Diablo (now with Diablo 4 Hype) / Season 25: Shard My Pants
« on: December 13, 2021, 10:30:56 AM »
I've read up about the new Soul Shards, watched a few videos, and now I have a bunch, and 2 Hellforge Embers.  From what I can tell, they start with a buff and a debuff, and add buffs as you raise their level.  Also, they seem to favor melee characters, which kinda sucks for me, since I favor Demon Hunter and Wizard.

Anyway, with only 2 Embers, I'm a bit wary of using them.  I wish the drop rate was just a little higher for them.  Not a lot, but just a little, since it's a given that you'll use them up, and probably waste a bunch of them as you figure out how they work and with which characters.

But I've started my Demon Hunter.  She's got 100 Paragon Points or so, having some fun.  Haven't used any of the new Shards, though.

Diablo (now with Diablo 4 Hype) / Season 23: Follow You, Follow Me
« on: April 04, 2021, 08:55:27 AM »
I like what they've done with the Followers.  Well, at least with Lyndon (the Scoundrel), who's the only one I've tried so far.

I'm running a Demon Hunter, and people were saying that using the Follower with the same mainstat should be the way to go now.  I like that, because I tried all three followers a few different ways back when I was first starting with D3, and ended up just going with Kormac for every character.  He's an extra meat shield, plus he heals and helps with resource regeneration.  Lyndon has the best smart-ass remarks, and Eirena is cute and I'm usually fine with a cute blonde hanging around, but when it's life or death, you can't really mess around.

I figured they wouldn't change the look in-game when you equip them with different armor and stuff, but was pleasantly surprised that you see them wielding the weapon you give them.  Lyndon has a Windforce, and it not only appears in-game but also knocks monsters back.  Angelina found a Demon Machine (shoots explosive bolts) and when she outgrew it, she gave it to Lyndon, and he was shooting explosive bolts for a while, and they were actually killing things, too.  Very cool!

The "Emanates" stuff seems to be another way to get more Nephalem powers going, so that's fun.  Didn't get a whole lot of time to play yesterday, but got Angelina to 70 and have the first four pieces, plus she had Haedrig make the Captain Crimson's set for her, so she's doing alright.

Diablo (now with Diablo 4 Hype) / Season 22: Clone Wars!
« on: November 25, 2020, 10:29:26 AM »
Hey, them Shadow Clones do some crazy damage, eh?  That is, when they're not just standing around watching you.

I like the extra cube slot.

Nice, making all the newer sets the Gifts this time.  But since they don't have Set Dungeons, you have to complete another set before you can do the Conquest.  Smart.

I started a Barbarian, was gonna name her Barbarella, but in a fit of laziness I just went with Jane (Fonda, duh -- Fonduh!)  She did her GR 70 last night and got some silly bracers for her Primal.  I recycled them.  Finished collecting the IK set this morning, so I'll probably try to Set Dungeon later.

Diablo (now with Diablo 4 Hype) / Chance to Cluck
« on: November 08, 2020, 08:33:43 AM »
I have to admit, I've never figured this one out.  But I got a Primal, so I thought I'd show it off.  :P

Same with things like The Butcher's Carver.  It roars sometimes, but does it do extra damage or something?  I've always wondered.

Diablo (now with Diablo 4 Hype) / Season 21: Trials of Distraction
« on: July 05, 2020, 01:41:53 PM »
So that's kinda different.  Every once in a while, colors change and things go batshit for a while.  Folks on the net have been whining about this season since before the season even started.  I don't care.  I think it's interesting that Blizzard continues to devote any resources at all to this game, and I'm grateful for whatever I can get.  And I'm amused at the reactions on the net, so that's a plus.  Yeah, it's silly and distracting, but I still gotta give them credit for trying out different things.

Anyway, I got a chance to check out that new DH set after the patch, and yeah, it's another "cruise around really fast and destroy everything" kinda build, but whatever, I kinda liked it and would like to see how far I can go with it.  I started a DH, and man she hit the 60's Slog hard.  Worst I've had in a while, it felt like absolutely torture.  Then at 67, she got a couple of great drops in short succession.  The Crossbow which cranks up Rapid Fire to insane levels (she happened to be using Rapid Fire at the time), Dawn which cuts your Vengeance cooldown by 2/3, and just for fun, an Obsidian Ring.  So the last few levels flew by, and the first drop once she made 70 was the Quiver which removes Rapid Fire cost.  Sure, why not?  I put together a pretty fun Rapid Fire build a few Seasons ago, and things seemed to be pointing that way for right now.  Second gem to drop was Legacy of Dreams, another piece which fit with the Rapid Fire build since there isn't a set for it.

I haven't even bothered finishing the Season Journey because honestly, I don't really care for the Shadow/Impale build.  At some point I'll end up finishing it anyway, so no biggie.  For now, I'm gonna keep cruising with the Rapid Fire.  By the time that tops out (I think last time things started getting really tough around 80 or 85), I should have at least one or two sets/builds to choose from.

I forget now what the official name is, and I'm too lazy to look it up, but you know what I mean.

I like Hydras, so I decided to play a Wizard, even though Haedrig's Gift isn't the new Typhon's Veil set, which boosts Hydras and stuff.  I figured I'd grind my way through to 70, then start collecting.

Got her to 70 (Winnie the Wizard), had a few Level 70 recipes I could use for some gear, but needed chest armor.  Had a handful of Blood Shards already from running Nephalem Rifts, so I hit up Kadala and Bang! Typhon's chest armor right off the bat.  The next worst item I had was shoulders.  You guessed it, I actually got Typhon's shoulders on the third try.  Two-piece bonus already without even trying.  Don't hate me because I'm beautiful.

So anyway, the Season is off to good start so far.  :)

Diablo (now with Diablo 4 Hype) / 1000 cows
« on: January 25, 2020, 07:16:42 PM »
As y'all know, I prefer to pretty much play the game "blind".  I read a little bit on Reddit sometimes, and between that and what I pick up here, I attempt to play the game.  So I'd heard that some kind of Super Diablo appears if/when you finally get the kill counter up to 1000.  I also heard that he can completely kick your ass, and has one-shot many characters.  Well, that doesn't actually sound like any fun, but I had to try it anyway.

I figured the best place to try to get a streak of 1000 kills was in Not The Cow Level, so I went for it.  Kinda cool, how he shows up.  Sorry, no screenies of that.  I was busy watching.  I got one quick screenie during the fight, spent a little time fighting him, then he wasted me with one shot.

Okay, he's resistant to all physical and elemental/magic/holy damage, and can one-shot kill you.  No, it wasn't fun.  After summoning him to satisfy my curiosity, then actually trying to fight him a few times, I gave up.

What was actually more fun was running around Not The Cow Level, clicking chests and dead farmers, then running back around to pick up my loot, all while trying to avoid Super Diablo.  He caught me a few times, but after running around and getting (I think) all my loot, I dashed back through the red portal, and called it even.  I wasn't gonna kill this guy.

Diablo (now with Diablo 4 Hype) / I think I broke my account
« on: October 27, 2019, 08:05:18 AM »
For reasons rational and otherwise, I become "attached" to my characters.  Once I've invested hundreds of hours into them, I actually care about them and can't just delete them casually.

But I came to the conclusion that while I'm proud of my Hardcore characters, I'm almost certainly never going to play them again.  I tend not to jump around between characters, because I get "into" my current character and really don't think about the others.  The times when I decided to play a different character just to change things up a bit usually starts with me dying a few times because I have to reacquaint myself with the skills and how to play the character.  This would be pretty bad in the case of Hardcore chararacter, and the fact that I "care" about these characters would make it worse.  So after at least two or three years of never touching any of them, I deleted all my Hardcore characters except one.  I kept my favorite Demon Hunter.

This cleared up a bunch of spots so I could start a new Seasonal character.  I know, there's Seasonal Rebirth, but I just wanted to start someone brand new.  I looked, and I still had 0 character slots remaining.  The Hardcore characters I'd just deleted weren't gone, they'd just moved to the top of the list.  What the fuck?

I backed out of the character selection menu and went back in.  There they all were.  0 characters slots remaining.  Some glitch, I figured.  They're deleted, but some part of the server where my Account info is stored hasn't been updated yet.  So I exited the Blizzard app completely, then went back in.

Connected... authenticating... error loading my characters.  What?

I tried again.  Went through the whole process, then choked when trying to find my characters.

I'll try again in a few.  This is annoying.

Diablo (now with Diablo 4 Hype) / Oh, now I get it!
« on: August 12, 2019, 12:06:34 PM »
On my way in to kill Diablo for a Bounty for the hundredth time or so, I glance down and I've got about 30 seconds of buff left and I'm hoping I'll still have some left by time I actually get to him.  It's so stupid, that whole "journey into darkness" they do to build up the excitement and tension.  Like that whole trip around the edge before you get to Cydaea's lair, or that extra passageway to get to Malthael.  It doesn't build tension; it's just annoying because it burns off whatever buffs you've still got going.  It's almost like...

... almost like they did it that way on purpose!

Desk: Apply directly to the forehead.

How did I not figure this out, not even think about it, before?

Diablo (now with Diablo 4 Hype) / Blind Rifts
« on: December 09, 2017, 11:21:33 PM »
Eventually it reaches the point where even Torment 13 isn't a big deal anymore, but you have to run regular Rifts to get GR tokens.  So... what to do to make them more interesting?  I came up with something kinda wacky that I've been doing lately.  I call them "Blind Rifts".

Open the obelisk and select a Nephalem Rift.

Before going in, hit Alt-Z to hide the User Interface.

Now enter the Rift.

Hmmm... Blood Marsh

Elites are not named, and you have no idea what their mods are unless you know the visual effects for them.

It occurred to me how much we depend on the UI to tell us what's what, and how much of that is actually unnecessary.

Shineys still have the glowing orange or green beam, and you still hear the sound.

Death's Breath has the distinctive teal color.  I always pick them up.  If you couldn't already, you quickly learn to tell pretty much any item that drops.

Another Shiney.  You start noticing lots more detail on screen.

I kinda like cruising around without a map.  No idea where anything is, just me, my skills, and the monsters.

Oh look, an exit!

Ah, the Plague Tunnels.

Sometimes it's hard to see what's going on, but you keep going.

I wonder where we'll end up next...

Stonefort.

I didn't get a good grab of the light show when the Rift Guardian appears.  But he's up to the right.  I just killed some yellow guy on the stairs to the left.

Ah-ha!  Ember!

Once the Rift Guardian is dead, it's okay to hit Alt-Z again to make sure you get all your loot.

I've been running all my Nephalem Rifts this way for about a week.  Eventually, I'm going to try some Greater Rifts this way.

It's an interesting exercise if nothing else, and I'm really enjoying it.  After so many Rifts, you know when your cooldowns expire almost by instinct.  You already have a good feel for how much resource you use, when to left-click, right-click, or use any of your other skills.  Without the UI, it's a much more immersive experience, and you have to keep your eyes and wits about you.

I tried a variation on this accidentally, by hitting Alt-Z and then Z, which Zooms in.  Very interesting!  Instead of seeing things several yards away, you're zoomed in and can only see a few yards around you.  Very challenging.  The only problem is when the scenery blocks your entire view.  But that's pretty fun, too.

Diablo (now with Diablo 4 Hype) / Diabolical Massacre!
« on: December 01, 2017, 07:42:07 PM »
You know how you kill so many monsters in a row and it's a Massacre, and if you keep going there are names like Brutal Massacre and Savage Massacre and others I forget.  Luther was in Not The Cow Level whirling through cows without end, and it got up to 200, 300, 400...

At 400 cows it was a Diabolical Massacre.  I watched when it got to 500, and there wasn't a new label, nor was there one at 600, or 700.  Finally ran out of cows at 760.

That's a personal record for me.  I'm curious as to what the highest is in our little group.  Anyone gotten over 1000 or something?  It seems like Not The Cow Level would be the place to do it, since it seems to have the largest area of high monster density, but what do I know?

And in case you're wondering (I know you're not, but just in case), Luther is a Whirlybarb of course, with Wrath of the Wastes, and the Bul-Kathos Swords, but they're transmogged.  I love the visual of mowing things down with Wirt's Leg and a Wooden Club.  :)

Diablo (now with Diablo 4 Hype) / View from the Royal Quarters
« on: November 18, 2017, 03:41:42 PM »
Luther and his entourage had just finished killing all the skeletons in the Royal Quarters and stepped out onto the balcony for some fresh air.  Beautiful view from up there.  You can even see the Tristram Cathedral, complete with the big hole in the roof where The Fallen Star hit.  I thought that that was a nice bit of detail, especially since this is content that was added later.

Diablo (now with Diablo 4 Hype) / Double Goblins!
« on: November 06, 2017, 12:19:38 PM »
I wasn't sure what they meant by double treasure goblins, but basically, they show up in pairs.  Where you might have a Gem Hoarder, there are two.  Or two Insufferable Miscreants, or two regular Treasure Goblins, etc.  I thought maybe they'd be twice as likely to show up or something like that, but this is cool, too.

Typical Blizzard half-assing it, though.  It always makes me chuckle, but inwardly weep.  You get two messages saying "<name> has engaged a Treasure Goblin" and no messages at all when you kill them.

Diablo (now with Diablo 4 Hype) / Account Atrophy
« on: October 20, 2017, 09:26:04 AM »
I usually play on Americas, but when it's down for maintenance on a Tuesday morning and I need my Diablo fix, I'll play on Europe instead.  Then I'll kinda get hooked on the new character I've started and play that one up to Level 70 and beyond.

One day long ago, I couldn't get to Americas or Europe for whatever reason, so I tried the Asia server.  Well, it's a server alright, with lots of empty character slots.  So I started a few characters, but haven't really played them in a while.  I decided to check on them the other day for some reason, and it was very weird.  I expected to be told all about the New Season that has started (since I haven't been on in like a year) but instead it went to the Character Selection screen.  I have two characters, so I picked my Level 70 female Crusader, Stacia.  She was currently set to Campaign, at Normal Difficulty.  That didn't sound right, but whatever, maybe I was trying something last time I played her.  I went to switch to Adventure Mode, and found it locked.

Weird.  I was pretty sure I'd run at least a few Rifts with her, but maybe not.  It's been a while.  So I started playing the Campaign at Torment I, and it was kinda fun.  Haven't played through the story line in a long time.  At some point, I decided to check her equipment, maybe enchant a few things, and I couldn't because I didn't have any Forgotten Souls.  Okay, now this is getting weird.  I checked and saw this:

Wow, that's the emptiest I've seen the Crafting Materials list in like, ever.  And this is after playing for a while, so I think I started with none.  But also notice, she's got Greater Rift keystones!  She's run Rifts before, which means she's played Adventure Mode.  The game seems to have "forgotten" all that.

But she and her trusty Templar, Kormac worked through the Cathedral and... wait... who's that guy they have?  The "Warrior"?  Yeah.  So we rescued him, and at that point she had both a Templar and the Warrior.

Very weird.  And later, after finding his stuff, he introduces himself, becomes the Templar... and now she has two Templars!

I don't remember the last time I've played through the Campaign, but I'm pretty sure you don't start with the Follower of your choice.  Maybe you do, but then you run into wacky scenes like this.  But I don't think I've ever played through the Campaign after playing Adventure Mode with a character, so maybe this is normal.  Seems pretty effed up to me.

Oh yeah, I didn't document it, but my Stash was all empty, too (:() except for one gem of each color.  One Ruby, one Diamond, etc., all "normal" quality.  That was the first thing I checked, and I didn't think much of it except that wow, I didn't have much stuff.  Now I'm sure I did, but it all evaporated over time.

Not sure how interesting this is to anyone (my threads don't seem to get much following) but I thought it was bizarre enough to share.
