General Discussion / Re: Aussie Bushfires
« on: January 29, 2020, 10:38:22 AM »
Yeah I had been considering a post about this a while back. Sounds like the number of fires and shear volume of land burnt is just insane compared to previous years and at least 6 times the size burnt in the Amazon rain forest.

I saw this video which freaked me out
One moment the fire is in the distance while they are driving in something that appears post apocalyptic. Next thing the fire is ON them and everywhere. Apparently if the temperature reaches a certain point everything flammable just ignites.

Amazing how those trucks are built!

Here in nz we have had smoke blow over from the bushfires and itís just an annoyance but Iíve never remembered that in any other year.
Also the average temperature in all of My country vs Australia is just so much less even though some bits latitude is the same

one of the reasons I haven't properly played D2 in over a year.

Going back to replay favourite games, as a one off, or some people do regularly is a thing.  Its nice to see if you can find things you missed the first time, see what you forgot, maybe remind you of those things you'd shut out of your mind.  Similar to say a new movie coming out from a franchise and rewatching the previous ones to hype up and get you back in the zone.

I'm always having a few games on the fly, a mixture of:
go back to something I started and forgot about
something I started and need to get past
something brand new that I know of and want to try it.
something that I have no idea of and want to give it a show

Some examples:
Super 3d Noahs Ark (from the Wolf 3D engine), but having a blast and have more campaign to play, then replay on hard mode for more achievements.  There is an end point ahead, some replaying but I'm ok with that.

Show with your dad simulator: A bit of a joke of a game, but some fun, and if I have a few free minutes something to do to try to unlock the next content.

Cogs: puzzle game, started, lots more content to do when I'm in the mood for that genre.

I have a few various FPS games I have to finish the campaign, or just finish extra stuff, a few serious sam, Duke Nukem Forever, Black Mesa when the achievements are out,  Cod Blops 2, two other COD games to finish the campaigns. Bioshock franchise ..

The result is something such as getting to 100% in Borderlands TPS, Torchlight 2 etc is quite far down my priority list for now.  Variety is keeping me going.  I had some frustration in Duke 3d, but I've finished that content, got 100% achievements, now I've moved on happy.

Just saw a sale for 45% off BL3 at Indie Gala!    only 4 months in and close to 50% off.  What will the steam launch price be .. how long before a price drop there.

Makes you wonder.  88% of less sales, or 70% of a heap more ..

interesting.   I can't remember all of BL2, but as I replayed through BL1 recently I think it has an edge over 2 for me.  Maybe the nostalgia and brick.

I find they all have maybe too many missions/side missions and its all a bit samey.    The main thing that is keeping me away from TPS is that its a time sink, and those hours could instead be used in MULTIPLE other games.

I have a question, why did you put over 1000 hours into BL2, but only 50 into the pre-sequel?

Hard mode can be a bit of a dick with limited health. I'm up to the second (and final) black ops fight. You can't see them at all, then they start shooting you multiple times.  I'm out of some of the best ammo.   Should be in Xen tonight .. maybe finish it depending on time free.

So after years of buffing they want you to get to 990 kills then close the game?

Yes I have!!! And Iíve played up to xen getting the 25 current available achievements.

This is the version of half life 1 sssith should play. Hl2 engine and looks amazing. Many areas with extra detail or slight tweaks and extra rooms compared to the original.  But for me it was a double edged sword. There were bits of omg this is brand new I have to look! Vs Iím looking forward to ... oh they just changed something I enjoyed and looked forward to.

The major set pieces you can recognise and work out what they are inspired by.

Iíll do the alien levels once the next patch hits and achievements are live

Last night I heard about Half Life Decay for the first time

So it started as Playstation only .. but some years later a mod for PC came out.

It was made by Gearbox, but before they were full asshole.
Built for split screen coop .. but can be soloed

TWO FEMALE protaganists.,

So I'll try it out before getting to Half Life 2.

Free half life for two months

They have the same idea as me. Last night I got to the start of apprehension which is the chapter of the giant fish and later the black ops troops

I forgot half life uplink. The demo of hl1 which was different content. Iíve been on a 90s FPS binge so hl1 isnít too old for me. Iíll even play with original textures.

Thanks for the portal ideas. Been ages since Iíve been through portal2. Played some portal 2 with my daughter

With the hype around the upcoming Alyx, and the realisation I  won't be actually playing it any time soon, it got me thinking that about from the Black Mesa mod, I haven't played Half Life 1 or 2 in some time.

So to rectify that, I'm thinking of redoing these

HL1 Hazard Course
Half Life 1 (yes even Xen)
Hazard Course for security guards
Half Life Blue Shift (quite short and not as fun as the others
Boot camp
Half Life Opposing Force

Half Life 2
Half Life 2 ep 1
Half Life 2 ep 2

And then be sad that I got to the end of the journey.

So great games, but the best access is one before EA's Origin, a game that I'll never get unless I buy a playstation, and a game with no release date on a platform I use.

How trollish of you to suggest how the grass is greener on the other side :P

As for me, over the weekend I finished Poker Night at the Inventory.  A telltale game ... so not for sale anymore.  I'm not a poker fan and for me "finished" was getting all the achievements.  I spent quite a few hours rerolling the start to get 3 kings and win.

Also recently I finished Keen Dreams on Steam (also not for sale anymore, the original developer melted down and posted lots of hate to GabeN for some reason ..  While the game isn't as fun as Keen 4-6, it was still fun, and the challenges of getting all points on each level made me play the game in a way I didn't originally back in the 90s.

One game that is still for sale and I "finished" recently was Day of Defeat Source which is an MP game and as we know almost all MP games die and this is ancient.  I was able to play with bots and had lots of fun killing them with the various weapons.  For my final achievement I couldn't arrange it with bots, so i asked for help. I had a guy from Germany offer to help me .. and he CHOSE to play on the Axis side .. lol

not many in comparison to PC gaming might care about VR for now, but there is a tonne that have been hanging out for half life 3 for ages.  This isn't half life 3, but it is in the half life world, it is a new step up and will be a big deal.  valves $1000 headset is sold out,  This could be something to give VR that next big kick

I've been contemplating asking a friend if i can go to his place to play it, watch him play with his setup or just check out a good Lets Play.  You only get one first experience though, so ideally i'd play it, but thats impossible with my current hardware.

it doesn't clash with new Half Life that way ..sure its VR only, but the first half life in over a decade ..
