I saw sssithy on voice chat so said hello to him. Chatted for a minute before I had to pop back to work.

@supermatt. Maybe a 2nd poll. Why did they stop coming to forum? Follow up question. What, if anything, would make them come back and post here more?

In 4.5 years of this iteration of the forum, only these people have posted more than 100 times.  Only 22 others posted between 11-99.    But why is that? Its not a new thing from discord, but I'm wondering how much is with changing times.  In the early 2000s there was no social media, there were no smartphones.    Back then you were sitting in front of a computer, it was a deliberate thing you chose to go to a forum, it didn't look as bad as it does on a mobile device.  There was more content there, somethings only there.  Look at the amount of stuff on Youtube or other platforms.  Back then it was all typed and some pictures.

How much is due to our existing users moving on as passions or free time changes?
A lack of new people coming in is a factor too.

Wonder how much its "peaked" for its time.  I'm sure the newer generations aren't going to forums like we all did (multiple generations) in the mid 2000s.  I'm counting millenials, gen X, baby boomers in here.

And then we have the problem that forums are a permanent record till they aren't.
The backup is not working.  I have mentioned this to our faithful Admin, and I wait unable to do much.  I've had a look in the WayBackMachine.  Thousands of posts are available, but you can't easily find what you need.   As someone who is quite sentimental at times it makes me sad I can't go back to old stuff easily now.  The fact some of the stuff before is gone forever is a different story.  I'd love to see things from 2003 to mid 2004.

All of my IRL friends stopped playing "new" video games a long time ago, even as the industry has exploded in popularity.  Most of them have only maintained their MMO subscriptions or kept up with only one franchise, and a lot of the websites I used to chat on like 1up.com, gametrailers.com, and usgamer.net have all disappeared (I still follow the people that worked there but their new places don't have good forums if at all), so this has often been the only place I could talk about new stuff I've played, even if it sometimes felt like I was talking into the void.  I don't think any newer platform like Discord, Youtube or Twitch quite handles the same topic-by-topic deep discussion you can have on a forum, at your leisure, with considered arguments.

I will post here until this place dies, or I die, whichever comes first.  :P

The Kotaku article is right about the fact that discord and forums and fundamentally different have different strengths and weaknesses.

But even with a GO Discord I am likely to post more here than I have in recent years purely down to increased engagement with D2 and this community.

While I'm sure there are workarounds, sharing media on a forum is definitely less convenient than what it is for discord, to the extent that a lot of the time I can't be bothered with the effort.

But, I'm glad to back back here talking to you fine folk and glad to be chatting to people on Discord that we've not spoken to in years.
