Title: Coronavirus
Post by: Sssith on March 02, 2020, 11:21:41 AM
Interesting article about the outbreak in Iran.

https://www.newyorker.com/news/our-columnists/how-iran-became-a-new-epicenter-of-the-coronavirus-outbreak

It seems that the spread has been going on there for a little over three weeks.

Overall the whole situation seems pretty bad in that the virus as slipped the bonds of containment.  It seems to be highly contagious and that many seem to just become carriers of the virus.

The response here in the US has been poor.  A person one county away from where I live went to the hospital and was there for a while undiagnosed.   Mainly because this person had no ties to China.  Trump, early in his tenure, reduced the funding for the CDC.  Here in the US I believe it is going to get much worse, as this virus is probably widely loose in a variety of major areas, including my home of the Bay Area.  Putting Pence as the head of this task force seems like the most ironic of jokes, given his own disbelief of science and track record in the spread of HIV in his state.

I recently saw that even little ole Iceland has a case.  If any one here has played Plague Inc. you know what that means.

It's gonna get bad.

Wash your hands, people. Often. And stop touching your face. Yes, you.

Gonna hurt the economy, too. Stuff is gonna get scarce as supply chains go fucky. Stock up on toilet paper - it's reportedly already hard to find in areas with known cases.

We have our first case from someone who travelled from Iran, then Dubai, Bali, here.  They are in isolation, but I hear there are more people getting tested who have symptoms but not confirmed yet.  Might be getting forced to work from home and other stuff.

We have a better health system (more accessible) but winter is around the corner and regular flu etc makes it busy anyway, so its not going to be good.  Also I have very little faith in those currently in charge of my country and the health minister.

We have some homegrown nutbars:
https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/health/119861726/coronavirus-brian-tamaki-blames-satanic-airborne-demons-drinking-of-bats-blood

"Destiny Church leader Brian Tamaki has blamed airborne demons and human cruelty to animals for the coronavirus outbreak.
He also suggested some born-again Christians could have special protection from the deadly disease.
"Satan has control of atmospheres unless you're a born-again, Jesus-loving, bible-believing, Holy Ghost-filled, tithe-paying believer," Bishop Tamaki said on Sunday morning."

So just pay the church and you are immune. His church is him which helps his lifestyle, while is poor congregation suffer.

The reaction to Covid 19 here in the UK is both pathetic and hilarious.

What are people intending to do with all the hand sanitiser they are buying? Load it into a super soaker and fire it at other people to pre-clean them?

So i'm reading that the CDC made some shitty tests that didn't really work while the rest of the world followed WHO advice.  Sounding scary in Italy and mainly affected those in their later years.   We have a few people at work in their 60s and at least one 70s.  I have a cold and lucky I can work at home.
Title: Re: Coronavirus
Post by: Sssith on March 12, 2020, 10:12:41 AM
We have a friend, who my wife works with, who has a cough and fever and went into urgent care to get checked.  Except that she did not get tested.  She had the impression that they don't have kits with which to test her.  Now it is completely possible that they legitimately don't think she is infected and that she has a common cold.  But you would imagine that if the test kits were readily available she would have been tested regardless.  Combine that with the fact that she is a elementary school teacher, who are at higher risk, as they have to deal with little kids who leak all over the place, and it is concerning.
Title: Re: Coronavirus
Post by: mn4nu on March 12, 2020, 11:04:03 AM
It's all over the place.  The infected numbers are BS.  Everyone should plan on getting infected, or at least knowing someone who is infected.  Everything is getting shut down.  I would not be surprised to see the NCAA call off March Madness.  A bunch of conferences have already canceled conference tournaments.

It's all good.  Holy Cross did not make the tournament.

Meanwhile, in Maine, other than the U of Maine and a few other Universities going all online, there's a general "ignore the whole thing" going on. Schools are business as usual, no businesses are doing anything different, etc.

I asked my boss if our company was working on a plan to deal with issues of sick employees and stuff, especially since we're largely a public-facing business and got a flat "Nope."

Lovely.

My son is coming home today for Spring Break.  After the week it will be staying home for a month doing online classes.

Satellite photos show Iran is digging mass graves.

This is just not good.  The US response has been awful.  The extent of our inability to administer tests is surprising.  We need to get our shit together and our leadership is badly failing.

Schools are business as usual,

Not even instituting more handwashing routines for the children?
I mean closing schools would be a crazy thing to do, given how little good it would do and how much harm it would do but, at least try to make them more sanitised places and instill the students the importance of cleanliness at this time.

All public schools in Omaha are closed today.  My 2 kids in middle and high school have spring break next week.  After that, I think they will go to online learning for a week or two at least.  My wife is a teacher in the same district they attend, and she said that's what administration was telling teachers to prepare for yesterday.  My oldest daughter comes home from college today for spring break.  Her school (in western Colorado) sent out an email saying that through 3 April all classes will be online and they will decide what to do past that over the next couple of weeks.  It wouldn't surprise me if they decide to go online for the rest of the semester.

I can't believe most of Maine isn't doing anything to prepare/mitigate yet.  Crazy.

Our state epidemiologists are doing their best to convince people to keep the schools open at this point but there’s intense pressure to close them. My wife works for the state health department and they’re getting screamed at to order the schools closed. Explaining why (we should keep them open) is not well received, but they have the governors support at the moment.

I just listened to a pod cast with an expert and he was questioning the idea of closing schools (elementary through high school).  The idea being that younger kids are not as affected and that a large percentage of nurses, who will be needed at work, don't have alternatives for child care other than staying home.  At the very least it was an interesting take.  I will see if I can dig up the pod cast.

Geez, so the UK has said, right, lets lock up the elderdy and those who need protection, but just let the virus run its course and get 10s of millions sick and hope it doesn't overflow the healthcare sector while happening as those people aren't too old or compromised ..

end result might be herd immunity, but rest of the world isnt' doing that, so those old and compromised need to stay isolated, as harder to get virus but still possible.

Who knows how many waves, or if Trump will just say "ok the US has developed a vaccine, its only for the USA" .. a virus doesn't care about borders.  The rest of the world can't vote you out but FFS

Herd immunity? There's no indication that there will even ever be a herd immunity. So far, there's no evidence that I'm aware of that this is a "get it once and you're immune" kind of virus. There's some cases of people recovering and then getting sick with it again - though it's not clear if they recovered 100% and were reinfected, or just never fully recovered.

The Netherlands have closed the physical schools except to children of "vital" workers in medicine, transport, logistics and the likes. Working from home is highly encouraged. There is a "code orange" travel recommendation: Don't, unless absolutely necessary. Theaters, restaurants, fitness centers, etc. are shut down, the latter meaning my oldest son has no income atm.

But supermarkets and other shops remain open. Those with risks (recent travel to high-risk countries) are supposed to self-isolate for 2 weeks. There are a couple is my direct neighborhood, we help with groceries and the likes as on-line shops are extremely busy. I hope we can avoid a total lockdown. The tally here is 43 deaths 1700+ infected on a 17 million population. My wife and I work from home.

Several other European countries are in lockdown though. We've set up skype for my father in law, but my wife still visits him as well. My sons were supposed to travel to South Africa next week, but I highly doubt that will happen now. My company (A cable company) has opened up the movie channels to all for free, to help keep people home and amused.

@syn.  Also BS.  I take it you are still going into work.

we've engaged distancing and extra cleaning protocols but are maintaining appointment schedules. there are other clinics that aren't letting clients in the building--- techs go out to the car to collect pets, all comms by phone. this would not work well at our clinic, for better or worse. we closed early today to do a deep clean (or so i've been told, the exposure was identified after i'd left for the day) but will be open again as usual tomorrow. governor walz issued an executive order this afternoon postponing elective procedures until further notice, the point being to conserve PPE. i forwarded the order to my boss; interpretation i got back is that it does not include veterinary practice, so no changes to us as of yet. in contrast, governor of OH included veterinary practices in a similar order. guessing it's a matter of time for us, but ownership at my practice won't cancel procedures until forced to. otoh, they did give all full timers an extra 80 hours of PTO to be used in case of COVID contact. i'm guessing at least one employee at my location will be confirmed positive in the next week and then we'll be closed for the next couple weeks.

edited to fix a sentence.

and MN has changed unemployment benefits to kick in much faster and to last longer for COVID related layoffs/sickouts, tho i'm not up on the specifics. I would guess/hope that ME has something similar in the works.

New York has basically said to stay home unless you work in an essential business. Car sales isn't essential, so I'm officially not working until further notice. They didn't tell us if we're still getting paid, but did make it sound like they didn't plan on laying anyone off. We'll see what happens, and how long this lasts.

I'm in a software job where I've worked from home a lot anyway, so things haven't changed a ton for me.  In fact, because we do mostly Salesforce implementation for schools and nonprofits, lots more business is coming in because they need a good database and framework to handle everything remotely.  If this had happened last year though I probably would've been screwed, since everyone has stopped hiring.  I can't go to our office, because someone else in the building had a confirmed case (several days after we started "semi-permanently" working from home), and I'm definitely worried about a lot of my friends, many who were working in retail and aren't getting paid anything to not work.

I know quite a few people in service industry that are really struggling. Most didn't get laid off they just got a big reduction of hours to cover carryout orders. I told them I would probably leave and take the unemployment our state is offering with no wait time right now.

I am in IT as a programmer so working from home is not new to me. Luckily I can but I am tired of being home after 1 week already. Supporting users who struggle with technology has made the past week more difficult than usual.

Ohio will have to wait and see if it really does make a difference. Probably will not know for at least a few weeks.

If they really intend to do something nationally they already are taking too long. Just give everyone $x dollars and be done with it. No provisions or anything. I would say anything less than $2000 is a waste of time really.

Yep, so officially in lockdown now for 4+ weeks.   allowed to leave the house for exercise once a day, go to to the supermarket (one person) to go to pharmacy and almost nothing else.  At least where I live people aren't jammed on top of each other, and there is a small park 2 days down that isn't used much.  Will be a few walks/biking around that to use some physical energy

Thats the city that had a recent rebuild after earthquakes roughly 9-10 years ago, the tram track on the ground there too.

Also the right side of the road is not the "right" side to drive.  I'm sure if Bernie gets in , he'd switch everyone to driving on the left to annoy Trumpers.

Over here all restaurants, cafes, bars. Takeaway and delivery places are shut except a select few. Everyone has to cook at home or heat up stuff at home. Things like flour sales are through the roof. There is a lot of flour available but takes weeks to get more packaging to the manufacturers. So seeing some 20kg bags for sale instead of 1kg as that’s what is around

I really, really don't envy people in the states right now.

Due to pressure from the state governments, Australia did okay in terms of their first response, and we are going to have to be very careful managing what comes next, and probably the next 12 months.

The US still doubling its cases every 2-3 days would be a terrifying prospect if i lived there, particularly with your healthcare setup.

It is interesting you have problems finding some of those things. In central Ohio Milk, butter and eggs are still plentiful here. Canned soups, bacon, any paper product, soap and hand sanitizer are the main things that are hard to impossible to find here. Pasta, cheese and frozen meals still is not too hard to find but rice is fairly scarce.

I really, really don't envy people in the states right now.
The thing that I am most surprised with is how unprepared local hospitals  are for any sort of major health issue. They should be required to have 6 months or a year of basic supplies for an emergency in addition to their normal usage. Most claimed they lived by just in time ordering. These are corporations that have millions of dollars and are always building new facilities here.

I'm hearing a few things, not trying to lay blame but while things were blowing up in China, some were saying, "shit, now is the time to stock up and prepare" but they didn't.  There was a federal stockpile which is mostly used up now.  Many had broken/rotten stock that can't be used.  Then the "whose job is it to get stuff and distribute"?

Keep in mind this is a similar problem all over the world, there are close to 200 infected countries, all needing equipment, then all the sub areas, in your cases states, in my situation different health authorities.  Who is talking, asking questions, doing the planning and ordering?

Also D2A, millions in revenue, but where does it all go? Does it go to the bank account, ready to buy stuff, or does it go to shareholders who are after their next quarterly return.

We have just passed 1000 cases yesterday, they are saying there are i think 13 clusters of 10+ infected people so far.

That is good to hear.

You can tell which governments took it more seriously than others.  In the US you can look state by state (federal level was a clusterfuck).  That is not to fault Italy or New York which got hit hard before they knew what was really happening.  Washington state was one of the first to get hit hard but as a whole took it seriously and they were able to slow it.

To a watching world, the absence of a fair, affordable US healthcare system, the cut-throat contest between American states for scarce medical supplies, the disproportionate death toll among ethnic minorities, chaotic social distancing rules, and a lack of centralised coordination are reminiscent of a poor, developing country, not the most powerful, influential nation on earth.

That’s a title the US appears on course to lose – a fall from grace that may prove irreversible. The domestic debacle unleashed by the pandemic, and global perceptions of American selfishness and incompetence, could change everything. According to Walt, Trump has presided over “a failure of character unparalleled in US history”.

Do Americans realise how far their country’s moral as well as financial stock has fallen? Perhaps at this time of extreme stress, it seems not to matter. But it will matter later on – for them and for the future international balance of power.

It's not. He had a brief spike soon after Coronavirus started in the US, the result of the usual "rally around the leader" effect, but it has since steadily dropped toward his normal 40% or so that's his "could shoot someone on Fifth Avenue" base. He's at ~43% right now and dropping (depending on which poll you like).

MN is still trending towards peak in July. they officially canceled the state fair last week. passed 20k confirmed cases and had the largest one day spike in ICU cases yet over the weekend. coincides with businesses beginning to open back up, go figure. several churches threatened to outright defy the governor's closure orders last week so he issued a compromise order over the weekend, loosening but trying to maintain some level of control. regrettable but maybe the best that can be done at this point. what a clusterfuck.

Today overall went quite well, tried to generally keep some distance from colleagues, however if one of us gets sick we can easily communicate to all the others to quarantine and test.  Hardly anyone on the streets or train home so could easily avoid strangers.

Sucked walking up the hill in the dark.  In March when I came home daylight savings hadn't gone.  We are now under 1 month till the shortest day here.

I think we have had 4 days in a row of 0 confirmed cases.  Last week only 1 for the week.  By Friday mass gatherings of 100 allowed anywhere, but might be a few weeks before we officially drop down to the next lockdown level.

Attention is shifting to the economy here.  As the days and weeks go on, there is a stream of redundancies, business closures. We have an election scheduled for mid September.

Also lots of talk with basically no international tourists asking locals to go see more of our own country

FYI after about 3 weeks of no new cases, then the last case closed everyone was happy. However people who were overseas can still come home.  In the last week or so  we are getting a steady increase in cases.  They are mostly in quarantine in hotels, but we are hearing some shitty stories of at least 1000 people who left without getting tested.  No idea if/when we will get more cases outside quarantine again. The mood has swung around a bit here.

over 15 thousand new cases reported in Florida today. single day record for any state since this began.

yeehaw.

edit: Devos was on the sunday morning shows talking about how important it is that schools open this fall, and how trump may withhold funding for any school that doesn't have in-school classes (which would be illegal, but who cares about that). she compared the US to other countries that have had some success opening schools, and completely ignored the point that the US is having between 3 and 4 ORDERS OF MAGNITUDE more new cases than any of the countries she used as a metric.

102 glorious days without community transmission. Some active cases of people returning to the country in isolation. Then a family is sick here now. Positive and they have no idea where they caught it. So many people have been so lax and hadn’t bothered with contact tracing. Our biggest city is getting into a lockdown. More restrictions for rest of the country.

On the plus side we have for past most of winter so far without overloading the health system.

There is a bunch of talk about those who aren’t sick but haven’t properly recovered months later. It can bring on things like M.E. / Chronic Fatigue which sadly a mixture of the medical community and people in general don’t think is real or appreciate how debilatating it is.

Hopefully one silver lining out of covid might be more understanding and research into M.E. Your body has a virus or something infectious and after your body is hightemed in its immune response. Any exercise leaves people just drained.

I hope future reporting focuses more on just diagnosed/recovered and deaths.  We need more info on those who are alive but not what they were before. Those with strokes and other things.

A very close friend of mine's father and his wife (her step mother I guess, although it's a recent embellishment so she doesn't think of her that way) were just diagnosed with Covid.  They live in Bulgaria -- she lives here in PA.  Today she told me that he feels pretty good, so he went grovery shopping and was "out and about"  There's a quarantine there if you're positive too, but he doesn't feel like it applies to him.  After all, he's already sick so what does he have to worry about?  No, they don't wear masks.   I can't even with that kind of self-centeredness.  She has stopped fighting with him because it doesn't make any difference.

A month ago he flew back to the states to fill a prescription for Oxycodone and get an absentee ballot to vote for trump.  :(

Record covid deaths in MN again today. We’re around 20% test positivity at the moment. meanwhile, South Dakota hit over 60% test positivity this past week. They (and Iowa) have started shipping patients here. Meanwhile their governors continue to act like assholes. Walz (MN guv) called Noem (SD guv) out yesterday, but it won’t matter. Noem’s running for president in 2024 and is completely useless.

jealous.

MN set more covid records on friday. on track to break 10K new cases a day next week, and likely more than 100 deaths a day in ~2-3 weeks.

Walz ordered some new rules that took effect Friday, which are likely inadequate but still pissed off the state republicans. meanwhile, the republican senate majority leader just tested positive the week after a special legislative session where Minnesota GOP senators had COVID, but the GOP caucus didn’t tell DFLers (https://www.mprnews.org/story/2020/11/14/minnesota-gop-senators-had-covid-but-gop-caucus-didnt-tell-dflers).

edit: previously mentioned senate majority leader is quarantining in Florida, after flying there this past Monday. his spokesman said "he hasn't traveled while under quarantine". oddly precise language; he'd gone to a post-election party in the twin cities burbs that so far has resulted in multiple other infected republicans. just makes you want to get on a plane, doesn't it.

Taken from an Australian researcher and activist I know, talking about US covid info:
Quote
As of today, over 1,000 hospitals have reached capacity. This includes the total break down of medical care for many other urgent procedures. These particular hospitals have run out of ventilators, beds and more critically, health professionals.

In many states their ability to cater for the dead is also being overwhelmed.

The U.S is now about to experience the biggest mass casualty event on home soil in their history. Everyday they are recording well over 1,000 deaths. In a few weeks, that will climb to 2,000.
Infectious disease experts like Anthony Fauci are predicting that by the end of their winter, over 500,000 Americans would have lost their lives.
Within a few weeks, COVID will become the leading daily cause of death in that country.

Right now, COVID has spread so far and wide, it has become so systemically ingrained in their entire society that no health measures or technological solution will slow it down.
It has become so bad in some states, that medical staff are resigning. They are the lucky ones as thousands are being infected and forced off the job.

22 percent of U.S hospitals are now reporting that they no longer have enough health staff to cope with the massive influx of sick people. As of yesterday, over 77,000 Americans are in hospital because of COVID.

I'm so horrified, I really don't know what to say. I really hope you guys are staying safe, and you can afford to keep your families away from this, because that is.... just so bloody sad.

Netherlands is still not doing that good. Better then 2 weeks ago, but lock-down will be eased again starting tomorrow, with still too many people ill IMO.
Mind you, I am having an easy time: I am still allowed to go fishing and cycling, I have little need of restaurants, discos, etc. My wife and my two sons live with me, and I can visit my father-in-law. And I'm a loner by nature. Working in IT from home suits me remarkably well. *shrugs*
