Hearthstone

Anyone playing Hearthstone?

I used to play when it first came out, but stopped about three years ago because I didn't have time.

The other night I was playing D3 on EU and chatting to SZ who was in game in Hearthstone and I decided to give it another go. It is now available on Android, so I have installed it on my phone and iPad.

Previously I had been concerned about trying to get back in and being far behind in terms of missing the new sets, but I have been playing non-Ranked standard and actually winning more than I'm losing with my old card so feeling pretty encouraged. Although I am not seeing many new cards around.

So, I was wondering, how important are the new Hearthstone cards and if I am going to acquire packs which expansion has the best cards? - there seem to be about 6 expansions to choose from...

The current expansion has some crazy good stuff, so look into that - otherwise, I really liked Un'Goro so focus on thsoe two, other than specific cards would be my suggestion.

I play a bit, but I get frustrated with it quite easily so never for too long at once.

I played beta quite a bit, stopped rather early after the release, took it back just as Grand Tournament was released and never completely stopped since, so yes, quite a bit
;) At times I get a bit frustrated by uninteresting metas so just do my dailes a couple of times a week (like RIGHT NOW given that token druids are completely broken and that's at least 6 or 7 out of ten games in ranked you see that deck ) but otherwise play quite regularly.

My son plays this game more than he probably should.  Never tried it myself.

Oh! Just in case you don't know - if you complete the first single player fight for the Frozen Throne expansion, you get a free Frozen throne Legendary. They're pretty good.

Thanks!

I'd forgotten how the daily challenges can suck you in!

Thankfully a few more days in and I am still managing fairly well without many of the newer cards. Although I do have 2,800 Arcane Dust if I decide I really need something.

How does this game work?  Do you buy card packs with real $ or is there a way to earn cards?

The game is free and it is possible to play the game completely for free by winning packs of cards which expand your collection, but it is also possible to spend $$$ to buy packs of cards to speed up the collecting of new and more powerful cards.

In terms of game-play its like a dumbed down Magic the Gathering where you can only play cards and take actions on your turn. But you also have a hero with a special ability that you can activate so it is still a strategically interesting and fun game.

There are also numerous formats - Single Player vs. AI mode, Casual constructed deck mode, Competitive constructed deck mode and a format called arena which is like a M:tG Draft game where you are shown 90 random cards and have to pick from them and build a deck of 30 cards then see if you can string together a win streak against other people with similarly built decks to earn rewards (gold and card packs).

The game also has daily challenges which you can complete to win gold which you can use to buy cards or entry into Arena competitions.

Played quite a bit of it today.  Rather addicting.  Surely hope it doesn't bring back any MtG ideas.  I can't afford that  :P

Hopefully not...

I don't have time or.money for MtG anymore. Not even online. But I like that Hearthstone can be played for short periods of time when I have 15 minutes spare.

Actually, the last iteration of the Magic tG game is pretty good, there is now actual card building, and very much like Hearthstone doing dailies ensures you can reasonably keep well with the latest expansions without forking cash. While I stopped playing Hearthstone I played that, and stopped becaus I wasn't overly fond of the meta ion the latest expansions, but the game itself is great.
