Gaming General / New AAA games on their own publishers platforms
« on: August 08, 2018, 04:51:37 PM »
Well I read that Fallout 76 will be on the Bethesda Launcher, not on Steam.  Fortnite apparently has done well,  I hear CoD 4 will be Battlenet only etc.  I can understand a few reasons for this but it is a bit frustrating too.

I've also read talk about when gaming moves to a Netflix type model, pay a monthly subscription(s) and have a licence to play game(s) for that month vs just buying it.  Might be interesting for some, but at times, knowing its on your account and they can't remove it is nice as well!

Just wondering if anyone out there uses this to help contribute to someone/thing you enjoy?  I think its a pretty cool way to give funds pretty directly to someone you like, and get some extra rewards for it.

I haven't myself, but I see it growing, but luckily people aren't locking the base stuff behind it, more optional extra stuff

Movies & TV / Stranger Things

So got into this recently.  Currently got just the final of season two left now.  Enjoying watching an 80s show I couldn't have watched in the 80s (i was born 81).  I found that Lost Sister episode terrible, especially following the previous cliffhanger.

I'm enjoying Hopper just knock everyone out.  I hope the finale is 11 holding the shadow monster still, while hopper just punches it out.

PCs / Any good freeware backup tools?
« on: March 07, 2018, 02:21:43 PM »

With my recent issues, its highlighted a few areas I've been complacent.  I'm thinking at the moment its just one drive with Windows giving me grief, but there is a lot of stuff I don't want to lose on there.  Working on copying that off is another issue.  I'm aware that SSDs will one day die and thats it.

With all this in mind, is there a good freeware tool that can backup certain folders, keep them up to date in different hard drives, maybe a cloud copy too?  So if one source goes down, there are some other options.

Remember that thing Trump hated and got out of?  Well the other 11 countries are still going ahead, basically parked the things only the US wanted.  Now I hear Trump is talking about possibly rejoining/renegotiating lol

I'm sure they would like better access to the US, but they won't just bend over backward to make it all one way.

General Discussion / Do you drive with one foot or two?
« on: February 28, 2018, 03:46:54 AM »
I drive with two feet. Right gas. Left brake.

My wife is really against it and says she doesnít feel safe. For me itís in muscle memory. She is worried Iíd press both pedals at the same time. I read that newer cars would detect it and cut power to the engine.

I wanted to know what you do and why.

I mentioned if I change, I need to unlearn something, relearn and thatís not the safest in the meantime

Gaming General / Your newest games

I thought we could have a thread to say "Hey I just picked up this game".

I picked up a few from the Xmas sale and some money I got.
Bulletstorm (new version), really enjoyed the last one, this one has the option of Duke Nukem as a playable character, and steam achieves.
CoD MW4 Remastered.  Again .. an old game I enjoyed with some achievements etc
Serious Sam Bogus Detour.  It has Serious Sam in the title :P and achieves.
Omegaland.  This looks fun and was cheap
Plantera: same as above

Movies & TV / Last Jedi thoughts with spoilers
« on: December 19, 2017, 03:00:54 PM »
No thread yet, I'm sure most of us have seen this already.  I saw some talking on Facebook.

A few thoughts I had from my first and so far only viewing:

It seemed to go on a lot longer than I expected
There were a number of plot twist I didn't see coming
Diversity everywhere, this is very much a 2017 movie
Lots of character development
Maybe more humour than normal? There were a few times a bunch of people in the laughed out loud.
Only a few space battles or lightsabre action, but less than some others surely.
At least one kid did a WOOOOOAH moment when the rebel ship jumped and ripped through the other one.
Those penguin things are the new wookies?

Apart from some thoughts of .. "ok, they must be wrapping it up here, then, nope its still going!" I enjoyed it.

I have MANY questions, but I'm sure quite a few of you who know things outside the main movies will understand all the backstory.

I have seen headlines about controversy, but I haven't bothered to read it.  No Jar Jar, no cruddy teen romance.  Overall a pass from me.

I'm not sure how it will be with a 2nd or subsequent viewing.

The Argument Chamber / Zimbabwe and Mugabe

I'm not sure if this is making the news where you are, but after 37 years of corruption, a dictator has been forced to stand down.  He did many things wrong in his overlong time holding onto power. 500 billion% inflation at its peak is the type of stuff you'd only hear in movies.  At 93, he has lived far longer than he probably should have.  But when you can take state funds and fly yourself to the best hospitals around the world that is to be expected.

Who knows if his replacement will be an improvement.  I just know that I've been waiting for this day for a LONG time!

So, this sounds like a major PR disaster, anyone bought games affected by this?  I hear as well as the new Star Wars it was in the new Need for Speed, but patches are making it "not as bad"

The Argument Chamber / NZ General Election 2017
« on: September 21, 2017, 12:06:17 AM »
Well, this has been quite an uncertain time.

Last year our Prime Minister of 8 years decided to leave on his own accord.  His enemys suspected dirt would follow but it hadn't.

Moving into election year, a 3 term government still had poll ratings in the high 40%s The main opposition was getting worse and it seemed we would get our first 4th term party since 1969.

Then shit happened, a bunch that would have been hard to predict:
1) The co-leader of our Green party launches a policy about increasing benefits. At the time she tells a story publicly that she was forced to commit benefit fraud to survive as a single mum and didn't tell the authorities she had people living who helped pay her rent.  She was studying Law at the time. Must has slept through ethics classes.  They get a temporary boost in the polls.  Then it all starts to fall apart.  People find she actually also commited electoral fraud.   Her position changed many times from "I'm not sorry, I won't do anything", to "I'll pay it back if they ask", then "ok, I'm definitely meeting with them", then "wow they were professional, but for a normal person that would have been rough".  Always stuck to "she had to break the law".  The father of her childs family had to say, actually we did support her and the child, don't drag our names through the mud to advance your cause!

Eventually she resigned as co-leader, staying on as a candidate in a seat she won't win.  Her reason for quitting was that the questions and exposure on her family was too much!  The other co-leader fully stood by her.  Their support went from 15% to maybe around 5% and possibly not being in the next parliament!

2) The leader of the main opposition party shot himself in the foot in an interview and quit.  Deputy becomes leader and their rating goes up roughly 15% over time.  They got a massive input of cash from donations and on the cusp of winning!

3) A 30 year MP who basically was the only voice of his party saw poll results that he would lose,  he just quit.  He had been propping up the current government for 9 years.

4) A new movement got started at the end of last year. I predict with time they will end up as a 3rd major party as they are going for some out there policies based on need.

A few smaller scandals, some of the biggest polls had been contradicting each other, but now they are in line and showing either side may come out on top.

Election day is Saturday. Advanced voting is higher already than all of the previous election.  There is a lot of people wanting change .. but a big amount who want to keep things as they are ..

Too close to call!
