I might also mention that one of the love interests in Persona 5 is super smart, perceptive, friendly to everyone, uses martial arts, wears spiky Biker gear, rides a nuclear motorcycle that becomes a Transformer, has an ability called "Shadow Calculus", and asks you to take her to an arcade as a first date.  I mean, holy f***ing sh**.  8)  As she wants to become a police commissioner, and you sneak around in a mask and black cape, she's Barbara Gordon to your Batman.

Just finished up Persona 5 last night.  Quite a ride.

Good:
Art Style - I'm not a huge fan of anime art in general, but the details they put into a lot of the characters and monsters make it clear they put a LOT of work into it.  Since the characters are "Phantom Thieves" it makes sense for their garb and animations to be flashy as hell.
UI - Every menu is meticulously crafted with custom art, and many of the stores have their own special music and animations.
Soundtrack - Mostly Jazz, R&B, with some Rock for boss battles, but the way they are used is what is excellent.
Tone - The game's primary theme of breaking chains/reforming society/helping others stays consistent throughout the story and is enhanced by the music, art style and transitions.

Bad:
Time Constraints - A little too strict, especially when 30-70% of your "days until deadline" are completely taking up by cutscenes that shouldn't logically take all day like they do.  There's a part of the story where you are no longer in school yet you still get the same amount of time per day to do things (basically you sleep until school would be out for no reason).
Final Area/Boss - As cliche as it gets for JRPGs lately. 
Mixed Character Development - Your party members are slowly introduced throughout the story, and thus you are extremely limited on time with some of the later ones to learn their personal stories.  Other than talking about the missions at hand, there are very few lines between your confidants with each other to add more depth to their relationships (as in many RPGs you are the "hub").
Dungeons - There are 2 types, ones that is randomly generated, and ones that are specially crafted.  Both are repetitive to a frustrating degree, though at least the crafted ones give you special set pieces and environmental puzzles.

Picked up Persona 5 last week.  Pretty fun art-style, decent story, but it's wrapped up in one of the most grindy/linear JRPGs even compared to other JRPGs.  Roughly halfway done and I'm at 60 hours played (I've done little else this week).

So curious then, what would you have wanted Episode 8 to be? or what changes?

I didn't have any specific things I "absolutely had to see" in the film.  I think Ep.7 and the first half of this film set up things to be interesting, but it intentionally avoids any significant risks. 

The Kylo and Rey conversations set up their relationship fairly well, and I could have believed any major change they did with them.  Rey could've turned Kylo, Kylo could've turned Rey, they could've become kind of an odd couple duo without really changing their allegiance, they could've run off together to elope and disappear from the story, whatever.  Instead, they don't change whatsoever.  This is ultimately why Snoke's death sucks.  Whatever you think about the theories about Snoke, THIS MOVIE sets up Snoke as an interesting badass, by itself, and then squashes that.  He's less interesting than Kylo as the pure force of evil, but he's a good source of conflict.  Snoke is now dead, and Kylo is now Snoke, so you've killed off one character while making another less interesting.  Kylo using Rey's parentage to turn her to the dark side would've made sense too (whether it was a lie or not), but sadly they're setting them up to be the eternal good-versus-evil struggle so they can make infinity more movies. 

The only death in the movie that has any meaning whatsoever was Rose's sister, since that is her motivation for her actions.  Ackbar dies and it's a throwaway line.  Phasma dies and no one cares (she's the new Boba Fett).  Luke dies but Rey and Leia are totally ok with it, plus it doesn't matter anyway because Force Ghosts (that can now affect the universe normally as per Yoda).  Leia DOESN'T die which would've been a dramatic moment for many characters (Kylo, Luke, Poe, all of the Resistance).  Finn DOESN'T die which would've also been dramatic and been "the spark" for the Resistance.  In every case, this movie chooses the least interesting option.  This is what I meant by this being a Troll film.  This movie does not take ENOUGH risks (I'm being completely consistent with my problems with Ep. 7), but dangles the possibilities in front of us just to piss us off.

The humor as a whole is terrible.  The Poe/Hux conversation at the beginning belittles Hux in a way that makes us not fear the First Order whatsoever.  "Chrome Dome" and "Yeah, Rebel Scum" do the same to Phasma.  Humor has its place in Star Wars, but not to kill the tension in battle scenes.  They had no clue how to separate the serious bits from the humor.  The milking scene was awkward, Finn in the bacta suit was meh, though I did chuckle at Luke teasing Rey with the branch.

The premise of the film is a huge problem.  I was already in "WTF" mode when the FIRST LINE of the text crawl says "THE FIRST ORDER RULES THE GALAXY".  What?  This movie takes place 5 seconds after TFA.  The First Order just lost their main base, and only blew up a few planets, so how do they RULE THE GALAXY?  I don't want to go too much into the Canto Bight stuff because pretty much everyone hates that part.  The "Now it's worth it" line was the cringiest in the film.  The bigger problem is the whole space chase/Poe-Holdo thing.  If Holdo tells Poe her plan (keep in mind that the Resistance trusted him with finding the map to Luke BY HIMSELF), then 3/4ths of the movie doesn't need to exist, and she refuses to do so even after he mutinies.  They literally could've taken her out of the film and it would've made more sense.  There would've been a power vacuum while Leia was incapacitated which Poe would've tried to fill, and then Leia returns to "teach Poe his lesson" when Poe makes the more-rash-than-necessary decision.  Then you have Leia staying behind on the ship to zip it through the fleet (as mentioned, this scene looked cool but it has weird implications for the rest of the series), which further cements the lesson Poe learns and forces him to grow into the leader the Resistance needs.  The whole "Holdo and Leia were totally in cahoots with a great plan, the audience should feel bad for doubting her, Poe should learn to obey his superiors without question" setup is garbage.  The First Order is again shown to be bumbling idiotic Disney villains by not trying ANYTHING to stop the Resistance.  They don't launch hundreds of TIEs (even after Kylo takes out their hangar), don't send any other ships to cut them off, nothing.  They also decide not to fire on Finn/Rose while they have their little moment (though they really should both be dead, especially with open canopies on those things).  They also conveniently forgot how to deal with snub fighters (that they've been fighting for 30+ years), when they had homing missiles to shoot down the stolen TIE in the last film.  Nothing involving a Resistance/First Order battle in the next film with have any tension whatsoever.

I'm not completely against what they did with Luke in this film.  It does crush me that Mark Hamill hates what they did so much.  We don't get to see what changed him from the "pure, never willing to give up on my family" farmboy who refused to kill Vader in the hopes of turning him to the bitter old man willing to kill his nephew at the first sign of evil, which is a pretty big change.  I would've liked to see Luke actually teach Rey something.  Rey being this perfect light side force user is simply to promote Disney's message of "Anyone can be a Jedi if they BELIEEEEEVE".  She doesn't struggle with anything (except her parentage, which is squashed in this film).  Luke teaching her some true humility like the "That is why you fail" line from Yoda would've helped her character a lot.  Good thing she learned how to move rocks so she can show up at the end to save the day by moving some rocks!  I do like that Luke decided not to solve everything at the end through violence though.

Ultimately, this film kills off forces of conflict in Snoke, Phasma and Luke, and makes everyone else less interesting by taking away or resolving unsatisfactorily conflicts they had.  Why should anyone care about Ep. 9?  Or Ep. 7 for that matter?  This movie provides nothing on its own, marginalizes its predecessor, and hamstrings its successor.  If you found the one person on Earth who hated Star Wars the most and forced them to make this film, I'm not sure they could've done any worse.

I've been tearing this movie apart up and down the internet, so I didn't want to make the thread here.  I'll sum up in that this is basically a Troll film.  It waves off mysteries Ep. 7 set up that could've led somewhere, and when it offers up a plot choice, it takes the most uninteresting one every time.  Almost every character in the film ends up the same way they started (Kylo and Rey in particular), the humor falls flat on 90% of the jokes, and the premise has so many holes that this movie basically didn't need to exist at all.  It's a bad film, and a bad Star Wars film, and a bad sequel, all at once.

I guess I should add FFXII: The Zodiac Age, but that's a rerelease of a 2006 game so that probably doesn't count.  Loved it then, love it now, extra speed boost option added helped a LOT on my platinum trophy run.

Figured I'd get the ball rolling with a look at where I rank the games I played this year (which were not many). 

1. Horizon Zero Dawn - A combination of "the best" graphics, good gameplay, and a sci-fi story that made me think, and think, and think.  I almost never buy DLC but bought it for this game.
2. Yakuza 0 - Lots of side stuff to do, gritty and emotional story that sucked me in.  Hit baseballs, play pool, darts, Sega arcade games, buy businesses, run a cabaret club, watch women wrestle, watch PG-13 Japanese idol videos, and when you're done with that, get ready to punch the hell outta some jackass Yakuza and get your gut punched with the feels.
3. Nier: Automata - Weird in a lot of good ways.  3D Bayonetta-style combat, 2D bullet-hell shooter, open-world exploration, messes with your expectations like a lot of Kojima games do.
4. Valkyria Chronicles Remastered (2016) - Never played the original on PS3, war-time semi-turn-based tactical strategy.  Unique art-style that they went away from in the sequels which didn't sell nearly as well.  They just announced a Valkyria Chronicles 4 that will tie more closely with this one to get back on track. Surprisingly, has one of the best romances in any game I've played.
5. Street Fighter V (2016) - Has enough content now that it's a pretty good fighter overall.  The last few new characters (Abigail, Menat, Zeku) really impressed me and a lot of people, and the characters announced for season 3 have some hype behind them.  Arcade Edition comes out next month, which is a free upgrade (though you can buy it will all DLC characters in the package).
6. I Am Setsuna (2016) - A simple RPG based on Chrono Trigger.  Piano-only soundtrack is legit, combat system has unnecessary depth due to some brokenly good abilities (never need to try out other characters when one ability wins every battle by itself).  Not a game to play while sad, almost no happy moments, but I believe Setsuna means "sadness" so it's expected.
7. World of Final Fantasy (2016) - "Interesting" game.  Art style is somewhat unique (certainly for FF), gameplay is pokemon with a few twists, fun to see various FF characters from different games interact, has some of the absolute best and absolute worst writing simultaneously.
8. Tales from the Borderlands (2014) - Pretty good story, good characters, good voice acting.  As I mentioned when I played it, just not a fan of this style of game, would rather it be an animated movie as the gameplay is too simple to add anything for me.  Still highly recommended for most people.
9. Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor (2014) - They use the Lord of the Rings franchise and do basically nothing with it.  Almost no story whatsoever, annoying open-world collectables, combat is ok but suffers in the way the Witcher games, Assassin Creed games, and others do, in that the animations are so cinematic and auto-aimy that they feel disjointed from your button presses (i.e. not satisfying).  I never dealt with the "cool" mechanic everyone talks about because I never died, and apparently that's required.
10. Divinity: Original Sin Enhanced Edition (2014) - As documented in the general gaming thread, so many design decisions in this turned me off so much I didn't finish it (finished and got most of the achievements in every other game above).  I don't care about the world, I don't care about any of the characters, and the game tries desperately hard to piss you off with instakill-fail surprises or giving you wrong information.  Only 4.9% of people have the trophy for finishing the game on PS4.

As far as paid Anti-viruses go, I recommend Kaspersky.  I've had it installed on my parents' computer for the last 8 years and never had to deal with any issues (for the last 8 years I fixed computers all day every day so not having to deal with it from my family is nice), and they have NO CLUE how to protect themselves.  I would always just buy it when it went on sale at work for free after rebate instead of renewing it online (since that's usually full price), so basically I've only paid like $50 for 8 years of coverage for them.

I never got too much into trying to get a grail, but I am the type of person that would find the statistical improbability of finding a Tyrael's Might worth taking a minute to ponder and enjoy for its own sake like he did.

Played through the DLC The Frozen Wastes.  Icy/Snowy Mountains are always an interesting terrain option, and the day/night cycle matters quite a bit as it gets pretty freaking dark while it's snowing.  The quests are pretty good, with similar themes of loss and sorrow in the audio logs, and a new ally for the future.  Some of the new weapons are hella fun, with higher damage and bigger AoEs, although they eat up resources like crazy, and one of them can kill you if you hold the fire button too long.

My take on Battlefront in general is that it's supposed to be more fun/arcade-y than the slew of gritty realistic FPS games out there, with fairly big teams as well, so the difference between one person having epic gear and another not having anything doesn't mean that much.  Plus the whole point of Battlefront is to feel like "just another cog in the machine" of a giant intergalactic war, playing as mostly faceless Rebels/Imperials/Droids/etc., so there's context for dying frequently not being unexpected. There's also just as good a chance that the people with the great gear are on your team.

Loot boxes that directly affect quality of play have been around for a while and have not usually caused this much of a ruckus.  I don't think this would have been such a big deal if it weren't for news just beforehand of EA closing Visceral and thus the only other Star Wars game in development (Amy Hennig's project) being canceled.  Despite the length stories detailing all of the different issues, a lot of people assume that EA put all their chips in on Battlefront 2 like "well, if you want to play Star Wars, you have to play Battlefront 2, and if you want to be good, you have to spend a lot more on top of the game".  You didn't actually have to spend anything to get good stuff, but they are using a loot system similar to ME3/DA:I/ME:A where what you get is random, so some reviewers really hated seeing other reviewers already have legendary items before them while they got attachments to Heros they hadn't unlocked yet (guess they've never played any CCGs before).

I will probably buy the game once it goes on sale, because the thing I wanted the most (starfighter modes) has been added.  I've watched some streamers playing it, and it seems fun, although it may get old fast as it's not very deep.

The main game is pure RTS.  However there are thousands of maps in the Arcade section that play very differently and do not require any resource collection at all.
