Title: Diablo 4?
Post by: Sssith on October 08, 2018, 09:57:53 AM
I am sure you people have seen the rumors about a big announcement coming for Diablo.  Somehow I doubt that it will be D4.  I do wonder what the news will be.  Diablo pen and paper I bet!   :P

Diablo MMO.

Diablo MMO.

OMG!  You are probably right.  That would be so sad.

I doubt it will be an MMO. They can't afford to cannibalize WoW subs. I doubt it's going to be a traditional Diablo game either. Looking at HS, HoTS and Overwatch they are all riddled with monetization stuff.  I'll guess an episodic game or something more like D3 with seasons that have enough new content each time they can charge for access to each one.  My longshot guess, Diablo battle royale. Though I think an overwatch engine based battle royale is more likely.

Diablo is one of the top selling franchises is history. Why would they totally change the game style and what has made the franchise so successful?

I'm holding out some small hope for D4, but would also be ok with a D2 remaster.

Because Activision Blizzard has moved on from where it was. The return on investment is so much higher for games with microtransactions. They are prevalent in Hearthstone, Heroes of the Storm, Overwatch and WoW. They tried to put them in D3. They've shoehorned them into Starcraft 2. That's just the way the big players in the gaming industry are moving. To expect D4 to have the same business model as D2 is hopeful at best.

The merger really changed them, they were a for profit company before, but box sales/expansions vs the rest isn't the same.  I'm sure whatever they do will look great and will get hyped.

I also doubt it will be an MMO, although not because it is likely to have any impact on WoW. Money to Blizzard is still money to Blizzard and they're looking to draw people back through the power of nostalgia to the shitshow that is "WoW Classic."

D4 is unlikely as well, given the lack of industry noises about that and the recent launch on the Nintendo switch. More likely another expansion or series of monetised episodic content for players. I suspect the overhead of running D3 is low for Blizzard, as it is for D2 and they probably have a model for adding optional content (at a cost) which won't disrupt the existing userbase and make the fans feel compelled they have to buy it in order to get involved.

Tomorrow we will find something out.  This is the first time I have been anticipating something from BlizzCon.  Hopeful, but doubting that anything good will come of this.

Still have my money on an MMO. ;)

There are so many shit options and that is one of them.

I really can't believe it will be an MMO.  I know money to Blizzard is still money to Blizzard, but maintaining two MMO development teams probably isn't going to give them the return on investment.  I think a standard game supported by micro transactions of the type we are seeing in Starcraft 2 and we have seen with the Necromancer is much much more likely.

Heck I wouldn't be surprised if tomorrow's announcement is just another character addition to Diablo 3.

My money is on something we can't play (not a game) , or can't play on PC.  If its the heroes of Diablo world outside a diablo game, I don't wan tto know

I would love to see, and would pay for, an expansion to D3 or a new class or even both. As long as they have a solo PC version, I'm good.

Me too.  The pay-to-play model is not for me, nor is the whole MMORPG (did I spell that right?) thing, free or not.  But I'll pay for a game, and if I get several hours of fun out of it, then that's a good return on investment.  With the Diablo games, it's more like several hundred hours, so unquestionably good as far as I'm concerned.

If, like with the Necromancer, they add another character and/or some new areas for $15, sure.  More of the same, yeah, but if it's fun, it's worth it.

I'd like something more than just a character class.  For me, the Necromancer just doesn't seem good value for money.  I could buy a completely different game for the same price, and I still haven't explored fully all of the core Diablo 3 classes.  A full expansion would be good, but I can't see it happening.

Oh well. Free Destiny 2, eh? Might as well grab that to add to my library of games I'll never play.

It wasn't clear from the video what was massively multiplayer about it. It looked just like Diablo 3.

I did not pick up on it being mmo, but they did say something about being able to share with others...so... ???

Warcraft 3 remastered...YAWN...

Is it me or are they out of tune with what people are interested in?

Went to the site...and they do think you are going to randomly hook up with other people and play spontaneous events with others.  lolz...no I won't.

Teach me to get excited about something that Blizzard is planning.

Knee jerk reactions going on right now.

Blizzard is getting savaged on twitter, and the youtube trailer has 52k views with 13k dislikes and 467 likes.  Holy cow people are pissed.

So 3%, of the people who gave some type of reaction, of the people watching the trailer gave a positive reaction.

On the other hand, I did call an MMO!

And Timmeh called "something you can't play on PC"...

We both win!

I feel a little bad for the guy who is making the presentation.  When there was no reaction to the announcements you can literally see him start to sweat bullets.

Not a good day for Blizzard.  An even worse day for the Diablo franchise.

I guess I was right about it being something they could milk for microtransactions.  That is the heart of mobile gaming after all.  Didn't expect it to be an MMO because of cannibalising WoW subs, but this is so far away from WoW that that is certainly not going to be a problem.

Amazing. So the "multiple Diablo-related projects" were Diablo for Switch and Diablo for Mobile.  I can't even think of two things I'd be less interested in.  I mean yeah, I bagged on MMORPG Diablo but even that I thought would be PC-based.

Diablo Go

The literal definition of a shitshow.

It's surprising that they were surprised that we didn't want this.

I am still Blown Away by how out of touch they are with the player base.

I think it's time to uninstall Diablo 3 again.

Can you imagine how pissed you would be if you paid money to fly down to BlizzCon with the idea of seeing the new Diablo IP?

I keep thinking back to this post.  For most of us, this is one of the main things we enjoy about a good Diablo game.  Instead of pay once, or maybe the odd expansion, they will try to nickel and dime us forever, as well as trying to charge the price of full games for some in game stuff based on some other games.  Sometimes to get the "best value" I could pay $140 NZ in another game for some secondary currency, but due to the costs of stuff in game, that only goes so far.

If anyone does play this, I think don't pay an actual cent for it.

Also the fact that if you play Diablo3, no matter how much you dislike it, when you are in game, there are no distractions from the gameplay till you leave.  Mobile games will most likely have pop up ads, or ads you can play to skip cool down timers on loot boxes. The same loot boxes some countries have banned due to how they are basically just gambling.

Blizzard are trying to say they are working out this stuff still, but the number of games with no in-app purchases is terribly low.

I think they've reached the point where they just don't know what to do next.  The Diablo storyline, such as it is, is getting harder and harder to follow-up on.  I thought D2 took the original Diablo lore and expanded on it in an interesting way, and while the D3 story wasn't as well received overall, they took us further, gave us the other Lesser Evils, and added more to the lore.  Let's forget for a moment the retconning they did.

My point is that a "real" Diablo 4 would need to not only be a good game in and of itself, something I'm not sure Blizz even knows how to do anymore, but also continue the story in some kind way that isn't completely ridiculous.  And where can they take the story now?  It's done.  Cain is dead.  Tyreal was rebuilding the Horadrim again, but Lorath was lame.  And the buy-once-play-forever business model just doesn't bring the cash.

So they locked themselves in a room and came up with "What if we take Diablo to other platforms?"  Diablo Playstation.  Diablo Switch.  Diablo Go.

It may be time to just close this chapter.  I still play D3, and altogether I got many, many hours of entertainment out of Diablo games.  It was a good run.  But I just don't see where they can go from here and still call it Diablo.

"do you guys not have phones?"

what a douchebag.

Yeah, that was a pretty stupid response considering he's talking to a gathering of Blizzards most hardcore, mostly PC using fans that spent a fuckload of money on tickets and travel expenses.

I also have a microwave, but I don't cook steak in it.
