Yep, story is all over the place, and I'm kinda not paying much attention to it since it tells you in big banner letters what you need to do.  You get to a certain place and a thing comes up saying FIND AND KILL GREESHOBOO or something.  Or you talk to someone who literally has paragraphs of text to read to you, but you can skip it and get a banner saying GO TO THE MOUNTAIN which is what the NPC was taking like ten minutes to get to.  So it's awkward.  But the gameplay is okay.

Yeah so I should probably change my "forgone conclusion" to "probably" or even "maybe".  My son got me hooked on Path of Exile.  I'd heard of it, heard it was fun (reviews are actually quite mixed, but if lots of people found it run, I might too, regardless of how many people don't), so I checked it out.

The past week, I've been spending what normally would have been Diablo time playing Path of Exile.  I'm finally figuring the damned game out and have a Level 41 Rogue or Amazon or whatever they are in that game.  The bow babes.  Apparently there are 10 acts and I just finished Act 3, so I might be at this a while and skip the D3 season.

Interesting.  Since I still play D3 anyway, it's a foregone conclusion that I'll rebirth a Seasonal character.  Just trying to figure out which one.  I usually play Demon Hunters, but Natalya's is one of my least favorite sets.  Barbarian IK is always fun.

Diablo 3 / Re: D3 on PS4

I tried to play some PlayStation with my son once, years ago.  I couldn't do it.  There are buttons on top, on the side, on the front, on the back, on the bottom, and possibly others I never found.  Obviously they each do something different, but presumably similar to what the same button does in other, similar games.  The last time I played a console game was original Sonic on Sega Genesis.  In other words, I had no fucking idea what I was doing, so the fact that the buttons do certain "logical" things was lost on me.  Everything was lost on me.  I had not grown up with consoles as they went from one button and a joystick to a joystick in each hand plus 115 buttons, so to say that it was overwhelming is an understatement.

I forgot what my point was.  I think it was something about being better at what you're used to.  When I play D3 on the PC, I have no problem with a mouse in one hand and my other on the keyboard doing all the "other hand" things you need to do, but Mrs. Orbert is blown away by even that.  She's fine with the mouse, but if you have to hit those 1-2-3-4 keys too much, forget it (yes, this does severely limit the builds she can play effectively).

I never did find an SOJ.  Stupid ring.

I remember right after I got Diablo II, sitting down with the player's guide to D2 (I think it was BradyGames?) and reading all those tables in the back that listed items and sets and all the mods.  Stone of Jordan with +1 to All Skills just sounded so amazing!  Yeah, when I find them, I gotta make sure to hang on to them.  That the odds were so low that you could play for 10 years and never see one didn't even occur to me; I just figured it was an item in the game, you play long enough, you'll find one.

I think I found one eventually, but this was D2X after all the power creep and you could get +2 to All Skills on items or as set bonuses and +1 to entire skill trees on charms and all kinds of other stuff.  That +1 to All that seemed so amazing was so tame by then.

Pixel Dungeon and Risk.  They're just there in case I find myself waiting in line somewhere or otherwise have a few minutes to kill.

I can't imagine playing something in real time that requires any degree of control, on a phone.

Diablo 3 / Re: Diablo 4?

I think they've reached the point where they just don't know what to do next.  The Diablo storyline, such as it is, is getting harder and harder to follow-up on.  I thought D2 took the original Diablo lore and expanded on it in an interesting way, and while the D3 story wasn't as well received overall, they took us further, gave us the other Lesser Evils, and added more to the lore.  Let's forget for a moment the retconning they did.

My point is that a "real" Diablo 4 would need to not only be a good game in and of itself, something I'm not sure Blizz even knows how to do anymore, but also continue the story in some kind way that isn't completely ridiculous.  And where can they take the story now?  It's done.  Cain is dead.  Tyreal was rebuilding the Horadrim again, but Lorath was lame.  And the buy-once-play-forever business model just doesn't bring the cash.

So they locked themselves in a room and came up with "What if we take Diablo to other platforms?"  Diablo Playstation.  Diablo Switch.  Diablo Go.

It may be time to just close this chapter.  I still play D3, and altogether I got many, many hours of entertainment out of Diablo games.  It was a good run.  But I just don't see where they can go from here and still call it Diablo.

Amazing. So the "multiple Diablo-related projects" were Diablo for Switch and Diablo for Mobile.  I can't even think of two things I'd be less interested in.  I mean yeah, I bagged on MMORPG Diablo but even that I thought would be PC-based.

Diablo Go

Me too.  The pay-to-play model is not for me, nor is the whole MMORPG (did I spell that right?) thing, free or not.  But I'll pay for a game, and if I get several hours of fun out of it, then that's a good return on investment.  With the Diablo games, it's more like several hundred hours, so unquestionably good as far as I'm concerned.

If, like with the Necromancer, they add another character and/or some new areas for $15, sure.  More of the same, yeah, but if it's fun, it's worth it.

Playing UE, probably my favorite build, but RNG was really starting to annoy me.  Running T13, GR62 or so for days, still no decent jewelry, no Ancient weapon, and no Dawn for the perma-Vengeance.  After many Reforges, finally got an Ancient Yang's... with no +Vitality and no +Discipline.  WTF?  Crappy rolls everywhere, so I switched to M6 for a while.

Ancient Manticore dropped on my first Rift, so that was cool.  Tweaked the gear a bit, used a Ramaladni's, running T13's alright, was gonna try some GR's, then a Dawn dropped.  Dilemma.  I was kinda getting into the M6, which is second-favorite build, but I had to see what I could do with my UE setup, so I switched back. Cubed the Dawn, looked, and I had exactly 50 Forgotten Souls.  Cubed my "spare" Yang's... Ancient!  +11 Discipline (good enough), but no Vitality.  So I had to burn some stuff from my Stash to get some souls so I could get +Vitality on my Yang's.  Got like 968 or something, good enough.  Used my other Ramaladni's, ready to rock.  Except I was already late for work, so I guess we'll see how he does tonight.

Also, gems are all rocking, thanks to Sigilstun sharing four Goblin Vaults with me the other night.  I like them big shiny squares.

The mascot was shooting one of those T-shirt cannons, but he was holding it backwards, so it shot the T-shirt into his gut, or possibly his groin.
