Title: Diablo 4
Post by: Ray Patean on November 01, 2019, 02:14:03 PM
I don't know who else watched the opening ceremony of BlizzCon, but  Diablo 4 was announced with a cinematic trailer and a gameplay trailer! There's even a playable demo at BlizzCon!

They announced "the first 3" playable characters - Barbarian, Sorceress and Druid! The game looks more like D2, but with the fluid combat of D3. It's much darker and Gothic looking.

I'm wicked hyped for this!!

I watched the trailer and it looks good.  It's Diablo...I will definitely buy it.

The first non shit Diablo news in years. Shame it will take at least 3 years to release and not be as fun as it should be for the first 6 months based on past form

Title: Re: Diablo 4
Post by: Pixie on November 02, 2019, 01:03:41 PM
He liked it a lot. Says it leans way harder into Diablo 2 than Diablo 3.

Specific notes:
- Classes are not gender locked
- There is some character customization (choose a face & color)
- Dodging mechanic feels solid and fun
- They only had barbarian, sorceress, and druid so far
- He played druid, said it's like a barbarian with spells and pets and you dynamically shapeshift during attacks - like start off with a wolf melee attack and shift into a bear move in the middle
- He joined in killing some world event boss and said it was an awesome fight. The boss was destroying entire groups of players. (aside: yes, it's more MMO-y than previous Diablos, but you can play solo)

Now just have to wait another... 3... or 4... years.

Yeah, I guess those count.  Upon closer examination, there's some implied curvature there that's not really apparent when you watch the video.

Does anyone else find themselves thinking back to the initial details of D3 at announcement?    They had the barb/WD (the only character who won't be in immortal? wtf .. anyway) and killing a bunch of normal things and later had the siegebreaker with something only as a teaser but not in the final game.

The horses were probably the coolest thing I think after thinking about it for a few days.  Hopefully they dont have limitations on them.  Hopefully the levels aren't so big that it feels like a Borderlands map where you dont have a car and its just a bloody chore to get from one side to the other.  Hopefully like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zvEe3Y3B2cg

no one really talking about the PVP which D3 never got around too.  At least they were talking about if it got there, it would be opt-in, not the toxic mess that was D2 and caused many of us to avoid risking playing with others (among many other reasons).

We have seen, partly in D3 where people mostly work together as everyone benefits, but other games and genres, where people can work as a community and get rewards they couldnt' get solo.  Hopefully some of the best of that is there.

Hopefully "regions" are not a thing anymore.  Sure I can understand in some respects why they have it.  But my friendships are not based solely where someone happens to be.  Not being able to play with them, or with everyone at once sucks.  Other games can do it!

I remember a conversation back on the SPF about mounts being a cool thing to have in D2. Nice to see they've finally made it into the game. I imagine this is another cosmetic area Blizz can do rewards/monetise on.

Obviously this game is going to have Diablo in it at some point and that, for me, is the most interesting part as to how the story will play out.

Video is cool.  Very dark.  I hope this leads to a less cartoony world.  Lilith...interesting, I need to refresh my lore on her.  Where is her angel partner?  Still really early so wait and see.

Barb & Sorc?  Yawn.  How about some new classes?

I just got back from a trip so I am catching up on the news.  Is four years everyone's guess or is that the announced timeline?  Are we sure this is SP?  At this point I hate to assume anything.

They were talking about BL3 Raid style events which need a crowd to do.  Probably my least favorite part about Borderlands.

Watched some game play and it seemed very D3 stylistically.  I imagine this will morph over time but not blown away by it so far.  It does reinforce how early they are in this process, which just boggles the mind.  They should have been working on this for a couple of years already.  This is coming off as them scurrying to recover from last year's debacle.  Reacting vs leading.  With d3 as old as it is they should have had something in the works (other than Immortal).

Did they even mention Diablo Immortal at any of the events?
Title: Re: Diablo 4
Post by: Timinator on November 06, 2019, 04:05:02 PM
Immortal was talked about, but basically a side blog to not hog D4 attention and not to confuse people.  There is also no clue when a release date for that is.  Probably at least 2 years before D4.

If you'd heard any of the news/rumours from Blizzard over the years, you'd know about the 2nd D3 expansion that got cancelled due to higher ups thinking the game sucked  (not as well financially as they wanted etc), so what would have been came out as the necro pack/free stuff/deleted.

They were working on a version of D4 that was similar to Dark Souls but that got killed.  We heard about the starcraft game that got killed this year, they say there are a whole lot that get cancelled that no one ever hears about too.

I've got no idea about BL3 raids, what do you need there? do you need a mix of classes?  Or just is it more about having enough people who are geared well and can damage things etc?  Diablo has never had things such as a "healing class" or tank etc.  Also the fact D3 was so over the top they limited to 4 in a game at one time kinda sucked.  It would have been better at least at the peak if it was scaled back some, but have parties of 8.  Of course when the game is dead and you dont get 4 in a game it doesnt matter any more ..

I still remember in early 2004, having 8 druids running around in D2 all having fun.  We never found a time for all 8 of us to play again

D4 is multiplayer but instanced. You can set up the dungeons and whatnot to be solo, but you're always going to see other players in the overworld, is what I understand.

There are definitely raid type bosses. My friend did one. Said it was one-shotting players and took a ton of work to bring down.

Barb/Sorc/Druid because they're going back to D2 and trying to wipe away the D3 stain a bit. Thus also the darker feel and stuff. Less cartoony.

4 years because that was the time between D3 appearing at Blizzcon (2008) and its release (2012).

Pretty awesome cinematic and the gameplay looks pretty fun. I'll be honest though. I probably won't be buying this on release day. I really want to scout out what the itemization is going to be like before sinking a bunch of time into it like I did with D3. I really don't like the set thing in D3. I know...rose tinted glasses etc, but there still hasn't been a game like D2 for me as far as items drops and stats and general excitement goes. I'm cautiously optimistic.

Sigilstun: Great to see you again, what have you been doing in the mean time?  Can we find you on steam or something when you aren't around here?

In late D2 LoD, Uniques were the best thing, some sets later could be good, but most guides said, get these uniques or runewords.  D3 was all about "start with this 6 piece set" then you need certain things, and not too many builds.  Also you could just push a button to change over ..

D2 could have used some Quality of life stuff .. i'm sure a lot will happen between now and then.

It's got to have the loot hunt.  If it doesn't have that, it won't much interest from me.  I will still buy it, but I won't invest thousands of hours into it like I did with 2 and 3.  Hell, I still play D2 today for the loot hunt.  It never really gets old.

If they take the best parts of D2 and D3 and combine them, we will have a winner!

Fingers crossed, will wait and see I guess :)

I hope they do something to improve HC play. I would like to see some form of D2 like action, you lose the character
but not the gear. It takes forever to upgrade your Leg gems and they can be gone in an instant.

DITTO! I only gemmed one HC char and lost her to a disconnect. It took a long, long time to level a dozen gems to even 80-90 area. I never had the patience to try that again.

I remember initially loving D3 as it referenced a lot of Diablo1 which I hadnt heard of in ages.  But the campaign mode for all its fun, wasn't fun the latter times going through it, and wasn't there in end game which was just random stuff.  Diablo2 didn't really have end game, we just kinda made it up and redid stuff we wanted.

The vacuum of new info will get people's imaginations going.  In the mean time, play things that are out, or are coming out.  I'm looking forward to Halo Reach coming to PC after 10 years next month!  and maybe Red Dead Redemption 2 after the early people finish their alpha testing.

Read the Itemisation post.  Looks really encouraging that it's going to be less like d3 and more like d2.

At least you're not going to be forced into the same gear.

That's different.  The skill tree is an actual tree!

I follow the development of D4 with a bit of detachment.  Yes, it's cool that they're working on the next Diablo game.  I'm sure I'll get it, play it, and love it, when it eventually comes out.  But following the details closely and getting excited about each tidbit of information that comes out is exhausting.  I'm not slamming you, by the way, and I'm not saying that that's what you're doing here.  But we know that lots of guys actually do that.  I check in once in a while and see what they're working on.  But knowing that it will still be anywhere from a year to 10 years before we see Diablo 4 makes it tough.  I have to keep it at arm's length.

It seems like a cool design.  Hopefully works well.  I need a new ARPG.  None of the ones that are out are that exciting.  The closest thing I have going in that regard is still Borderlands, which is more of a fpsRPG.
