Why don't we have a 2019 reading list?  And why is Butch not on here?!?!

i thought about starting a new thread this year but wasn't sure the activity level warranted it. butch hasn't been around here for years.

Driving through the UP of michigan, passed a billboard for a strip club called “the Oval Office”, complete with a presidential seal. Thanks, trump.

16. The Power, Naomi Alderman, 4/5
17. Vigilance, by Robert Jackson Bennett, 1/5

Finished The Power and Vigilance, which are each high on the list of most depressing books i've read in a while. both near future scifi. The Power's a take on what happens when women manifest a mutation that reverses the power dynamic between men and women; "what if men were suddenly at a huge physical disadvantage?". overall not an optimistic take on human nature.

Vigilance was even less optimistic. main character is the producer of a reality TV show that incites/follows mass shootings, judging the performance (or lack thereof) of the victims. the 'it takes a good guy with a gun to stop a bad guy with a gun' thing. ish... i was striking out at the library and didn't want to leave without a book, ended up with this. Felt a lot like "the running man" told from the perspective of the antagonist. well written and a fast read but felt gross finishing it, which is not a huge leap to assume was the point. before reading this, I had been eyeing another series (the divine cities?) by the same author but if that's as dour as this was, will probably skip it.

Have Finder by Suzanne Palmer and Too like the lightning by Ada Palmer up next. didn't notice both authors had the same last name until just now...

there are a few shrines (ammo reload) in some dlc that take eridium (in the 2-4 eridium range iirc). the shrines can be handy but if i'd been better about using the blackmarket to increase ammo capacity i probably would not have needed the shrines at all.

there are also some chests where you can supposedly buy a better drop chance, aren't there? can't remember if they take eridium or just money, though.

i've been slowly working on some main story quests, mixing in side quests, and intermittently going back to try to kill the demonic sorcerer. came close several times where i thought i was in a groove and he'd suddenly 1-hit me. finally got him earlier today, hit lvl63 shortly thereafter. got a legendary shotgun from finishing the quest but it's painfully slow to actually use. have found a number of other legendaries but nothing that seems worth keeping (another bunny, an SMG from scorch, a shield that seems vastly inferior to a bee).

Picard trailer.

so i'm excited about this, even though the trailer's more spoilery than it should be.

another satisfying entry in the Expanse series. clearly have several more books in mind.

Read a book by a local author; mystery in/around an Ojibwe reservation in northern Minnesota. apparently a later entry in a series; good summer read, would read more but probably wouldn't go far out of my way to search them out.

Read the next book in Stross's Laundry series. less self-contained than most of the previous ones here. substantial plot development for the series as a whole, but the ending here was abrupt and not particularly satisfying. more books to come here as well.

about a third the way into The Power. good opener.

i stuck mostly to story missions for normal and entirely so with tvhm. currently goofing off doing side stuff in uvhm, which i think has definitely helped keep it fresh. have been working through the tiny tina dlc but stuck at the demonic wizard atm. will probably have to scrounge some better gear before trying again.

"explicit unkempt harold". guessing that adds weapon zoom? not sure what's base on it.

used the harold last night to try out the tiny tina quest and a bee shield dropped from a treant. gather that's where it usually comes from. felt too lucky on the first pass through that content and so soon after getting the gun. lvl55 bee (i'm currently 54) so haven't been able to equip it yet. had to set the quest aside after running into a lvl58 orc captain or something. could barely scrape him.

very close to selling the bunny.

just hit lvl53, have been running a section of frostburn canyon where there are a number of decent chests (and half the time a loot goliath) in a relatively small area. just got an unkempt harold from the loot goliath. holy crap is it a game changer.

got a bustling bunny a while ago. have killed myself a number of times with that one...
