Title: Grim Dawn is Fun
Post by: Sssith on June 26, 2017, 12:19:56 PM
Finally got around to playing this and I have to say that I am hooked as of now.  This has been a very fun surprise for me.  Right now I am playing  a two handed Shaman who is somewhere around level 26.

I am finding this game to have more in common with D2 LOD than D3.  D3 was fun in its own way but was less about character building and more about End Game.  GD is more focused on different builds and the journey through the different levels.

I am curious if anyone else is playing this here.

I never heard of it.  This likely surprises nobody.

Interested to see who else played and liked it.

Pretty sure I've been saying for ages that Grim Dawn is awesome.

It's the best ARPG since Diablo 2. All the best parts of D2 combined with the best parts of Titan Quest (the classes). All set in a post-apocalyptic fantasy world with a great art style to boot.

TheNix was into it.  I don't have time for another one of those now.

Yes this.

I can see myself sinking a lot of hours into this.  To me this is the best cross between D2 and Titan's Quest which were my two favorite ARPGs.

Does it have an Isenhart's Case in it?  It must if you like it so much!  ;)

If it does I have not found it yet.   :(

I think you would really enjoy the game.  That said you seem pretty happy with D3.

I might get it during the Steam Sale.  I think it is $13 or something.  D3 has the necromancer pack out today, so that will keep me busy for awhile!

But Grim Dawn is like a whole game FULL of necromancers! And it's better than D3. :D

I played Grim Dawn for something like 10 months and it was great.  Unfortunately there we so many patches and hotfixs over that time that the constant dabbling with the gameplay drove me nuts.   If there is one thing that pisses me off more than anything else is constant shifting of the goalposts. I gave up on it and decided to give Path of Exile another try.  I might try GD again after the expansion settles down.

Path of Exile is poop on a stick. :P

I enjoyed PoE...I have a difficult time pin point exactly why I don't want to play it any longer.

I will see where I am at with GD once I finish Veteran level.  I'm not exactly sure but I am guessing I am 60% done with this level.

I say PoE is poop because this is 2017 and there is no excuse these days for gender-locked classes. None. Fuck them.

Well to be honest you can choose a gender in GD but I have a hard time telling the whether the toon is female.  They all are burly.

Not all armors are so bulky that you can't tell. At least, I can always tell the difference.

But the choice exists. That's what matters.

Grim Dawn seems to be (to me at least) a far more intuitive game the PoE.  I generally liked DG more overall but that final boss fight is a complete pain in the arse in GD and I haven't been able to complete it on the highest difficulty level, whereas the final fight in PoE was doable.  Getting older is starting to have an impact on my ability to play these newer games but when the expansion for GD comes out, I'll give it another run.

I can see that happening even though I have not gotten to the end yet.  Still in Veteran so a long way to go.  Even in Veteran there is this one mini-boss that I have not figured out how to beat.  Getting to him is easy.  Killing him...not so much.

Just started playing this today.  Giving POE and Battle Brothers a rest.

I'M SO CONFUSED! - Never played TQ and the skill tree is....different.  :)

Builds are easy to screw up.  You can buy back the points, so it is not too bad if you mess up.  Honestly I watched about 20 minutes worth of youtube videos to get the gist of what was going on.  You also have to learn about Devotions which are unique to this game.

I've finished what might be Act I(?).  Have a commando level 22 or so.  My last gaming session this morning was the first that it all started coming together.  Before that, I was just destroying stuff by mashing buttons. :)

There is a lot to recommend with this game.  Hopefully, it continues to impress.

I am back to playing after a 4th of July lull.

I think I am getting close to the end of veteran mode.  I am level 31...it is slowly getting more difficult.  There is one boss, I forget his name, that I have not been able to kill yet.

So I am slowly discovering that certain side bosses are really difficult to kill.  I am also surprised to see that I am not nearly as far along in Veteran mode as I thought.  The world is pretty damn big from a gaming point.  And they generally make it worth your while to do full clears.  I am level 39 and I still have a ways to go.  Anyone know if the areas scale to your level?  I am surprised if that is the case because then it would be possible to get to near end game level without even reaching Ultimate level.  I am nearly half way to the level cap and not out of my first game play.

The other thing that is surprising me is that I would have to imagine that HC is really really tough.  There are time you are cruising around and you turn the corner and you are mobbed by three boss packs.  They hit you with some spell that slows you down and there is no way in hell that you can get away.  So far it doesn't seem possible to out level the monsters that you encounter.

Tough game.

Also looking forward to level 40 as I have some blue items to put on.

As far as I know, each area scales with you but only within a specific fairly small level range, so you can easily outlevel an area or be underpowered.

I seem to be in the under-leveled group.  I'm always fighting mobs who are "orange" and that is at least two levels above me.  At level 32, I was fighting a boss who was level 39...that didn't go so well.  Sad part is, I only got the one shot at it because you need a skeleton key to get there.  I guess there is a blue print to make it, but I don't think I have it.  Certainly learning a few things to do differently with the next character.

The game hasn't grabbed me like I thought it might (see focus and gaming thread), but it's good.

My complaint before was that I always felt that the monsters are always higher level than I am.  That does seem to be the case most of the time.

The quest with the key I think I got lucky...in that I read somewhere that I should hold off on that quest for a while.  So while I earned the key I did not actually use it.  At least you can craft a new one.

So ... right now I am doing a build that I found.  Always a good way to get started and I will certainly finish Veteran mode this way.  Not sure if I will continue as I have a hankering to do my own build.  With that in mind I am thinking of doing a tanky assassin.

Blademaster (http://grimcalc.com/build/1009-4u2NrW)

This is what I am thinking of right now.  Tweaks to come...and I won't be starting this too soon.

Blademaster (http://grimcalc.com/build/1009-yDGIRf)

Switched from Forcewave to Cadence.  Forcewave has a cooldown which means it is not good as a main skill.

I'm playing a commando (I think).  Soldier/Demolitionist using cadence and blitz.  Blitz is just awesome but on a 5 sec cool down.  Cadence is so-so but every third swing hits like a truck.  Demo is providing fire damage through flame touched and temper.  Using as much gear as I can find that provides +fire %.

I didn't go veteran yet.  Just playing normal/easy mode.  Currently level 35.

Cadence seems to rely on attack speed a lot.

Have you gotten comfortable with Devotions?  There are a couple that boost Attack speed.

I am currently 44 or 45...questing beyond Homestead.  I found another area that requires one of the those keys.  Haven't done either of them.

What are Devotions?   ;D  That should answer THAT question.

I'm just following a guide, take a bit of +physical damage etc.  Haven't really done any research into the Devotion system.

If I understood correctly, you can afford to miss a shrine or two.  There are more shrines than devotion points allowed.  That  said, I waste time hunting them down.

Tutorial for Devotions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fA3U8f4loVw

Basically it is a system of constellations.  Each constellations give you bonuses.  Some are skills augmentors.  Across three difficulties you get a maximum of 50 devotion points.  You get a point from fixing or redeeming shrines.

Devotions are also associated with a God.  So they are divided up in green, red, blue, gold, and purple.  Some devotions need a point (or more), in one or more colors in order to use them.  So you have to plan out how to get from the basic devotions to ones that have better bonuses.  You can also respec your devotions.  This is useful, not just because you might mess up, but it allows you to do some trickery to get to the better ones.

Anyway it is a nice thing to puzzle over.

Yeah, I was being sarcastic.  I know what it is, just haven't even really looked at it to figure it out.  I'm just putting points where they tell me to :)

Sorry about that.  Keep forgetting that sarcasm doesn't translate well online.  The main reason I don't communicate much online.

Started up a Witch Hunter and not really following a guide this time.  I think it fits my style a bit more than Commando.  Acid damage with poison explosions is kind of cool.  Level 18, time to pay the Warden a visit.

Once I finish my Veteran play through I will probably start over with my own build.  Witch Hunter does seem like an interesting class, good luck with the Warden.

Is there an ETA for the expansion?  I want to play this again, but with the new classes/areas/etc announced, I'd almost rather wait before restarting.

Expansion is out today, and the original game is $7.50 on Steam.  You can pick up both together for ~$25 today.

I need to get back to the game.  Between this and Elite Dangerous I have a full plate.

I started idling/selling Steam cards the night before last in order to pick up this xpack. I'm up to a bit over $15, so I'll probably be able to nab this sometime this weekend. Looking forward to the necromancer - I've heard only good things.

Nabbed it. Necromancer is good. Working on a Death Knight (necromancer/soldier). I'm gonna be a skellie-mancer in massive armor with a greatsword and just wreck the world. :D

Your first skill raises 3 skeletons. They are insanely fast, wickedly durable, and they mow down everything. They spawn randomly with either melee weapons or crossbows.
