I was happily playing Witcher 3 when my computer blue screened. Now when I power it on the fan spin but nothing else. Not sure what to do next. If I hand to guess it would be motherboard problem (short, burnout), power supply failure, video card. I would guess one of the first two.
I am going to try to figure out how old the computer is but I would guess close to five, certainly more than three.
Any suggestions welcome.
-
Sudden death, ouch. 3-5 years isn't super old.
PSU seems likely for a sudden death, but the blue screen bit is weird. I'd expect PSU failure to be an instant shutdown. CPU death could do this, I suppose.
Can you give your mobo a good look-over for any swelling/blown capacitors?
Do you have any spare parts that can be swapped in for testing as needed?
-
I do have some parts that I can try. I'm planning on opening it up later today.
I looked up the last time I did a build and it was 2014, so six years old. It has an Fury R9 which also matches the time frame for 2014.
The screen glitched, in the corner of the screen I saw a blue screen and then it just shut down. Your point about a PSU just shutting off makes sense which seems to point to Motherboard or CPU. Neither of which is good.

Okay, I'm gonna vote for dead GPU. The screen glitchy thing suggests it, and when my kid's GPU died last year, it wouldn't do any more than spin the fans when we tried to start it, which sounds like what yours is doing. Not sure what about a dead GPU causes that, but in this case it did.
So, in order of likelihood, I say GPU -> CPU -> Mobo -> PSU.
-
I have an old nvidia card. Currently running Radeon (obviously I would guess given the Fury R9 comment above). I assume putting in the old GPU will at least allow me to boot if it works. Even if it starts in VGA, because of no drivers, that should be able prove it is or isn't the cause.
edit: Actually, if I take out the GPU it should switch to integrated. I think I will try that first.

Yeah, putting it the nvidia it'll boot into windows fine. At which point, windows will happily try to install drivers for it.
-
FUCK YEAH.
It is my video card that failed!
Still sucks. But I took it out and plugged my cable into the motherboard and it booted up like a champ.
So...what video card should I buy?
I have a EVGA 850 Power Supply. Five to six years old but maybe it will do?
edit: Getting the damn GPU out was a royal pain in the ass. I had to take out the CPU fan. Stupid latch on the PCI slot wouldn't release.
-
Damn. Maybe I spoke too soon. Computer shut off after five minutes.
I am going to let it chill and get the CPU fan back on. Five minutes of doing nothing shouldn't have over heated it.
-
Five minutes with no CPU fan? Yeah, that'll overheat it. Most CPUs won't even last 30 seconds before they hit thermal shutdown.
-
As for what GPU to get, well... sadly this is the worst possible time to be buying a GPU. The new ones are horrendously out of stock globally, with wait lists miles long when you can even get on a list. The previous gen is damn hard to find because no new ones are being made and the rest have been scooped up.
What kind of $budget are you looking at, would be the first thing to know I guess.
-
Not more than $500.
NVidia 2070 would be nice, I think. If you think it would work with the PSU I have. Ideally something that I can move to a new computer just in case something else is going wrong.
Right now it seems to be working with the MoBo graphics. No witcher for me.
When will the new ones come available?
edit: $530 for 2070 (https://www.amazon.com/ZOTAC-GeForce-Graphics-IceStorm-Zt-T20710E-10M/dp/B07XSPWMP9/ref=sr_1_14?dchild=1&keywords=rtx+2070&qid=1603154039&refinements=p_n_feature_four_browse-bin%3A6066318011&rnid=2057431011&s=pc&sr=1-14)
The GTX 2060 is around $380.

Your PSU is fine for any GPU short of a 3090.
3070s are releasing on the 29th, but if availability is anything like the 3080 (that I'm still trying to get a month later) then, well, it's basically a paper launch and you could be waiting a bit. That said, Nvidia did push back the release date a few weeks to build up stock, so maybe there will be some to be had?
It's really, really hard to recommend any 2xxx card when the 3xxx ones are just *so much better* at the same price points - like, quite literally double the performance. It's one of the (if not THE) biggest generational performance leaps ever. If you can wait, I'd really say wait. Next best thing, see if you can get an EVGA card and use their step-up program to slide into a 3xxx equivalent when they're available. I think you have 90 days from purchase to step-up. But only certain cards are eligible, so check their list. Like, I'm not sure a plain 2060 is, but a 2060 super might be.
AMD's new cards are coming in a couple weeks, too, but no idea if they'll be any more available than the Nvidia ones. Also, there's not really anything to suggest they're competing on the same playing field as Nvidia right now.
-
I will follow your sage advice and try for the 3070. Any advice on how to get lucky enough to order one?

I wish I did. I'm still batting 0.000 trying to nab a 3080.
Best chance is probably just watch for release times and have stores ready to go? Be signed in, payment info already registered, etc. (I've found that the easiest way to do this is to add an item to a cart, go 90% of the way through checkout so your payment info is in, then remove the item from the cart and back out).
Also, on EVGA's site, sign up for "Notify Me" on whatever card(s) you want (not sure if this option is up for 3070s yet) and they'll put you in a purchase queue in order of signing up. Once your slot comes up, they email you, and you have 8 hours to buy the card or it goes back into the queue.
-
Thanks.
I have the page queued up in Amazon, best buy. I have auto notify for four cards at New Egg. EVGA is not listing the 3070 yet. The step up program likewise does not list a 3070. I suspect my best option will be to buy from EVGA and use the step up program to get into a queue for the 3070.
Any clue what time I should start tracking the sites on the 29th? Is it mid night GMT? 7am EST? Or some random ass time that helps the bots get in first?
-
According to this site the time of the release is 6amPST. Or 1pm GMT. Or 9am EST. No clue if accurate but I have nothing else to go on. So I guess I will be up early on Thursday.
What a crappy time for my video card to have died.

Yep, truly shitty time to be needing a GPU. :(

So, AMD did their release hype presentation thing today.
If you don't care about raytracing and just want raw performance, you could look into a 6800 (competes with 3070) or 6800XT (competes with 3080) in November. No signs that availability will be any better, but more cards = more chances, amirite? The 6xxx cards look to be cheaper than the equivalent Nvidia cards, so that's something. You do give up DLSS and raytracing, though. I mean, technically the AMD cards can do raytracing, but they don't have dedicated hardware for it. They brute force it instead, so performance is... not good.
Just something to look into.
-
I have an order number from Best Buy.
I might have succeeded.
https://www.bestbuy.com/site/nvidia-geforce-rtx-3070-8gb-gddr6-pci-express-4-0-graphics-card-dark-platinum-and-black/6429442.p?skuId=6429442
That is the one I was able to add.
And I have confirmation email and estimated pick up of 11/4.
edit: Annndddd....sold out. The pages I had ready now all show that is not available. Part of me won't believe my luck until I have the thing in my hands.
-
Oh ffs.
I mean, yay happy for you.
But godfuckingdammit all to hell.
I've been pounding F5 on every store ever since the 3080 released, trying to nab a 3080 or 3070 with zero luck and you just effortlessly land one.
FML.
-
Maybe Sssith will sell you his (for a small profit, of course).

Sorry that you didn't get lucky. I do feel like I won an auction.
I had about 8 tabs open. Amazon let add but it kept not actually loading. Newegg and Evga went from available to sold out in a blink. Best buy kept trying to add and telling me to wait. I had three tabs with them. All of a sudden I just landed in the cart. After which I was frantically trying to check out.
-
Yeah. I've had a discord in-stock-alert bot open in a tab since mid-September, have every store page set with a chrome plugin that refreshes them every 15 seconds and alerts me if any change to "Add to cart"... and I never hit them. I might see them, but I can never complete the sale.
This morning I had one in my cart several times at Bestbuy just to lose it at the end. Last night, I had a 3080 in my cart at newegg and got past putting in payment and shipping info (which were already saved but it asked for again!) and after clicking the final "PAY NOW!" button, it went to "oops out of stock."
It's been an absolutely infuriating and frustrating experience. First time I've ever wanted a top end GPU at release *and* had the money to buy it, and no one will sell me one.
-
That is brutal.
I am looking forward to turning Ray Tracing on and DLSS. I have read some what old threads that Witcher 3 will support it with an update. I hope this has already happened as I am looking forward to getting back to the game.
I have to figure out what games currently support this stuff.
edit: Tomb Raider does. I might have to go back and checkout the game.
edit 2: Have yoiu tried in B & H? They also get stock.
-
Yep, B&H is on my watchlist.
I turned on raytracing in Tomb Raider for the lulz once. It brought my 1080 to a near standstill with everything else turned up, too. Like single-digit FPS iirc. ;D
Of course, Control is kind of "the" game for raytracing right now, so that one just sits in my library... I don't want to play it until I can do so with all the eyecandy. You should check it out if you haven't already.
Let's see, others off the top of my head... Metro Exodus, Wolfenstein: Youngblood, Bright Memory, Battlefield V, Remnant: From the Ashes, the new Serious Sam, Watch Dogs (and the new one, of course)... maybe Doom 2016 (can't remember for sure on that one)...
-
A lot of the cards seem to come with the new Watch Dog. I don't see a mention of it with my purchase but I have a slight hope that it will be included.
It will be nice to have my gaming computer back when the card arrives.
-
A friend of mine that got a 3070 from Bestbuy yesterday morning just got an email that it's backordered...
-
AFAIK only the 3080s come with Watch Dogs, and something like a year of Geforce Now.
-
The subscription thing is there, but I guess not Legion.
Sucks for your friend. I hope that it doesn't happen to me. Until I have it in my hands it's not a done deal.
-
And here ya go, Bright Memory has a free "ray tracing benchmark" version (https://store.steampowered.com/app/1409670/Bright_Memory_Infinite_Ray_Tracing_Benchmark/) to show off all the insane purties and test performance. :D
Ray tracing is just stupidly awesome. It's clearly the Next Big Thing that every PC needs to be built for.
-
That looks interesting. If I do indeed get my hands on the GPU I will try it out.
-
In theory, I was supposed to be able to pick up the GPU yesterday. Contacted Best Buy today and the chat person made it sound like the inventory has not come in from the manufacturer yet. I was told that I had actual inventory assigned to my order. Nerve-wracking but I still have hope.

Oof. Yeah, I know someone else who's also bought one from them, but no answer as to how far down the queue he is, or why Best Buy sold him one that they didn't actually have in stock.

Seeing this thread bit late to help, but I wanted to comment on this: the real revolution people seem not to notice enough is DLSS. This is pure magic, and an infinitely better solution to 4k support than raw power. DLSS frees enough power on your GPU to try tackling issues that seemed out of reach a few years ago.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_gQ202CFKzA is a fun illustration.
But basically, it means you can render at 720p or 1080p, and get just as good or even BETTER image quality than native 4k by upscaling it, for a fraction of power. ALl that power you save, well... the mind reels at possibilities.
-
Yeah DLSS is pretty cool too.
Still think raytracing is way cooler. ;)

Yay!
-
Just got it installed. I checked out the tool you mentioned. Very pretty. Looking forward to seeing all this work.
-
Hee hee, have fun!
-
Witcher 3 looks awesome. Runing it on Ultra settings.
I am going to have to jump back into TR3 to see the ray tracing.
-
Congrats Geoff on actually getting it.
-
I can't believe how lucky I got.
Witcher 3 is a beauty of a game with it.

WOO HOOOO!
Very sweet! Faster than mine. Swap?! :P

Tempting and all, but I think I'll pass! Maybe next time. ;D

Congratulations! Patience pays off. Very happy for you.

Amazon bumped up my shipping date. :D
-
Nice. I bet you are going to jump into Control right away. I have that queued up. Just a little bit into Witcher 3 right now.

Yeah, Control is high on the list! I tried running it on my 1080 and the 1080 was having none of it. lol
Of course, Assassin's Creed Viking Murderhobo is out now, too...
-
I played about half of the first AC, it was ok but boring. I have never played any of the others. I heard one is really good but there a like a zillion of them now.
Witcher 3 -> Control. After that I will probably want to play either Cyberpunk or Baldur's Gate.

AC Odyssey was awesome. I never cared for any of the ones I played before that.
Witcher 3 I had fun with for a while. I doubt I'll go back to it, though. I hate Geralt as a protagonist.
Cyberpunk woo! Assuming it doesn't get delayed AGAIN, I'll be on that next month.
Baldur's Gate, of course, I've already played to death... Now just to wait for the actual/finished game to release. I'm guessing a year or so. What they have is act 1, with a level cap of 4, takes about 20-25 hours to go through if you do everything.
-
Yeah, Geralt is a bit flat, but the game is still pretty great and is gorgeous, even without ray tracing.
I guess I will have to get AC Odyssey at some point. I think my main game is going to Cyberpunk. I will get it after Control and Witcher. I didn't realize that the full release of Baldur's Gate was that far off. Hell, at that pace D4 might be out.
-
It shipped! Wooo! It's real!
-
Ha...I had the same feeling. Until it was in my hands I wasn't sure.

SWEETNESS!
What game are you going to target first?
-
Control.
Then see how tomb raider looks with the ray tracing on.
And then I’ll probably just be back to playing AC Valhalla.
-
Download quake2 rtx for me please :)

I'll take it. Double the score from previous set up.
Control at max settings with max ray tracing, 1440p, 100+ fps.

Yep. You somehow stepped on a leprechaun basically. ;D
I have friends that are at the point where they will take 3060/3070/3080, doesn't matter which, and still can't land one despite all the stuff I mentioned a while back - multiple discords, store pages auto-refreshing/notifying, etc. It's just stupid.
And the AMD 6xxx cards are no better.
-
I got a promo email from Newegg for the 3060s yesterday I think. I went to the site to see how much they were and they were all sold out. They were also advertising a pre-order for a pre-built system by ABS with a 3060 RTX 8GB, i7, 16GB RAM, and 512GB SSD for $1300.
