General Discussion / Re: Kill it with fire

As mentioned, I'm just fully over the bots.   I think if they weren't here I wouldn't really mind it.  Its just brought me down and made me think of some other websites that have a more negative than positive experience most of the time which is sad as over close to 20 years I've loved this place in its various forms.

I think I need to change some of my browser auto open tabs, take out this and Facebook which has some nice stuff, but also a cesspit of funk and "sponsored posts"

its spam, it wants you to click on the link in the signature. I prefer yours to get touched, fisted, smashed or strangled.

Thanks, for that.  Not sure if you've ever gone to replay a game you haven't played in ages, maybe a decade and found all your knowledge has gone.  I'm trying to get that captured for my benefit and if anyone else gets something from it, thats a bonus

If you suggest something I may do it.  Ideally something that has good logical places to stop and start.

I've been  having a great time making some content for youtube, mostly just some gameplay with commentary.  I'm quite new at all this, so just learning more things as I go and making a few mistakes.  I've managed to teach a few people some stuff they didn't know, and had a few people following to see me do something others hadn't done before which is good and inspires me to do the next lot of levels.

I've been playing the 1993 classic Blake Stone.  I've been playing on the toughest skill difficulty, trying to go for 100%, but also keeping the good NPCs alive which others haven't done in the past.  I've so far done 2 of the 6 episodes.

Also many of the levels I'd never played before, so I'm taking my time to record a blind/first playthrough where I'm wandering around, doing my best to find the exit and not die.  You only ever had one first experience, so capturing it for the lols is fun to do for me.  I've had some levels where I die a bunch and try to do better on my next life.

Another game I've been making recordings for is The Talos Principle.  Its over 7 years old now, but has been fun to replay.  Some content I haven't seen in years.

Trying to work out which games I'll do next, might go to some other genres. It will be a mixture of replaying old favourites and first experiences, some new, some neglected stuff.

that bot is bullshit, keeps popping up and posting crap.  I'm getting tired of removing its posts.

I went back to Blake Stone: Aliens of Gold.  The awesome FPS from the Wolf 3D engine which came out 1 week before Doom ..  I think if that game had a few months to live under its own steam it would be much better remembered.  A cool source port helps with resolutions and modern controls

I don't really care when a game was released, some were played for the first time, some a continuation.   My gaming experience of the year wasn't so much software as Hardware when I finally bought a new gaming pc in over 11 years.  Also real life stuff was messed up.

In terms of games played.

Super 3d Noah's ark. This was made from the wolf3d engine, so old as shit. Did some more challenges I hadn't finished, still have some big ones to do.

Masked Shooters 2: A crappy FPS where you shoot bots.  I got it to 100% achievements, just needed a small bit of relief.  Probably won't play it again.

Masked Shooters: I picked up the first game cheap, repeated the experience.

Black Mesa: Like Sssith mentioned, its a sweet as game, and on the new PC runs amazing.  I got 100% achievements here, including the "carry object through game" stuff which is both awful and rewarding.  Only had one achievement that was a pain in the end, but a mixture of reading other peoples frustrations and some good thinking I got past it.  Would be in my top 5.

Left 4 Dead 2: Due to a large update in 2020, I replayed it and it was amazing how much game specific knowledge I'd forgotten.   It was a bit easier later on my new PC but showed me I want to capture some videos of myself for later.

Frankenstein, Master of Death.  I went back to a HOG where i'd missed an achievement.

Faerie Solitaire Harvest: My 3rd of these games, sometimes I just need a card game I can start for a few minutes, or 20.  I'm now up to a point there are just long grinds left in it.

Bridge Constructor Portal: This is a bit of an odd game, the controls seem a bit clunky.  I've had a few starts and stops in it.  Got up to a level fairly early on and just seem stuck.

Walking Dead Games: I seemed to play a few in a row, they are all sort of the same.  I have the last game in the series .. accidentally saw a spoiler and haven't played it yet.  I did play these ones though. Season 2, Michonne, A new frontier.

Secret Agent HD: Definitely in my Top 5 games.  I loved the old 2D Apogee platformer, so was quite excited they released a new one.  Had a new episode with increased difficulty, steam workshop and level editor.  Managed to get 100% achievements.

Monster Bash HD/Crystal Caves HD: I'm lumping these together as I played a few levels, will probably do more this year.  Not quite the nostalgia of Secret Agent though.

Quake:  Top 5.  Unexpected new engine, new episode for the 25th anniversary!  At first the game wouldn't run on my old potato.  I managed to find a command line to get it going was was able to go back through things i'd played many times and get Steam Achievements.  Something I'd been wanting for ages.  The fact it was free was sweet.  Having them change the monster AI in Nightmare pissed me off a bit.    Getting a chance to finish it off in the new pc, especially that new episode was a great gaming moment of the year.

Fable Anniversary: Started this with my kids, only in the early days.  Back in the day I finished the game.

Serious Sam 4: Could only really buy it once I got my new PC, I think I got up to the second level so far .. just had a lot of other things to do.

Serious Sam Kamikaze Attack: weird 2d thing that came to steam finally, got to 100% achievements.

Devolver Land expo: This came out in 2020 when trade shows couldn't happen.  Played it on the new PC as it could run properly.  Got up to 100% achievements.   Fun little gimmick.

Tony Hawk Pro Skater HD: Something I did with kids a bit, they were disappointed its not on the store anymore.

Cod 4 Modern Warfare Remastered: Another one that runs awesome on new PC vs old.  Had started in 2018, managed to do everything except one final challenge on veteran.

Ion Fury: started didn't really play much yet.

Age of Empires Definite Edition: started early up, haven't done more yet but loving it.

Serious Sam 3 VR: I don't have VR, but did most of the campaign, couldn't work out how to do final boss in VR

Red Dead Redemption 2: started first mission, look forward to rest

D2R: Picked up on switch first, got up to Hell Ancients, picked up on PC, haven't really played yet.

PCs / Re: Need advice on mew computer

DNT: I found myself in a similar position, my last pc was from 2010.  Have you had a look at various prebuilt systems just to get an idea of what different budgets can buy?  Its also interesting to see at which price points they replace an inferior technology with better stuff.

Stuff like "hard drives" have come a LONG way.  From the old 3.5 inch to SSD which I had in 2010 and it was amazing, tech has moved along a bit more to  what I have an NVME drive.  I have 1TB of storage but at first firing it up, I never saw a windows loading screen. I had bios then just in windows and loaded .. mind blown!

Yeah video cards are pricing, stupid crypto bullshit and everything wanting a microchip in it these days.  You'll know the type of things you want.  Look at recommended specs, not minimums.  Do you want this to last another 13 years?

How dusty is your old case?  Unless its super sentimental, consider a new one, no dusty, special mounts to hold the supersized video card in place.

RGB: doesn't technically improve things but looks sweet. we have come a long way from biege bricks of computers

Do you care if its a full size thing? or you can get a very computer box with everything you'd need these days?

I got a machine with 16GB of RAM which was great .. then got another 16GB on a sale in November.

Windows 11 seems too rough around the edges for now ..

Edit: forgot to say, I also picked up a brand new monitor.  Keep in mind your existing screen would work, but I got a new monitor to take advantage of my graphics card.  It has newer options for ports and I got a curved screen which I don't even notice anymore.  You can get a large screen but doesn't take up too much space on your desk!

Diablo (now with Diablo 4 Hype) / D2R Upcoming patch 2.4, buffs, ladder etc

Text version of the dev update here
video one here (90 minutes)

I know on discord that this stirred up some controversy, so will be interesting to see what  happens here.  Looks like current meta things will still work just fine, but skills that have never been used will be viable, other mercs viable etc.  That will be good to have options.   Waiting 4 months for  the option to make some new runewords is fine.  There are a bunch I haven't been able to make in over a decade now ..

I think once more details are out that I WILL make some new characters, I think I'll move over my twinking gear from the original game.

not as tedious as a wolfbarb built before respecs were a thing, not putting any points into combat skills!  Its a long time before you can use that helmet

Yep I have a long list I could talk you through. Looks like those are mostly built around skill plans. Have you thought of builds around certain items? Whirlwind sin with chaos? Wolfbarb with woflhowl too etc.

Having that variety will help you keep going

Yeah saw the news.  Immortal will come out .. sometime.  From its annoucement its been super slow, you wonder how much they were redoing after the initial reaction.   and of course all the turmoil in the company.
