So, gas attack in Syria. Use lots of words, condemn your predecessor, say "lines have been crossed" but you won't do anything about it.
Buck stops with you now.
Also Bannon out of the NSC is good.
-
It really won't be good until the angry orange troll is impeached.
Getting Bannon out of the NSC is a little like 'Well, now it's not -as- evil.'
-
Nunes is out as head of House Intelligence Committee. Seems like Trump cronies are getting out of positions of power, perhaps before some more damning evidence comes out? It'll be interesting to see.
-
Also Bannon out of the NSC is good.
He's still going to the meetings.
He's just no longer on the principals committee.
-
He is such an asshat.
Sorry but I think I mentioned that about 30 times in the last thread and I thought this thread was missing a dash of the obvious.
Bannon out is in theory good news. But Trump is King Dickus of Window Dressing. Meaning that the Bannon is still in the White House. He still has the ear of the president. And, as Syn notes, still attending the meetings. All of the this to say that I doubt anything has really changed.

Well, he decided to shoot about sixty cruise missiles at a Syrian airbase. That's almost as expensive as ten of his weekend golf trips. What a bargain.

Well, they are the good guys, the ones they bombed are the bad guys. How could it be more complex than that?

I was thinking the same thing this week. He was so outraged by the chemical attack on the babies, but he can't be bothered to let the babies come to our country as refugees. Asshat. ::)

I guess we really need to be careful that we don't bother poor Ivanka, or she will order an
air strike on your ass.
How the fuck is this shoe salesman getting access to classified military planning?? The fact that
you have clearance DOES NOT mean you have a need to know, that's basic security 101.
Don't get me started on the son in law.

or they'll call ahead to warn you it's going to happen (http://www.cnbc.com/2017/04/06/the-us-warned-the-russians-ahead-of-syria-missile-strikes-official.html) (russia would never tell syria what's about to happen, would they?),
or they'll simply fail to disable what they're shooting at (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/04/08/syrian-warplanes-take-air-base-bombed-us-tomahawks/).
otoh, their press secretary might say you're worse than hitler (https://www.nytimes.com/2017/04/11/us/politics/sean-spicer-hitler-gas-holocaust-center.html?_r=0), and that'll really sting.

So how many Americans will lose their insurance, or can't afford it anymore soon? Hopefully enough in the swing states for the 2018 bit, then the 2020 president election
-
So how many Americans will lose their insurance, or can't afford it anymore soon?
short answer, lots. CBO score is pending but the score on the previous iteration was something on the order of 10s of millions of people. probably a substantial underestimate based on what's been added on.
senate leadership announced that there're more or less starting from scratch (http://www.dailykos.com/stories/2017/5/4/1658999/-Senate-already-telling-House-thanks-but-no-thanks-on-Trumpcare), anyway. they also announced they're looking for 51 votes, so presumably they're looking to pass something through reconciliation. trump called on them to trash the filibuster if necessary, but mcconnell claims that's not going to happen. who knows if he backtracks on that.

per the NYT:
Mr. Comey was addressing a group of F.B.I. employees in Los Angeles when a television in the background flashed the news that he had been fired.
In response, Mr. Comey laughed, saying he thought it was a fairly funny prank.
Then his staff started scurrying around in the background and told Mr. Comey that he should step into a nearby office.
Mr. Comey stopped addressing the group. He proceeded to shake hands with the employees he had been speaking to. Then he stepped into a side office, where he confirmed that he had been fired. At that point, he had not heard from the White House.
Shortly thereafter, a letter from Mr. Trump was delivered to the F.B.I.’s headquarters, just seven blocks from the White House.
Mr. Comey’s day had begun in Florida, where he spoke to a group of police officers. He then flew to Los Angeles, where he was also scheduled to speak at a diversity meeting.

Comey Memo Says Trump Asked Him to End Flynn Investigation (https://www.nytimes.com/2017/05/16/us/politics/james-comey-trump-flynn-russia-investigation.html?hp&action=click&pgtype=Homepage&clickSource=story-heading&module=span-ab-top-region®ion=top-news&WT.nav=top-news).
Mr. Comey wrote the memo detailing his conversation with the president immediately after the meeting, which took place the day after Mr. Flynn resigned, according to two people who read the memo. It was part of a paper trail Mr. Comey created documenting what he perceived as the president’s improper efforts to influence a continuing investigation. An F.B.I. agent’s contemporaneous notes are widely held up in court as credible evidence of conversations.
Mr. Comey shared the existence of the memo with senior F.B.I. officials and close associates. The New York Times has not viewed a copy of the memo, which is unclassified, but one of Mr. Comey’s associates read parts of it to a Times reporter.
“I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go,” Mr. Trump told Mr. Comey, according to the memo. “He is a good guy. I hope you can let this go.”
Mr. Trump told Mr. Comey that Mr. Flynn had done nothing wrong, according to the memo.
Mr. Comey did not say anything to Mr. Trump about curtailing the investigation, only replying: “I agree he is a good guy.”
In a statement, the White House denied the version of events in the memo.
“While the president has repeatedly expressed his view that General Flynn is a decent man who served and protected our country, the president has never asked Mr. Comey or anyone else to end any investigation, including any investigation involving General Flynn,” the statement said. “The president has the utmost respect for our law enforcement agencies, and all investigations. This is not a truthful or accurate portrayal of the conversation between the president and Mr. Comey.”
-
Turns out he also asked Comey to imprison journalists. Trump is like a whole century's worth of scandals in a single day.

It must upset him that Maduro is better at going full dictator while Trump still has checks and balances to slow him down.

it's optional if you don't mind going to jail. depends on whether senator burr is serious or not. betting that if burr isn't serious (who wants some easy money?), mueller will be.

"I just fired the head of the F.B.I. He was crazy, a real nut job," Trump told the Russian foreign minister and U.S. ambassador on May 10 during an Oval Office meeting, according to a transcript of the meeting read to The Times by a U.S. official. "I faced great pressure because of Russia. That's taken off."
White House press secretary Sean Spicer did not dispute the account of the conversation to The Times and, in a statement to NPR, argued that the Russia investigation was harming U.S. foreign policy.

To be fair, seeing this make the news, and at a much louder volume than almost any real issue, is a major part of the problem. Lunatic way to prioritize information and get diverted from actual, important topics.

On Wednesday afternoon, Trump told Reuters that “No. That I didn’t know. Until a couple of days ago, when I heard about this. No I didn’t know about that,” referring to the meeting between Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya and Donald Trump Jr., Jared Kushner and Paul Manafort.
Trump changed his tune later in the day, when he told reporters on Air Force One: “In fact maybe it was mentioned at some point,” referring to the meeting. (Reporters on the plane initially thought the conversation was off-the-record, but the President said otherwise on Thursday.)

The latest rubbish about banning trans people in the military won't do much help for him. The people who will be happy would have voted for him anyway. Its not going to get people to forget about the Russia business, or that his namesake is in big shit.
-
no, but it distracts from the fact that the senate is 0-3 in voting for possible repeals of the ACA the past couple days.
1. repeal and replace with mcconnell's plan? nope, that plan sucks.
2. repeal and replace (with magical fairy dust 2 years from now)? not gonna happen.
3. repeal and don't replace with anything? nope, we don't like that either.
-
i'm glad to hear they can't pass that. They are turning a kidney stone into a basketball :D
-
best question from today's press conference:
"Was the president aware that he can't make policy changes via statements on Twitter?"
in the meantime:
In a letter to the military service chiefs, Gen. Joseph Dunford, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said that the policy on who is allowed to serve will not change until the White House sends the Defense Department a rules change and the secretary of defense issues new guidelines.
-
and re the ACA repeal, the senate parliamentarian ruled that the next option (the "skinny repeal") doesn't qualify for reconciliation. so, it needs 60 to pass rather than 50, and it was a longshot to get to 50.
lulz

Yeah, but RE: Dunford's statement - all he means is "we can't act on a tweet, but sure as hell as soon as this comes down to the Sec/Defense in writing, we'll be right on top of this, boys! Full speed oppression ahead!"

perhaps. apparently mattis was not happy with the tweets.

The end of Bannon wouldn't be a bad thing. I'm guessing by the end of term the staff will be made up of Trump family. At least those not in jail ;)

huh, thought i saw that they needed 60 for the last repeal attempt but apparently that wasn't the case. regardless, it didn't get enough votes. mcconnell has a sad.
-
McCain stunned them with the "No" vote to kill the last bill version. People will applaud him, but he shouldn't have voted "Yes" to begin debate a couple days ago in the first place. Especially after he made that speech about getting back to normal order and all that. The entire process of this bill was anything but normal order, and he voted to begin debate anyway.

I find this pretty amusing. Sad...but amusing.

What bugs me is all the focus on McCain as the "hero" of defeating this. I think far, far more accolades should go to Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski who said all along exactly where they stood and never wavered.

Priebus has been voted off the island. new CoS is John Kelly.

thought this was an interesting and plausible take on what happened:
t's important to note the 49-3 vote by the Senate Republicans is not a true indicator of who wanted to vote for or against the "skinny" healthcare repeal bill. Way more than 3 didn't want to vote on the bill at all and sure as hell didn't want it to pass, at least not with their names on it.
So McCain stepped in to join the two women [who] were stalwart NOs and be the fall guy so others in the party could be seen voting YES on a bill they never wanted to pass anyway. The disaster of a bill doesn't become law with their YES vote on it and they can point to the YES vote on the failed bill and say, "We tried" to the crazy, granny starving wingnut base.
McCain got to play the mavericky hero he always wanted to be and got to stick his thumb in Trump's eye as payback for Trump insulting him in the Primary.
-
Wow. How long til Trump has to fire this guy? Is he there already on the strength of that article?
apparently the answer to that is yes. kelly fired him today. but don't worry, DJT tweeted "No WH chaos!"

And now Trump's transgender military ban is in writing and should be headed to Mattis shortly.
http://www.losangelesblade.com/2017/08/04/trumps-trans-military-ban-now-policy/
President Donald Trump may be on a 17- day vacation but his White House has been scrambling to hand him a “win” by the time he returns. Trump’s tweets last week announcing a ban on transgender individuals serving openly in the U.S. military was turned into a “guidance” policy for implementation that passed muster with the White House Counsel’s office Friday night. Approved by Trump, the new policy is expected to be now delivered into the hands of Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, who has been quiet on the issue with approximately 15,000 trans servicemembers under his command.
After his review, Mattis is expected to order a deliberate implementation by the Pentagon, which could take a period of time.
Though the policy—called “A Guidance Policy for Open Transgender Service Phase Out”—has not yet been made public, sources familiar with the planning said it would encourage early retirement, usher out any enlisted personnel after their contract is up, and would fire trans officers up for promotion. Basically, said a source, “the administration want to get rid of transgender servicemembers as fast as they can.”
No one yet knows what will happen to the servicemembers currently fighting in combat. The new policy does allow trans servicemembers to continue serving but apparently does not offer any protection from harassment or other efforts to get them to quit.
Fuck Trump. Just fuck this guy.
Interestingly, Mattis today issued a memorandum to all DoD personnel about ethics.
https://twitter.com/AaronMehta/status/893614050927562752/photo/1?
It... almost... reads like Mattis may be prepared to ignore the order. Seems unlikely as fuck, but maybe? I mean, one is expected to disobey unethical or unlawful orders...

How does a state that elects Angus King and Susan Collins keep electing that guy?
Both times he's won it was a 3-way race against a democrat and an independent, so he's never won 50% of the vote. That said, Maine has a large redneck conservative population so, yeah.
Luckily, thanks to term limits, he's done next year. Of course, he's spewing crap about running for senate, but I don't think he could take Collins or King.

isn't collins planning on running for governor? though i doubt lepage could win a race for an open senate seat, unless he lucked into another 3 way.
edit: from what i just read, if collins ran for governor and won, lepage would get to appoint a replacement (potentially himself) to serve the remaining 2 years of her senate term.

I have heard mention of her running for gov, but I *think* she has nixed that?

Did anyone else see the photo of Trump staring at the Eclipse with no eye protection (later in the same article saw one with him wearing some eye protection.
still lolz

Ehhh.... watch the video. He glances up for like 2 seconds (tops), kind of jokingly.
This one is just a chance for people to go "lol stupid"... which is annoying because there's already plenty of real reasons to call him stupid and making up new ones just obfuscates things.

I'm sure he'll get plenty stupid tonight at his rally in Arizona.

It is tough to imagine that the crazy could become worse than it has been, but the last two weeks have been off the chart. From Charlottesville and his racist ramblings, to the new 'strategy' (bring back mini-skirts) in Afghanistan, to his, literally, insane speech last night.
I had incredibly low expectations of his presidency, but this is worse than anything I imagined.

Whenever the Vice President and a majority of either the principal officers of the executive departments or of such other body as Congress may by law provide, transmit to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives their written declaration that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, the Vice President shall immediately assume the powers and duties of the office as Acting President.
Thereafter, when the President transmits to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives his written declaration that no inability exists, he shall resume the powers and duties of his office unless the Vice President and a majority of either the principal officers of the executive department or of such other body as Congress may by law provide, transmit within four days to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives their written declaration that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office. Thereupon Congress shall decide the issue, assembling within forty-eight hours for that purpose if not in session. If the Congress, within twenty-one days after receipt of the latter written declaration, or, if Congress is not in session, within twenty-one days after Congress is required to assemble, determines by two-thirds vote of both Houses that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, the Vice President shall continue to discharge the same as Acting President; otherwise, the President shall resume the powers and duties of his office.

Fun, wishful thinking. Right along with this similar prediction (http://www.newsweek.com/trump-going-resign-soon-president-art-deal-ghostwriter-predicts-651873).
His ego is way too big to quit.

was on a family vacation a few weeks ago; one of my brothers-in-law (a health insurance exec in PA) is convinced that trump will be re-elected by a substantial margin. i think my BIL's letting his cynicism get the better of him, because i don't see how trump keeps this up, but i can't believe he was elected in the first place, so what do i know. the only good news about trump so far is that we haven't started a new war. also don't think he will resign. he'll be dragged out, kicking and screaming.
-
Hopefully when it comes to your next election there won't be any wall, or the start of it. No healthcare repeal/reform, basically no major wins. Just a series of rants and more people quitting. This assumes it doesn't blow up before then.
-
Ammendment XXV Section 4 of the US Consitution
I'm not sure that while Trump is conscious and able to speak that using the provisions in this amendment would work (and it would be a massive risk to try it without being certain). The "powers and duties of his office" aren't really defined and Trump could argue that he has been attempting to do what he was elected to do. The best way to get rid of him is surely impeachment.
-
I mentioned it because it is being widely talked about. While the short term implications make sense it is not good from a long term POV.

brought up violent crime in Chicago, a frequent talking point for the administration for a variety of issues. Trump has infamously threatened to send in federal agents to subdue the city.

Yeah...that was a stupid thing to say and believe.
I wish Trump was at that level of stupid.
It is such a shit show here. I knew Trump would be a disaster. I am not sure I expected it to be this level of bad. Which is pretty incredible since I had really, really, really low expectations for Trump.
What I did not expect was for this administration to fundamentally attack the US Constitution the way it has. I am genuinely becoming worried that I am watching the beginnings of the Constitution being broken down.
-
Remember this one: I hire the best people.
SAD!

What I did not expect was for this administration to fundamentally attack the US Constitution the way it has. I am genuinely becoming worried that I am watching the beginnings of the Constitution being broken down.
I would say "we are" but then I remind myself that the Constitution is a sturdy ol' lass and the US has been through some pretty trying times over the last 2.5 centuries and generally comes out okay in the end.
-
wouldn't it be nice if certain amendments weren't so sturdy and could be ripped off and melted in a volcano to never be seen again.
-
Ummm... no?
-
its been discussed before, but if the 2nd amendment was .. changed, and a culture change, then you could be like the rest of the world. Just because something gets written down doesn't mean it will always be 100% right forever.
eg, what if they got an amendment in in the early 2000s that marriage is only between a man and a women for example.
-
There are provisions for changing the US Constitution. Should it be easy? No. If it were then someone like Trump would have long ago ripped the document apart. The US Constitution is a thing of beauty. Flawed? Sure; but it is rightfully held up as a blueprint for how to build a government.
I personally think it is one of the most important documents in human history. It is at the core of what I consider to be the United States Ethos. Sadly there are many who want to undo many of the provisions. Trump has been on the attack against the constitution from day one. His most obvious conflict with the document comes down to the Emoluments Clause. Aside from that he has been attacking freedom of the press and speech. He attacks our Court system. I could go on and on sadly.
I personally believe that the Second Amendment is being twisted and misinterpreted. I personally believe it should be repelled. That said, I do not believe it should be easy to do.

totally predictable response by trump to stevens' op-ed the other day (wrt to repealing the 2nd amendment). pretty sure stevens has said similar things in the past. i agree with him, but statements like that seem to unify opposition more than anything else. otoh, since nothing significant's getting done or is even likely to get done anyway, maybe promoting repeal as an idea not outside the mainstream isn't so bad... who knows.
edit: btw, yesterday standing was recognized for the plaintiffs in one of the lawsuits against trump wrt his emolument violations. (https://www.cnn.com/2018/03/28/politics/emoluments-lawsuit-trump-hotel/index.html) this was the hurdle for the previous cases.

trump said a couple amusing things on fox & friends this morning:
1. cohen did in fact represent trump wrt the stormy daniels NDA (what, you mean trump lied when he said there was no stormy daniels deal? shocking), and
2. cohen only represented trump with regard to a very small number of issues.
that doesn't help cohen's claim (which probably would have failed anyway) that stuff seized in the raids is protected under attorney-client privilege.
this, the day after cohen pled the 5th in his civil suit. something "only the mob does", per DJT during the campaign. oh schadenfreude...

LOL!

ton of backlash on his comments at the presser. former CIA director brennan called it treasonous, former RNC chairman steele called it "what happens when an asset meets with his handler", former republican governor/bush cabinet member whitman called on trump to resign. of course, no one with any power to actually do something is willing to do anything or say anything beyond the meekest of rebukes.
trump today said "he misspoke", when talking about why he would or wouldn't think russia was involved in election tampering, but he wouldn't answer when asked if he would condemn russian interference in the election.
"Oops, did I say WOULD? I meant wouldN'T.

I don't really have any great hope here and if anything, 2016 showed how divided the left in the US is. It is far far easier for the far right to rally around a candidate, especially when they just go mindlessly for soundbites over substance.
Rallying the political left behind a single candidate, especially when Bernie demonstrate both how "big" and divided the political "left" was, is going to be a huge challenge. Regardless that Hilary lost because of the failings of the EC, it seems pretty clear that the left won't, on principle, all rally behind a candidate just to defeat abhorrent opposition. I've not seen any signs this side of the pond that the Dems have learned any lessons from 2016 or have plans to appeal to the voters, especially younger voters, who Bernie appealed to.
I don't think a "project fear" vote for X candidate or we'll get Trump, is going to cut it.
At present, I fully expect Trump will get four more years.
-

These are my thoughts exactly.
-
it took a perfect storm to elect trump the first time. that's unlikely to be repeated.
-
it took a perfect storm to elect trump the first time. that's unlikely to be repeated.
And what was that perfect storm exactly? I don't see anything remarkable about the circumstances under which Trump was elected.
1 - He's going to run again unless he's impeached.
2 - I don't know enough about the EC to say whether what occurred last time would be replicated.
3 - Even if it wasn't, Trump stands a better chance of unifying the right than the left does of getting its act together.
-
It's way too early to call it. We need to shake the candidate tree and see who pops out (personally, I'm hoping for a President Cory Booker). I do know that I don't want Sanders or Warren or Biden to run. They're too damn old and we need a younger, fresher face. I *do* fear a pull to hard left (a la Ocasio-Cortez) even though I'm personally very far left... because I worry about the likelihood of losing the middle.
Anyway, a big field of candidates would be a good start and I'm going to remain optimistic that Trump is done by January 2021 at the latest. Optimism is all I have and I'm not giving it up yet. I hear waaaay too much doom and gloom and despair from my Democratic friends and that's no way to win. Certainly no way to live.
-
It's way too early to call it. We need to shake the candidate tree and see who pops out (personally, I'm hoping for a President Cory Booker).
Is it too early to call it? I don't know enough about US politics to say if any contenders are emerging on the left but, from this side of the pond there don't appear to be any credible candidates at this point and given the circumstances, this is worrying. My perception of US politics is that the approach of candidates tumbling out of the bag the year before the election leaves a lot of the electorate asking "who is this person?" but, that's a fault of the process rather than people.
I do know that I don't want Sanders or Warren or Biden to run. They're too damn old and we need a younger, fresher face. I *do* fear a pull to hard left (a la Ocasio-Cortez) even though I'm personally very far left... because I worry about the likelihood of losing the middle.
Sanders did an amazing job of energising the youth vote in the US. So whilst I see where you are coming from, I'm not sure a younger person is the key factor. That said, someone comfortably under 50 who a broad section of the populace can identify with wouldn't hurt. I'm not sure getting someone under 40 is terribly realistic for modern politics but, its a dream I have for the UK as well.
-
It is much too early to call it. I don't discount the awful possibility of another four years of Trump but the idea the is it a forgone conclusion is ridiculous in the extreme. A lot of people thought the election process in the US couldn't be influenced because it is so decentralized. But the combination of the electoral college and gerrymandering made it possible. All it takes it is influencing the result in key areas to get the desired result. Can it happen again; sure. Another big factor in why Trump might win is that the Democratic party is poorly organized as compared to the Republicans. Like Pixie I would rather see a new face, and there are a few out there. Some factors against it happening again are that he won't win Michigan. That was a somewhat surprising flip in Trump's favor and all that he has done since has hurt the Unions. Also his numbers since being elected have been extremely poor; he has held his base but lost the middle. I have read that for a sitting presidency he negatively compares to Carter in terms of his polling numbers. His trade wars have pissed off Wall Street. His scandal ridden presidency will also play a factor. He also won't face a candidate like Hillary in the next election. As competent as she was, at least in my eyes, she galvanized the right like few other candidates could.
I could probably dig up more potential factors, but the upshot is that I think it is unlikely he will win again. Call it improbable but not impossible.
-
As competent as she was, at least in my eyes, she galvanized the right like few other candidates could.
Eloquently and succinctly put.

other fun news, duncan hunter, vocal R representative from CA, was indicted yesterday for massive misuse of campaign funds and general douchebaggery. overshadowed (understandably) by the cohen and manafort stuff. anyway, too late to replace hunter on the ballot in an otherwise safe red seat.
"trump derangement syndrome" is typically a smear against people that hate trump, not those who support him. "bush derangement syndrome" was something coined during the bush years as a way to dismiss any criticism of the pres at that time, and then we got to enjoy the same phrase wrt obama and now trump.

Of course, it's all a wash anyway... he'll be confirmed because there's not a republican in the senate with any spine.

His little tantrum speech was just terrifying.

I hope he is not confirmed. He raged out and got super political yesterday. He even brought up the Clintons in his blame-fest...Amazing! This man cannot be on the supreme court or it will be tainted for the next 30 years. It's already tainted having that turd Clarence Thomas on it, but 2 creepy turds on the court at the same time is too much.
I do feel bad for his family, but not him.

He is 100% getting confirmed. Nothing was ever going to change that.
-
Pixie, your senator Collins needs to vote against him!

Yeah, I'm aware. There's been a lot of activity on that front here. Like, there's a group that's raised a shitload of money that will be donated to whoever her next opponent is if she votes to confirm.
But, she's gonna go with the party line. Like always.
And even if she doesn't, that still would make it 50-50 and Pence would get the tie-breaking vote.
That's even assuming Manchin doesn't vote to confirm, which he probably will.

Yes, I saw that ad. It's just disgusting, full of lies.

I'm hoping that it actually has the opposite effect of galvanizing people to realize what racist he is. It is just so blatant. Of course if you haven't figured out he is racist by now, maybe you never will.

Maybe the caravan just wants to head to Canada for legal weed?

nah, they're coming for rural minnesotans' summer/lake cabins (http://www.citypages.com/news/migrant-gangs-coming-for-our-lake-homes-minnesota-retiree-warns-nation/498309331). granted, that's almost to canada.
She (Shields) warned the New York Times that the migrants, now 2,000 miles from the U.S. border, could reach Texas and simply keep walking, all the way to Minnesota woods country, where they would take over lake homes and cabins – after they got done taking our jobs and our crime, of course.
“What’s to stop them?” asked Shields. “We have a lot of people who live on lakes in the summer and winter someplace else. When they come back in the spring, their house would be occupied.”
But since the migrants are on foot, and will no doubt have to stop for bathroom breaks, the Great Lake Home Threat isn’t expected to gain immediacy until sometime next year, and possibly later, depending upon how their shoes hold up.

Nothing new today, though. Everything Cohen said was just stuff we already knew.
There were some good exchanges, though. I really appreciate the response to being called a pathological liar. "Are you talking about the president or me?"

Someone is going after Trump for taxes.
I wonder if there are any other nuggets like this in yesterday's hearing.
-
I think they will have to call Wieselberg (?) and Don Jr (idiot child) in for testimony. Some of this stuff may already be under investigation by the Southern District of NY too.
-
Still nothing new. All stuff we already knew. And yes, SDNY has been investigating Trump & Friends for a while, including the $400m tax fraud they committed getting Fred Trump's money passed down...
But at least we're starting to see some of this stuff be exposed to prime time viewers who haven't been paying attention, so there's that.
I am still hanging on to the hope/expectation that we see indictments for Jared and Donnie Jr in the not-distant future. I'd love to see Ivanka and Eric charged, too, but that might be hoping for way too much...

No indictments were ever made against Kushner or Don Jr, for one thing. No indictments coming. No sealed indictments unopened. Is done.
Trump walks away, and all hope at this point is that he gets voted out in 2020 and SDNY is waiting there to charge him with financial crimes.

Trump doesn't care about the NBA for obvious reasons.

Because the ball reminds him of his own orange dome? ;)

Its one more ball than he has

So The moon is a part of Mars .. If only he had played Doom, then he would have known about Phobos and Deimos. :P

Driving through the UP of michigan, passed a billboard for a strip club called “the Oval Office”, complete with a presidential seal. Thanks, trump.

So, sounds like sharemarkets and economies around the world are showing another recession coming .. good timing with next election coming up!

maybe they want to build all those cages off the mainland. Out of sight, out of mind?

Perhaps he should first figure out how to better deal with our freely associated states instead of trying to acquire new ones.
What a scrotum.
-
well, the new york times says trump was thinking about trading puerto rico for greenland.
might've been a step up for PR.
-
What a scrotum.
I disagree. The scrotum is useful.
How about cyst? It doesn't have the same visceral sound as scrotum or the ever pleasing short form scrot, but it is more fundamentally accurate.

He's so dumb. Every week, almost every day, there is something new validating how stupid he is. I'm numb to it all at this point. I just want him to be gone next November. I don't care how it happens, I just want him gone.
-
All the people who love every single thing he does .. defend anything because he is the best is almost more draining. One way or the other his presidency will end and mortality will silence him. Its the fan club I worry about for the future. Whoever goes next will have to deal with that crap and "false news" whatever happened to saying its lies, or just "this truth doesn't match my spin"

It's just so much better.

They impeached the motherfucker! He then proceeds to speak horribly about a dead politician from Michigan. What a guy.
-
We all know whats coming next. But I heard that being impeached at least means he is unable to be pardoned later, so that is something. I'm guessing this like everything else will just be polarising people more. it will be interesting how much it gets people to vote next time
-
Article II, Section 2 (which establishes the presidential pardon privilege) states that “The President … shall have power to grant reprieves and pardons for offences against the United States, except in cases of impeachment.”
I believe this is only necessary if the senate also convicts.
-
Yes, being impeached means he can't be pardoned later for his crimes.

lot of controversy about that.

I don't think he can even think that far out. I'd wager it's more of a way to distract from the immediate: the impeachment trial.

An interesting article from 2013 about Qasem Soleimani: https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2013/09/30/the-shadow-commander

So Trump is in India, mispronounces the name of their greatest living sportsman who has many records no other cricketer has gotten close to. https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/cricket/119774993/sachin-tendulkars-name-leaves-donald-trump-stumped-during-india-visit
The name isn't even tricky to say compared to some foreign names.

To be fair to the orange buffoon... cricket isn't a real sport anyway. :P
-
I saw some clips. He seems well received. Any chance India can keep him?
All politicians screw up things like that. The thing that is different with Trump is that it is a daily occurrence. It shows a lack of intelligence, in that he is willfully ignorant. It just shows a lack of willingness to prepare, and proves he is slothful. There is not any level at which he does not disgust me.

Imagine if the corona virus loses Trump + Pence the election, not all the stuff they have said and done. As many have said, the "healthcare" plus workplace leave system doesn't really let most people say "hey, let me go quarantine myself for 2 weeks"
I hear Pence has been put in charge of it, they talk about how in Indiana AIDs took off based on what he did wrong. They have sacked a whole bunch of experts and people who know how to stop it/contain it.
I hear about cases popping up, where no one can track back movements to a previous area of infection.
Could this be the perfect storm to move enough swing voters? Especially if it takes a toll and is in recent memory come voting time. Its possible there could be a few waves of the virus

you might know more already, but I was watching a video about the 1918 flu, how it got the name Spanish flu, mainly because Spain wasn't in the war, they weren't censoring their media and the Spanish king got it. Meanwhile thousands of others have caught it, many dying, but they didn't want to get in the way of the war so just hid the news

Holy Fuck.

most people don't even know they're sick, doncha know. :o
i'm still in awe of his asking the CEO of regeneron and the director of NIAID if the flu vaccine would work for coronavirus. he seemed so proud of himself for asking an insightful question, too...
-
When it gets bad he's just going to blame it on the dems and immigration. The religious right will believe it's a plague from God to punish the sinners in the democratic party for abortion and homosexuality. I'm afraid the worse it gets, the more he'll make it work for his re-election bid.

I have given up trying to guess how that base is going to react to certain things.

I just watched the white house cornona virus briefing and Trump had a meltdown. He thinks he's King Trump now. Hell, I know he thought it before, but now he basically is saying it. He also went all Goebbels on us by playing a propaganda video at the start. I am so sick of him.

Trump and the Republicans keep managing to go lower and lower.
-
from the NYT regarding tonight's rally:
A few hours before the event, the campaign disclosed that six Trump campaign staff members who had been working on the rally had tested positive for the coronavirus during a routine screening. Mr. Trump, who was made aware of the sick campaign aides before departing for the rally, was incensed that the news was made public, according to two people familiar with his reaction.
re the rally, mike osterholm (epidemiologist at the U of MN) said "I wouldn't go if all four Beatles were coming".

I watched some of it. He was unhinged. And the crowds? As small as his hands.

There is this idea floating out there that Trump voters are more enthusiastic to vote for Trump than Biden voters are for Biden. That this will provide Trump an advantage.
This article (https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/why-trump-not-biden-might-have-an-enthusiasm-problem/) debunks that idea. Interesting read and also a small insight on why Clinton shouldn't have been the candidate in 2016.

She is pretty brilliant. I have seen a couple of her takes on Trump.
He is so freakin' proud of the cognitive test it is pathetic. In the interview with Wallace again Trump was talking about the test and Wallace said he took it and it asked him to identify a picture of an elephant. This is hysterical except for the fact that we are talking about the President of the US.

President Trump: “You can’t do that.”
Swan: “Why can’t I do that?”

He is such a shit-burger.

Trump cuts US postal service to hamper the next election (https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-08-14/donald-trump-hampers-us-postal-service-2020-election-coronavirus/12554960?fbclid=IwAR3TD6NiSUwpzZfHAE2sD4k-I3t9WApryuUtM-Cb_xUzPRNAxLBrUHLu-6A)
Today, in an interview on Fox Business, Trump explicitly stated why he doesn't want it to happen.
"Now they need that money in order to make the post office work, so it can take all of these millions and millions of ballots," he said.
"But if they don't get those two items, that means you can't have universal mail-in voting, because they're not equipped to have it."
In other words, he knows the post office won't "work" effectively during the election without an injection of funds.
"The President is sabotaging a basic service that hundreds of millions of people rely upon… because he wants to deprive Americans of their fundamental right to vote safely," said Andrew Bates, a spokesman for Presidential challenger Joe Biden.

this appears to have backfired. not for lack of trying, though.

There is talk of the Post Office suspending their efforts until after the election. Suspending? What does that mean. Are going to put the sorting machines, that have already been taken out, back in service? The devil is in the details.

Did you see Trump's (aka president dipshit as accurately stated by syn) comments on New Zealand's new cases? They had something like 13 new cases and president dipshit was saying it's terrible. Dipshit didn't didn't mention our 40k new cases daily though.

To me it seems that Trump is just reinforcing the imagine that he is a complete asshole.
My main goal for this debate was for Biden to not look senile.
-
No one's talking about Biden. He had some good moments but primarily benefited just from the contrast with the pres. lots of people talking about cancelling the rest of the debates. my first instinct is that's a mistake, that trump hurt himself much more than he helped himself. but i also thought clinton crushed trump in the debates in 2016, so... ???

or there's this interpretation:
Commentators are, I think, missing the clear import of Conley's statement. The reference to being "upbeat" and not "steering" the disease makes it sound like they're not holding back information to avoid scaring the public but to avoid scaring the President.

voted this afternoon. early voting in Minnesota is basically a walk-in absentee vote, starting about a month and a half before election day and available until the day before. figured about half way through that period that it'd be a short line (or no line) like it has been in the past, but i was wrong. about a half an hour wait in line. not unhappy about that.

So what does everyone think about the bullshit from the top down, a mixture of denying reality, the lawsuits hope, the just sowing doubt which some will hold onto for years, and then the blantant "planning for his 2nd term" as if he has won in a landslide. i'm a mixture of tired, annoyed and a bit scared at the same time.
-
What the republicans are doing is just so damaging. Almost all of them are complicit. Makes me angry.
-
line on the radio this morning: "more foreign leaders have congratulated Biden than members of the republican party".
i've seen a couple comments that seem relevant: 1) virtually all of trump's current lawsuits would be insufficient to change the outcome even if he won everything (and he won't), and 2) he's pushing fundraising to support his challenge, but almost none of that money is going to support that (most of it's going to retire campaign debt, and the rest into a new leadership PAC).
so basically, one last fundraising scam.
unrelated point is that repubs think this helps their senate candidates in GA. keeps voters engaged and angry, i suppose. that could obviously cut both ways.
edit: regarding GA, polling (lol) seems to show Warnock in a strong position. Ossoff is behind, but maybe coattails from Warnock will help.

Totally agree with this. I used to think Bush was the worst thing ever.

Not counting Trump, Bush still probably doesn't rank as worst ever. Worst in recent memory, sure. Bush is probably topped on the "worst" list by Warren Harding, Andrew Johnson, and James Buchanan. YMMV.
Definitely in "worst 5" territory, however! :D

“Senator Mitch McConnell, the Republican leader, has told associates that he believes President Trump committed impeachable offenses and that he is pleased that Democrats are moving to impeach him, believing that it will make it easier to purge him from the party, according to people familiar with his thinking. Crazy times. And the extreme right is trying to blame the left for the violence. Pretty tough sell, but there are millions buying trash these days.
And why are they upset with Antifa? It's anti fascism, isn't it? Isn't fascism a bad thing, Hitler and those guys? Or is the name a cover for extreme left wing activities? I can't believe how far they pushed Trump's brand of populism. Isn't he a fascist himself? He's certainly acting like it, calling into question the election results, refusing to admit he lost?
