Title: What are you watching?
Post by: narsica on April 11, 2017, 06:24:56 AM
Saw Arrival this week - great movie, which was fantastically scored. Worth seeing if you haven't already.

Also saw both of Dave Chappelle's stand up shows on Netflix. Chappelle is one of the funniest comedians out there. However, I think the entire audience was stupidly high in both shows - by the time you got 15 minutes in people were laughing at literally anything he said. "Black people have it hard these days..." *audience laughs* *Chappelle looks slightly uncomfortable because he hasn't delivered a punchline yet*

Saw Escape Plan finally.  Arnie + Sly and good supporting cast.  Seems there isn't much hope for a while.  I enjoyed it and will watch it again one day

10 hour international flight with a mild case of food poisoning, a window seat and fat guy snoring next to me... best to cross my legs and watch some movies to take my mind off it.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them - enjoyed it a lot, had some issues with the plot and slightly disappointed at the end, but can't really remember why now.

The Butler - very good film, one I wanted to see on it's release and definitely worth it, great true story too

Creed - I wasn't too bothered when I missed this in the cinema, but I thought it was really good. The main story of Adonis Creed was fairly routine and predictable but well done nonetheless, I thought Rocky's character progression was great though and enjoyed Stallone's performance.

Suicide Squad - an hour into it at 3 am with two hours sleep in the last 40... nope, even now I can't take these movies seriously. Turned it off and listened to music instead.

Btw if you are not an angry Canadian you may find this watchable, even enjoyable and possibly wanting to see it again one day.

Agreed.  The Shining in space without the Jack Nickleson character or the suspense.  Even Jennifer Lawrence couldn't save it, hard as that is to believe.

Saw "The Circle" tonight. Good movie.  It sort of takes a shot at Apple, Google and Scientology all at the same time.  If you watch this movie, you'll understand why I keep a very low internet profile.

Stars Emma Watson and Tom Hanks in that order.  Out of character for Tom - he actually dropped an F-bomb.

Finally got around to watching Moana today.

Fantastic. Excellent. Exciting. Beautiful. Another Disney masterpiece. I mean, I'm a HUGE Disney fan, but this one is out of the park.

Saw Alien:Covenant Saturday night. The movie rocks. Squarely behind 1 and 2 in goodness, but not far behind 2, and that's still a mark of high quality. Infinitely better than the turd Prometheus.

I'm so torn on this one. It looks so dumb and generic. Yet it's so loved. Can't decide wether to rent or not.

Edit: I mean Dr. Strange.

It looks so dumb and generic.

it is. if not for cumberbatch, it might've been green lantern bad. as it is, it falls into "turn off your brain and have an ok time" territory.

My wife being a "Cumberbitch" (her words, not mine), we had to see it the day it came out.  It was decent enough, but I'm not really the superhero movie kind of guy.  My wife enjoyed it because of Cumberbatch.

Best new movie I've seen the last six months is "The Accountant".

50 Shades Darker - So I watched this with the woman for *obvious reasons*.

Just don't. Not even worth it.

Bon Cop Bad Cop - a legit hilarious Canadian cop movie. The entire thing is one massive Canadian in-joke, so non-Canucks might not find this movie as unreasonably amusing as I did.

Star Trek Beyond - Not a bad Star Trek movie, but not a great one either.

If instead of "The End" or "Fin" when the movie is over, it doesn't say "Sorry!" then I would be super disappointed.

I have a soft spot for Canadian comedy; from the old Wayne and Shuster series, to "Aaah, it's the Mr Hell show, to the "Total Drama" series.

*come to think of it, I'll got a soft spot for Canadian SciFi too*

I love those movies in all their terribleness. I still have to see the last one, though.

As for me, I recently bought and am working my way through all 5 Underworld movies. Because Kate Beckinsale. <3

And one of the main characters was a woman.  That is pretty sad.

Watch Logan.  It was a pretty big disappointment.  It was an overly violent super hero movie.  The gimmick at the end with the green drug was transparent at best.  The bad guys where incredibly one dimensional.  The idea that there is a young wolverine is insane.  How the hell is her adamantine skeleton suppose grow as she grows.

binged ozark (netflix series with jason bateman); decent enough but not convinced it has anywhere interesting to go for season two (but that's ok).

guardians of the galaxy 2; again, decent enough. bit of a letdown after the first one, granted that is a high bar.

spiderman homecoming; light and fluffy with several good laugh-out-loud moments. better than the garfield movies but maybe not as good as the first two maguire movies.

tried to talk the wife into It; not sure i could pay her enough to see that.

I watched IT.  IT was better than I expected it to be.  (That could get confusing really fast)
Considering IT is one of my two favorite books of all time, I'll never find a movie adaptation as good as the book.   But I was pleased overall - far moreso than the turd they called a made for TV movie.

Caught The Hitman's Bodyguard a while back and I don't know if I mentioned it.  It was crude, raunchy, overly violent, and vaguely ridiculous.  So basically it was exactly what I was expecting.  So yes, that was just fine with me.  Ryan Reynolds telling a random vendor that Sam Jackson's character has basically ruined the phrase 'motherfucker' forever was delightfully tongue-in-cheek... but don't expect anything deep.

Oh, and my wife bought me Trolls.  Shut up!  It's delightful and cute and fun.  I watched it twice.   8) ;D

I watched this in the past week! I actually quite liked it too.

Also watched an older action movie Stone Cold, about a mulleted Alabama cop who goes undercover in a kinda peculiar motorcycle gang. Really enjoyed it, somewhat of a guilty pleasure though. It's very '80s, though released in 1991.

Re-watched the following:
The Matrix - still great.
The Expendables 1/2/3 - definitely enjoyed them...again :)

IT
Enjoyed it. Some superb performances, especially from a talented group of children. Bill Skaarsgard excellent as Pennywise and his own take is different to that of Tim Curry's. Felt the approach of just making a solid narrative about the kids was a good choice, rather than a sequence of flashbacks from the memory of adults.

I do think that 15minutes of the film were just a waste. The first visit to the Well House did nothing to progress the plot and the division of the Losers was meaningless, given it was reconciled in a decidedly unconvincing manner. I felt those 15mins would have been better spent on having Henry Bowers and his cronies hunting the kids in the sewers, as per the book, given the movie had done a great job of making Henry such a frightening figure. Felt how he was handled at the end was disappointing but, I suspect that means they're going to exercise his character from Chapter 2 completely.

I'm hoping that Chapter 2 tries to make something more interesting of what IT is, as opposed to "space monster" (as per the book) or "giant spider" (as per the mini-series, without explaining why), and actually do what King was on the verge of exploring in the book. That IT is a manifestation of the malaise and difference of the adults of Derry, rather than the thing causing it. But, we'll see.

Ugh I actually agree. I am a Predator fan through and through, I remember watching the first movie when I was about 13 and was hooked. But sadly the latest offering didn't do much for me at all. Dumb sequel naming aside, it had a more AvP movie feel to it, than a Predator movie. There was no building of suspense, just action for the sake of action. I guess it advanced the cinematic storyline, but it felt like really generic action/sci-fi to me.

Venom was excellent. Tom Hardy was a really strong choice for the role (he rocks most roles TBH, slight man-crush). Not a bad word to say about the movie.

Without real spoilers, I thought it was waaaay too long. Pretty much nothing happens in the entire movie. His use of the word "Nigger" seems to be self-indulgent and used just because he can. At 2:45, I thought it could have made a passable 1:30 movie with alot of rework and cutting maybe 50 "nigger" drops out. Almost none of the characters are fleshed out. The plot meanders about without ever doing much until the final 15 or so minutes. There is no pacing because almost nothing happens in the entire movie, outside of pointless racial tension. It was shocking in Pulp Fiction, now it's just tiring.

Aquaman!

It certainly has some flaws but honestly it was a very fun movie that I would recommend.  Of course, Aquaman was my favorite growing up, so I might be biased.  The movie was not as good as Wonder Woman, but like WW, Aquaman thrives because the actor really fits the roll.

My whole extended family took my mother to see Mary Poppins Returns, and it was a whimsy fest.  I think the original was better but this was a good movie for what it was.  Not something I would have chosen on my own.  It was more of a musical than the original I think (tough to remember).

Just finished the last season of Better Call Saul. Very entertaining viewing, fairly slow pace, much akin to Breaking Bad (which is to be expected). Enjoyed seeing the 'backstory' of how Jimmy McGill became Saul Goodman BUT the most interesting character I thought, was Mike. He was the highlight of the show for me and I always looked forward to his scenes. Overall a great show.

To fill the TV show vacuum I started The Wire again. 3rd run through and still love it, hard to beat for a gritty cop drama that also focuses on the character development of the criminals involved.

Watching Orphan Black on Netflix with the wife, which is surprisingly entertaining, despite the kinda ridiculous premise. Good pacing, interesting characters and a catchy plot.

Watch Netflix's Bandersnatch and I enjoyed it.  For those of you that don't know it is a choose your own adventure movie that is part of the Black Mirror series.  Worth watching if you like Black Mirror or you are intrigued by a choose your own adventure TV show.  It took around 1:30 to watch.  The creators say there is around 5 hours worth of material to watch if you figure out all the paths.  They believe some parts of it will never be found.  It is weird and at times does not work well but I thought it was a fun experience.  My daughter, with her friends, tried to watch a bunch of different paths.  My wife and I got some that see hadn't seen.

Also watching Travelers on Netflix which I would give a hearty thumbs up to.

Also saw bohemian rhapsody movie which surprised me by how much I enjoyed it.  I think the actors where excellent in that movie.  They played fast and loose with facts which is why I don't generally like bio-pics.

Aquaman: I basically didn't know anything about it.  Jason Momoa is great and the best thing about the movie.  Apparently some bits like Black Manta fit the old stuff, just looks like something out of 1950s scifi.  I have neutral feelings about it now.

Mary Poppins sequel: I have watched the first a lot recently and this was very dark in comparision.  The kids mum has died (but don't say that).  The house is about to be repossesed and the maid is now just incompetent.  The kids in this one are a lot more mature as they have to in that environment.    Dick Van Dyke definitely the highlight of the movie.  Colin Firth had a good role.   Could have only been made better if after losing Hugh Grant punched him.  Wife complained none of the new songs were memorable.

Han Solo movie is now available on Netflix and I finally got a chance to watch it.  I missed out when it came out in the theaters because I was incredibly busy, but I heard the negative press.  So I went into the movie expecting something that was not good.  The first ten minutes seemed to live up to that billing.  But from that point on the movie got better and better.  Sure there were a couple of flaws but this was one hell of a fun movie and I thought the interplay between the characters was great.  I do not get why this was not more popular.  I thought the guy playing Han did a good job of fitting the roll.  Chewy was awesome and Lando was perfect.  More over I thought the built up his scoundrel person really well.  I think it is kind of a pity that this wasn't well received.  Makes me wonder if it is even possible to make a Star Wars movie that won't disappoint a segment of that fan base.

Currently watching Colony on Netflix (it is a USA Network show).  I don't really recommend it though I am enjoying it.  In the show aliens have taken control of the world and have divided up world into colonies.  They have magically built these huge ass walls to control things.

Love, Death & Robots!

Highly, highly recommend this anthology from Netflix.  I have watched five of the shorts so far and I have liked all and loved two.  Very edgy and NSFW or family.  Adults only need apply.

Saw the newer Blade Runner. Fucking amazing. Every bit as good as the original, and the zen style really appealed to me. The minimalist versions are my favorites of the original as well. Highly, highly recommended.

I'm trying to hold off on watching Blade Runner 2049 (or whatever it is) until my son has seen the original, but I'm running out of patience. :D

I'm working my way through Arrested Development and loving it. It took a few episodes to get into it, but I just made it to season 3 and it's a blast.

Rewatching Westworld as I get ready for season two.  I just love the first season.  There is one major thing that is weak but such a great story as a whole.

+1

villenueve is one of my favorite directors right now. can't wait to see how his Dune remake turns out.

I too enjoyed the BR '49.  I am hesitant to endorse anyone trying to tackle Dune, but Villenueve is one of the few who might be able to pull it off.  Guillermo del Toro is another.

I think those two are at the top of the director pyramid right now.

I'm on the fence about a Dune remake. It's my favorite book of all time, and the 84(?) version is sooooo awful. Complete departure from some of the most key points of the lore. The introduction of the guns as the primary reason the Fremen were successful completely destroys a large point of the book, the superiority of man to technology, and the shaping of the Fremen through repression. The Bene Gesserit are all wrong. I could go on for an hour. Then again, if anyone can pull it off, it would be Villenueve. So,...

I'd love to see Tim Burton tackle Dune. What a glorious train wreck that would be!

True, but Sean Young was in it, so it wasn't all bad. ;)

Season 1 of Westworld is a favorite.  Right now I am catching up on some Game of Thrones as I get ready for the last season.

If I have a six-hour layover in an airport near you, I'll buy drinks and we'll still be going when the plane takes off.  "Usul no longer needs the weirding module."  Oy!

On a much more positive note, we're currently enjoying Into The Badlands.

Not important enough for it's own thread really, so I'll just hijack here.

Cowboy Bebop is going to be a live-action Netflix series. I am totally unsure how I feel about this.

Just got home from seeing What You Leave Behind, which is the Star Trek Deep Space Nine documentary.  Special showing in theaters just tonight, but it'll be on DVD/Blu-ray in August.  Pretty great overall, with a lot of cool stuff, lots of interviews, and having the writing team write a hypothetical present-day Season 8 Episode 1, where the characters and the show would be 20 years later.  Was very meta too, with a lot of in-jokes during the credits about what couldn't make it in.

Almost done with season 3 of the Last Kingdom on Netflix.  I like it.

I just got done binging all of the DS9 epsiodes on Netflix about 3 weeks ago.  I hadn't seen it for years, and loved watching them all again.  I think DS9 was my favorite Star Trek series.

I was always way into it when it was on, but I can understand how this documentary showed how much the actors felt marginalized because they were never shown on their own.  There was always TNG or Voyager on at the same time, and apparently Paramount always treated them as 2nd class for "not being real Star Trek", and they were mostly only shown the worst of the reviews and internet comments about them (which they read many in the doc).  The "planet of the week" style of the other series works for entertainment for casual fans, but the serialized form of DS9 is way better at telling meaningful stories and teaching allegorical lessons about humanity.  Of course, being serialized has also made it age pretty well, considering our ability now to binge watch everything through streaming.  With Paramount not really backing them as much as they should have, they had a lot of problems of affiliates dropping the network or shifting around the air time constantly in the later seasons, so it was hard to get the whole continuous story until the DVDs came out (which were like $140 per season).  Time has been and will be good to DS9.

godzilla. i liked the previous one, but this was terrible. some awesome images, and Ghidorah looked fantastic, but you can get that from a few stills from the trailers. actually struggled to stay awake in the middle, and i almost never do that.

saw john wick parabellum a few weeks ago. not a great movie, but for some reason it was ridiculously entertaining.

watched the first episode of good omens as well. heavy on the exposition, as might be expected. looking forward to continuing.

Anyone who is a scifi fan needs to watch the Expanse.  So much fun.  I am really looking forward to the next season.

Just finished watching Season 3 of Stranger Things.  Overall it was the worst of the 3 but still enjoyable.  The ending was pretty good at least.
