Ha.  40ish is hyper good.  I did some reading after your post and there are some real limitation because of line of sight but in optimal conditions it is faster than fiber.  Plus popcorn.   :P

I have an order number from Best Buy.

I might have succeeded.

https://www.bestbuy.com/site/nvidia-geforce-rtx-3070-8gb-gddr6-pci-express-4-0-graphics-card-dark-platinum-and-black/6429442.p?skuId=6429442

That is the one I was able to add.

And I have confirmation email and estimated pick up of 11/4.

edit: Annndddd....sold out.  The pages I had ready now all show that is not available.  Part of me won't believe my luck until I have the thing in my hands.

Fuckin-A!  Pardon the crudity, but there are enthusiastic-type peoples here and I just want to say, me too!

Sssith, microwave internet does not cause popcorn, but it does get latency down from the high 300s to forty-something.  We're out of town and out of our minds, so no clue if that is close to a good glass fibre number or not, but it is SO much better than the satellite connection that we had.

Liquid Evil (That's MISTER doctor Liquid Evil to you, sir!), my son is 7 now and the home-schooling is going pretty well.  One unbelievably great thing we have to help outlast the self-imposed isolation in the time of the coronavirus is a pool.  Up until a week ago, we were in the water just about every day.  This has a hidden benefit because the wife unit has not previously seen the upside of a cement pond, but it has practically been a requirement for maintaining sanity.
Um.  There might also be a gigantor floating pineapple.

How are you faring in your goal to kick ass at life?  I find that aim inspiring!

Jeff, I hope all is well with you.  Always enjoyed our Diablo conversations.  Where are you now?  What's new, amigo?

My son describes my covid hair as "silver blond" (with a minimum of coaching) and, despite being buzzed down to the scalp in December, it is now well into my eyes.  I have a set of clippers, so no excuses, but am thinking of growing it out until there's a vaccine, or at least until we have a new administration.

Cheers!

Slowly working through the Yakuza games.  Finished 3 a few weeks ago, over halfway through 4 now, which thankfully provides a little variety because it has four different protagonists.  The way the plot weaves between the four of them has been pretty great so far, although there haven't been any new mini-games worth sinking time into so it's a bit of a slog outside of the story.

Been working through the 3 prestiges for all the co-op commanders I own in SC2, although some I may not bother with as the bonuses don't seem worth it.  Zagara P1 was probably the most fun, just a seemingly endless wave of Banelings and Scourges, although I'm partial to Karax P2 for making his army affordable and Kerrigan P3 for giving her a decent anti-air option.

So, AMD did their release hype presentation thing today.

If you don't care about raytracing and just want raw performance, you could look into a 6800 (competes with 3070) or 6800XT (competes with 3080) in November. No signs that availability will be any better, but more cards = more chances, amirite? The 6xxx cards look to be cheaper than the equivalent Nvidia cards, so that's something. You do give up DLSS and raytracing, though. I mean, technically the AMD cards can do raytracing, but they don't have dedicated hardware for it. They brute force it instead, so performance is... not good.

Just something to look into.

According to this site the time of the release is 6amPST.  Or 1pm GMT.  Or 9am EST.  No clue if accurate but I have nothing else to go on.  So I guess I will be up early on Thursday.

What a crappy time for my video card to have died.

Yep, truly shitty time to be needing a GPU. :(

I just keep playing BG3, even with just one act and 4 levels. It's not perfect, I have complaints, and I've already started modding it to work how I want... but I still keep coming back to it. So good.

Since my video card died I have been playing Vampyr on the PS4.  Very mixed feelings about the game.  First the port seems to be pretty crappy.  Controls are meh, graphics are meh.  Fighting is best described as stodgy.  Story wise it is interesting if a bit confining.  That is the main thing that has kept me going.  I am not sure if I am going to want to continue on at this point.
