Title: PS4 Games
Post by: Sssith on November 19, 2018, 08:51:20 AM
Hey all...I know.  Wrong crowd here for the most part.

Probably going to finally get the PS4 I think.  The price has dipped to 199 and it has a bunch of games that I would like to play.  Just looking for more ideas.

Diablo <-- local coop.  Are there any other games like this?
Uncharted 4 <-- series rocks.
Horizon Zero Dawn <-- seems awesome, is there a reason to get the enhanced edition?
Detroit Become Human <-- Any good?  Seems interesting
Borderlands 2 <-- I have a friend who is interested in MP play.

Any other ideas?

Haven't played Detroit Become Human, but there are many outlets that got really into and are considering it for GOTY this year.  Haven't played anything with couch co-op besides Divinity: Original Sin 1, which was garbage (2 is supposedly much better), though I've heard a lot about Overcooked and Don't Starve Together being good.

HZD: Complete Edition includes The Frozen Wilds DLC, which I would say was definitely worth it, plus that edition is pretty cheap now anyways.  Was my GOTY in 2017.
Bloodborne is still the best exclusive according to many, many people.  It won't hold your hand though.  Online Co-op/PvP.
Persona 5 needs to be experienced just for the art style, although it is very long even for a JRPG (I finished my 1st playthrough at ~110 hours).  Single Player. (Also on PS3)
Nier: Automata is a very weird combo of Bayonetta/Devil May Cry combat combined with a bullet hell shooter with top-tier music and unique ideas. Single Player. (Also on PC)
Yakuza 0 has a lot of everything, great brawling combat, great music, great story, a ton of side content, and a lot of weirdness too.  Probably the best in the series, and is a great tryout for getting into the other games in the series.  Single Player.  (Also on PC, Yakuza Kiwami which is a remake of Yakuza 1 is currently free on Playstation Plus this month)
Monster Hunter: World is Capcom's best selling game ever, and they've continued to update it with free stuff all year.  Online Co-op. (Also on Xbox One and PC)
Valkyria Chronicles: Remastered has a unique art style for a strategy/fps wartime game and a surprisingly good story.  Single Player.  (Also on PC and Switch)

I haven't played these but the reviews suggest they're universally loved:
God of War
Marvel's Spider-Man
The Last of Us: Remastered

You can also look at my trophy list for other stuff I've played.  https://psnprofiles.com/maxbeedo

For Horizon, the "enhanced" edition includes the DLC which adds a high-level zone, with a pretty interestng story. If you're confident you'll enjoy the game, go for it, you could also get the normal game and buy the DLC later if you want, might end up a tlittle bit more expensive.

Detroit is a difficult game to recommend, it's very hit or miss. Have you played any other Quantic Dream game ? If you liked Heavy Rain, go for it.

Otherwise, some console exclusive which come to mind are God of War (the new iteration has become some kind of hybrid between the former God of War and the Tomb Raider reboots IMO, it's some kind of Tomb Raider with extra focus on combat, using an axe instead), Spiderman, Red Dead Redemption 2.

I'm a huge fan of Bloodborne personally but I don't think that this is a genre you appreciate (Dark Souls-like game).

I loved Heavy Rain.  One of my all time favorite games.

It sounds like a yes for enhanced edition

I played the the first two God of Wars, and I liked them, but didn't love them.  Might have to check it out, given that I like Tomb Raider.

As for Last of Us I played it when it was out on PS3 and loved it.  I never did play the DLC which I heard was fantastic.  I might have to give it a try again.

Spiderman is included with the 199 version that I am thinking of getting.

I have never heard of Valkyria...I will have to look into it.

Valkyria Chronicles is awful. Recommend a hard miss.

I haven't played Detroit yet but it's high on my list. I, too, loved Heavy Rain.

Red Dead Redemption 2 seems like a must-play. If you're gonna console, you might as well get what is shaping up to be one of the best console games made.

Horizon, of course, is also a must play.

I have The Last of Us for PS3 and PS4. I dunno if it's worth replaying, but if you do (for the dlc?), it does looks worlds better on PS4.

Nier: Automata is really good, but it's on Steam, and games are always better on PC if you have the option. :P

Oh, and Spyro! Be an adorable dragon! So much cute and fun!

Diablo local coop seems well done.  Are there others specifically that do the same without a split screen?

I've never played any PS4 games using local co-op, so I can't help a lot there.  Tales of Berseria was decent and every Tales game can be 4-player co-op in the combat (everyone is on the same screen doing real-time combat), but it's single-player in the exploration and story.

Co-op, you're going to want to start digging in the indie games from the PSN store. Many actually exist on PC, but couch coop can indeed be more pleasant on console.
Things like Towerfall Ascension, Overcooked... Rayman Legens if me recommending Ubisoft products isn't suspect yet :p

A quick google search later, I saw a few decent recommendations : Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris, the Lego games in your favorite flavor (Marvel, DC, Star Wars, Harry Potter...) The Trine trilogy is worth checking too, as well as some of the more recent Resident Evil games if that's your thing.

Nice.  I appreciate the recs.

I might also get The Division for online coop.  Looking forward to a new set of games to play.

99% of the time I agree with you.  But in cases like this and Assassin's Creed Origins they seem to have botched the port, so the PS4 version may be better.  In the case of Nier I opted for the PS4 version.

What was botched? The port seemed fine to me? Genuinely curious...

Also, The Division: it's not good. It could be good. It had so much promise. But the ridiculous bullet spongeyness of the enemies just gets downright exhausting. If you want a good "Tom Clancy"-named game, go for Ghost Recon: Wildlands. All the same co-op fun, but can be played solo, and the enemies die when you shoot them.

Personally if I got a console, I'd only do it for stuff that isn't out on PC and won't be.  Sure sometimes an awful PC port comes out, but one of the only things I'd be tempted to get is Red Dead Redemption 1 and 2.

I'm very grumpy thats the only way we can see it, and also that they aren't doing a GTA 6 (yet).

Apparently a lot of people suffered framerate problems.  Probably not an issue on your 1080 ;)  Looks like a community patch has fixed it since though so my previous advice here can be disregarded.

Well I have the PS4.  Early xMass present.  Price was good this week.

Starting up the Spiderman game.  Need to get gud at the button mashing again.

Does Ps1 plus give me access to the games that they put up previously?  Or just from here out?  I assume the second but never hurts to check.

With PS+ you have to claim it during the month that it's offered free, but then you have it as long as you are a subscriber.  They change them on the first Tuesday of every month, so make sure you go to the Store and "purchase" them (it won't download them unless you tell it to).  Same goes for the PS3 and Vita, although the PS3 will try to download the games immediately so you have to stop it if you don't want them right away.

I should go take a look at what is available on the PS3.  I didn't even think of that.

Is it possible to get rid of stuff from the 'desktop' that you don't use?  Like Vue?  I would like to get rid of the clutter if I can.  I doubt it is possible.

Well I have been playing Soma.  A lot to love about the game and a lot to hate.  I am stuck on a hate moment right now.  So stupid that they make you race a monster you can't kill in an environment where you get stuck on corners.

I picked up Horizon Zero Dawn and it is pretty awesome so far.  Just finished the proving and I have hit level 16 or so.  Very pretty game.

Got Gundam Breaker 3 - Break Edition for my PS4. Hopefully get to play it tonight and see how it compared to Dynasty Warriors Gundam 3, which was one of my PS3 favs and still is, as I'm still playing it.

Never heard of the game.  Mech warrior battles it seems.  In Japanese with English Subtitles?  I think that would drive me nuts.

Gundam Breaker 3 is really good that it was suddenly 1am and I realised I needed to go to bed. Great combat system, fast and yet very involved. Sooooo many customisation options and things to unlock. This is going to have me absorbed for a while.

It is indeed Japanese with English subtitles. So best avoided if that sort of thing bothers you.

So progressing nicely in H:ZD (Horizon Zero Dawn).

Game is pretty epic.  At times I miss my mouse but overall I am holding my own.  I have already put 20 to 30 hours in and I feel like I have just scratched the surface of the game.

All that said it does have flaws.  Economy doesn't really make sense and I have no idea what I should hold onto.  Right now I am holding onto everything that might have use beyond selling for coin.  But the problem is that probably is not the right long term strategy.  Also some quests say level 8 but the end boss of the area is so much tougher than just that.

Aside from that, and not know which skills I want, the game is rock solid.

Also playing a bit of D3 from time to time.

HZD has one of the coolest stories, and I thoroughly enjoyed the slow drip of info as I went along.

As far as what to keep, the items have their uses listed on them, so many of them will only have "sell for shards" or whatever.  Most of the lenses, hearts and skins are for upgrading your inventory capacity, with only a few having any quest uses, but if you upgrade your inventory you should have enough space to hold 1 of almost everything (although you may need to sell down to only 2-3 slots each for the consumables or ammo crafting stuff).  Take some time to hunt animals for their bones and skins too, since many of those are needed too for upgrading and not every animal is in every area.  By the mid/end-game I was completely out of modification slots though and constantly had to sort through them to discard useless ones.

Post by: Sssith on January 14, 2019, 11:59:59 AM
That is what I figured.  I have fully upgraded some of my inventory items.  I imagine that once I get them all upgrade I no longer need to hunt for animals.  I am hanging onto all the lens as an example because you need them to buy some items.  I think that at some point they will become useless to hang onto as they will not be needed to items any longer.

I think I am about 80 hours into Horizon: Zero Dawn.

Overall the game is awesome and challenging.  Every once and a while though you run into a situation that is beyond tough.  I find that a bit annoying that these spikes happen.  Right now I am in one of them.  It is a set piece where you basically have to fight this insane machine with no cover.  Frustrating.  That said the good does out weigh the bad.

Still not a fan of the inventory system.

That's what turned me off of Dragon Age Inquisition. Play is balanced and fun, and then you finish Val Rouyeax, and there's a pretty much unwinnable fight against a Demon who immediately wipes your entire party. Tried it 20ish times, ragequit, and have never been back.

Some of the late-game fights in HZD do get a lot less like skirmishes and more like straight-up brawls.  You basically don't get a chance to set up any traps or hide from the enemies (you do get to prepare at least in the Cauldron fights), although in most cases in makes sense given the situation.  I didn't particularly enjoy those fights all that much, but they didn't hurt the game overall IMO.

DA:I is an interesting one.  I don't think I game-overed once in 6 playthroughs, 2 of them on Nightmare difficulty (though there were some tense moments for sure).  Are you referring to the Envy Demon in the Templar quest-line?  I don't remember it being very hard in the main game, although early on in the multiplayer that thing was almost impossible to beat.  They eventually nerfed it somewhat, so they might've done the same for the main game if you ever try it again, either that or you can do the Mage quest line instead (which I found to be far more interesting anyway).
Title: Re: PS4 Games

DA: I the first Pride demon was stupid tough.  There were some battle with monsters/dragons that were unwinnable until you got better gear or higher level.  I think there was also a certain area progression that you should follow to stay on level.  Certain areas would just pwn you if you went there too soon.

I also think that because I am really high level for this fight in H:ZD the monster was beef up also.  Meaning that I might have been better off tackling the area sooner.

Finished the main game in Horizon: Zero Dawn.  Now that is how you do an epic story.  Holy crap that was great.  Interesting story and they way they built it up was fantastic.  The game as a whole is also awesome, but not flawless.  I was not a huge fan of the economy and toward the end that fighter went from stealth to all out brawling.  Thank god I took the time to find a special armor.  The might have been tedious without it.  As a whole the game is one of the best games I have ever played.  If you enjoy a game with a great story and great action I would highly recommend this one.  It is a pity it is not available outside of the PS4.

I am now working on the DLC for the game and it seems to really adding to the world so far.

Glad you enjoyed it.  I was pleasantly surprised how good the story was, both emotionally as well as being a relatively unique sci-fi setting (was my 2017 GOTY).  The DLC is pretty solid too.  NoClip did a bunch of great documentaries about the making of HZD, and a lot of things make sense with how the game turned out.  Guerrilla Games allowed anyone in the company to pitch new ideas for their next game, and having picked a sci-fi setting they hired John Gonzalez to write it, who was the lead writer on Fallout: New Vegas.  They then had to spend 4 years updating their Decima engine to make it possible to make, but I'd say it was definitely worth it, given that it won the GDC award for Best Technology and that most of Sony's exclusives have been developing with or slightly modifying the engine for the last few years.  It's a very pretty game.

Finished H:ZD Frozen Wilds DLC.  Only thing I have left in this game are some achievements and side quests missions.  Not even a ton of those either.

I don't often finish a DLC as generally, by the time I get to the DLC I am burnt out.  Says something about the game that I completed both.  If anyone cares I would recommend finishing the Frozen Wild DLC before completing the main game.  I think that order makes more sense.

I absolutely recommend playing this game.

Now I am either going to play Uncharted 4 or Spider Man.

I about about 50% done with Spiderman.  Good enough that I bought the DLC which was half off.

Not the perfect game that some proclaim.  It is still a ton of fun and they did Manhattan right.  You really get the feeling that the city is alive and vibrant and the map is amazing.  I love all the graffiti that they put into this game.  The game itself is the standard 'open world' experience that was established by Far Cry 3.  Unlock areas.  Get side missions.  Pursue the main quest at your leisure.  So of the side quests and action points work well.  Some are tedious as hell.  The beginning of the game it is tough to take on the 'enemy bases'.  By the time you hit about 40% you have enough skill points that, while they aren't easy, become mostly doable in a straight forward fashion.

I do find the game to be a bit too much button mashing but they do ramp it up in a way that I found I knew most of the button combinations to do well.  Button mashing game play is probably one of my least favorite things about consoles.

Story and character development is pretty good, but a tad predictable.  Still the game has some notable high lights, especially the interactions with Mary Jane.

Overall I would highly recommend this game.  They really do a good job of making you feel that you are spiderman swing through the city and webbing up your enemies.

Right now I am playing Detroit: Becoming Human.  Honestly I enjoy this style of game that is very story-centric.  Though I am also finding it to be very hard.  The quick time events are pretty unforgiving.
Title: Re: PS4 Games
Post by: maxbeedo on July 20, 2019, 01:55:17 AM
I thought about starting Detroit, since it was free on PS+, but QTE games have never been that fun to me, though I am very interested in the premise and story.

Bought the Capcom Beat 'Em Up Bundle when it was on sale. Not something I'd play that often now that I've run through each game, but it was fun for the price.  As arcade games, you can definitely tell the point at which they made the games completely unfair just to make you insert more quarters, and the formula was pretty much the same in all of them. Knights of the Round is one of my favorites, although sadly it seems that the SNES port was actually superior to this arcade version.

Due to a water leak underground out by the street outside my house, our fiber line was dead for 10+ days, so I had no internet/phone/cable and had to entertain myself in other ways.  Went back to Monster Hunter World to grind for the miniature/giant crowns for finding the smallest/largest monsters, and to possibly get set up for the Iceborne expansion in September.  Took quite a while, about another 120 hours of play over 3 weeks or so, to get one of the trophies, and now need the final 3 giant crowns for the other.  I'm actually surprised there are 1.4% of players that have these achievements considering the grind and luck required.  I've heard they plan on redoing all of the Festivals they've run since launch leading up to Iceborne so most of the exclusive armor sets can be earned again, which is nice, because I wasn't playing at launch and stopped playing for 10 months or so and missed a lot.
Title: Re: PS4 Games

You could always do Detroit on the Story mode.  I imagine that the QTE wouldn't be so annoying in that case.

So my first play through of Detroit I screwed up one of the lines.  So I played it again and I have to say I was disappointed with one of the twists in that line.  That said I completed the play through gunning for a different result which I got.  At this point I think I am done with the game.
