny graphics card.
