Maybe the old laptop is 12" or 13".  I'm not sure now.  Whatever the standard was seven or eight years ago.

Yeah, optical drives seem to be optional these days.  Our new PC didn't come with one, so I picked up a USB DVD burner for like $40.  I wanted to go Blu-ray, but they were out of stock.  I figured I'd still need an external drive to install software that we still have on CDs and DVDs, but most of it didn't run under 64-bit.  I did burn a CD a couple weeks ago, though.

Anyway, if we ever need to, we can hook up the external drive to the laptop, so for now we won't need it.  Good thought, though.

My old laptop has a 12/13 inch screen and because of my second monitor I was actually willing to go less than 15, but they didn't seem to exist in gaming quality machines (I guess video card, RAM, etc. take up space so you might as well put a bigger screen on it). 15 inches only just fits in the space on my desk so I couldn't go larger. Battery life and portability were secondary considerations for me as I still have my old one to take away - although the battery is shot on that one so I am thinking of getting another supercheap one. Another thing to consider is whether you need an optical drive, I have a cheap USB one for when I want to watch a DVD or install an old game or whatever.

Thank you both for your recommendations.  I probably should have been more clear.  By "recommendations" I guess I meant "things to know about laptops these days, and things to keep in mind while shopping for one".  Specific models do give me an idea of what I can get for how much money, though, so that also helps. :)

It seems to me that when it comes to a laptop, the difference between 15" and 17" could be pretty significant.  On the other hand, the main PC only has a 22" monitor, and I'm thinking of upgrading that, which means the 22" would be available for multiplayer gaming if she wants to hook it up to the laptop.  I'm assuming a 15" screen is fine otherwise, since that's what she's used to, and laptops with 17" screens are obviously bulkier.  She already complains about carrying it around.  I personally don't see why she needs one in the first place; she doesn't use it that much.  But I'm pursuing it because of the D3 angle.  It'll be something we can do together, and now that I've introduced her to (gotten her hooked on) Diablo III, we occasionally fight for the PC.

I never keep up with the industry so I can't give any well-thought recommendations. I bought a new laptop a few months ago and after a bit of research I realised my budget wasn't enough for more than the bottom end of gaming laptops, which meant I didn't bother to find out what the top-end tech is like.

I ended up buying a Dell Inspiron 7000 series gaming laptop, I think this one here: Price would be equivalent to slightly over US$1000. It's a 15 in screen, but since I use it side-by-side with a monitor that's not an issue for me. I've been really happy with it so far, it runs D3 and Elder Scrolls Online both at max settings with no problems.

For less than $1000 on Newegg you can chose from a few gaming laptops (ASUS ROG and MSI brands) that have 17" screen and a dedicated graphics card.  Smaller screen sizes will mean more and cheaper options.  I'm not sure what you want to spend, but you could run D3 on laptops for less than that because you don't need a separate graphics cards for D3.  Use the filtering options on the left side of the screen to narrow down your options.  I'd go for a dedicated card, an i7 chip, and 16GB RAM if you have the cash to spend.

Amazon might have some similar deals too.  I didn't check there.
Diablo 3 / Laptop Recommendations?

My wife's laptop died, and we need to replace it.  We now have the same problem as we had earlier this year when we replaced the main PC: We're several years out of touch with what's out there and how much things cost, but it must be able to run Diablo III.

I was pleasantly surprised to find out that in the grand scheme of things, D3 does not require much in terms of RAM, graphics, etc.  I honestly had no idea.  We had about a grand to spend, and just bought the juiciest 64-bit machine we could find for $1000, since pretty much anything out there (above the most basic student PC) could run D3 pretty well.  Everything comes with decent graphics and plenty of RAM these days, it seems.  Good!

Is it the same with laptops?  Once again, we have about a grand to spend, and I'm guessing/hoping that we can find a laptop that can run D3.  I know that in the old days, graphics on a laptop weren't really robust unless you specifically went high-end.  Can we spend a grand and anything in that price range should be plenty?  In that case, it would just come down to size, looks, features, etc.?  Or is it trickier than that?

Any recommendations?

I thought Bladerunner 2049 had an interesting story to tell that was more engaging than the original movie, although parts of the script could have been excised without detriment to the narrative.

Visually it was ok. I found the visuals were rather sterile compared to the claustrophobia and decay of the original movie. I appreciate the look they were trying to go for but, at times it felt more like I was in Mega City One than I was in the Bladerunner universe.

I'd definitely have ended the movie about 30secs to a minute sooner than the cinematic cut.
