Do you drive with one foot or two?
« on: February 28, 2018, 03:46:54 AM »
I drive with two feet. Right gas. Left brake.

My wife is really against it and says she doesnít feel safe. For me itís in muscle memory. She is worried Iíd press both pedals at the same time. I read that newer cars would detect it and cut power to the engine.

I wanted to know what you do and why.

I mentioned if I change, I need to unlearn something, relearn and thatís not the safest in the meantime

I learned to drive in a manual, so it's left foot clutch and right for gas and brake. Even in an auto I stick to the right only for gas and brake.

Your wife is right.

Using both feet for gas and breaks is bad.  It is especially bad if you ever want to drive stick shift, though this is a dying art.

I would not count on a computer to save you if you are in a bad situation and accidentally pressed both the break and gas at the same time.

Always one foot for me.  I don't need to lift my Size 16 foot to hit the brakes, I can just pivot it one way or the other to hit either pedal (with my heel on the floor).

Just so you know, I learnt to drive in a manual, and went to an auto later.  So in a manual I do left foot clutch, right the other 2.    I'm not sure if some of it was by accident.  I never owned a car till I was 30, sometimes I might have driven a few times a year.

I used some steering wheel and pedals for some games, that had two pedals, and you used both feet for a game.

I can understand if you only do it one way, you would think the other sounds a bit mental and risky.

I also rung our local driving school.  They said I should break the habit.  However it might be useful if I race cars one day ;)

You should absolutely break the habit.

You learned the right way with clutch.  Left foot clutch, right foot acceleration and breaking.  Why you switched back to left foot break and right foot acceleration is puzzling.  But it sounds like you don't drive a lot.  Worth breaking the habit if you can.

One more for the "left on clutch, right for brake/accelerate".
Very bad form to brake with left foot, this will leave you unable to drive a manual car.

That muscle memory is even older.  My last time driving a manual is probably 6 years ago?  But it comes back pretty well about not stalling, gear changes and just doing everything.

This.
I also learned in a manual, so same for me as for Godji.

Now I drive hybrids, which are all automatics, so I use only my right foot.

I always have both feet with me, but I only use one to drive.  But I make up for that by using my hands, too.
