Mass Effect / Re: All your Base Belongs to Me.

Finished another completion (third I think?). 100% Viability, nearly all quests completed (just missed a couple basic task ones).

Played a soldier/infilitrator style. Sniper rifle at range, Valiant assault rifle modded with full auto just mowed things down when the distance closed. Occasionally broke out the Dhan shotgun for funsies. Mixed in a few tech powers for variety.

The story and characters don't quite live up to Bioware's usual standard, but the combat is so much fun.

Thanks Tim.

Mother in Law was pancreatic cancer (second time having it, which was a death sentence. We were lucky she lived through the first round). Brother was metastatic melanoma - he'd had it for a year and was stable, but there's no real treatment for it (aside from cutting it out) and it was in multiple places in his brain. He just went from being okay to being dead in two weeks.

My family didn't really have cancer in our history until now. My wife's family has a history of pancreatic and stomach cancer, as well as a litany of autoimmune diseases which raise the risk for cancer. We're getting genetic testing done for everyone, just to see.

Details are still be worked out. There will be stores that sell it, regulated by the same agency that regulates liquor stores (not allowed to be sold in the same store though). People will be allowed to grow their own as well, max of 4 plants I think. Weirdly, I think they are waiting a year to allow for the legal sale of edibles - something about needing "additional research".

But, municipalities will be free to adjust the rules within certain limits, so rules will vary slightly from city to city. They won't be able to ban it outright, but might be able to force people to apply for permits to grow it, and ban consumption in public places. We'll see if all the bylaws will hold up to the inevitable court challenges.

Honestly, not much is going to change up here. I don't expect a lot of USA tourism, as I'm north of Washington (where it's already legal at the state level). Might actually have the opposite effect - I know the US border guards have started asking about marijuana usage, and hauling people in for questioning if they admit to ever using pot. That's likely to escalate, and it's not like American Border guards have a great respect for citizenship it seems. Papers please!

Y'all have a fucked up government culture.

On the minus side:

- 6 funerals in 6 months, including my mother-in-law (cancer), younger brother (cancer), grandmother (cancer) and some other relatives and friends.
- Dealing with inheritance/splitting up property is shitty. No one feels good afterwards.
- Middle daughter (10) is showing signs of Autism or OCD.

On the plus side:
- Promotion! Finally landed a job that I had applied for two years ago, and was told I was unqualified. Wound up filling the role temporarily for 8 months this past year (there wasn't anyone else to do it) and convinced the higher ups I could do it. Not a huge pay increase (I work in government) but I'm enjoying the work more than my previous position.
- New computer! It's niiiiiiiiiice.
- Still Canadian

Mixed bag:
- Prepping to go back to school in a year (Masters in Public Administration). Will be nice to go back to school, but it's mostly distance education done in the evenings, so it will be a bit brutal because I'll still be working full time.

Totally worked. Thanks Pix!!!

Motherboard came on Friday, so I spent time on Saturday building. The Meshify C is great case to build in - smaller than my previous Antec case but really spacious with excellent cable management. Build went well, aside from the fact that I somehow reversed the polarity on the case power switch, so it wouldn't turn on. Figured that out, only to be stumped with the fact that my mouse and keyboard wouldn't work in the Windows setup (but worked in the BIOS). Finally got my keyboard to work, Windows install went really smoothly (seriously, Windows 10 install was the fastest and cleanest I've ever experienced). Drivers updated, some minor tweaking. Then it was time to take it for a spin.

Loaded up Witcher 3 and HOOOOOOOLLLLLYY SHHIIIIIIIITTTT. Ultra settings, with 60fps. Oh. My. God. I have been missing out.

Honestly, I haven't even half filled my 500gb SDD. I feel like 1 TB is overkill, but would rather have the space in case I need it.

I think I have a Win7 DVD around somewhere. Can you upgrade for free still?

Yeah, that's quite a difference. Guess M2 it is.

I use the Logitech G430s (wired, with mic). They're decent, although the mic is cracked at the elbow from them falling off the stand. Not the most comfortable for long periods, but definitely serviceable.

Sennheiser make the most comfortable headphones I've ever put on my head.

Finally ready to pull the trigger on a new system. Been a few years since I upgraded, and decided I should go brand new. Interested in thoughts/perspectives - Ryzen or Intel? Nvidia GPU, right? Stay with my Samsung 256GB EVO 2.5" Sata SDD, or move to M2 SSD?

I might have some parts to cannibalize from my current system. However, catch is that my computer has started to randomly BSOD, and I can't figure out what the hell is causing it. Different error message each time, all scans I've run are coming up clean. No need for a monitor or peripherals, just the tower.

Would like to stay within a budget of $1600CAD, but that's proving to be tough as I'm really trying to squeeze in a 1070Ti (unless I go Ryzen, which seems like it's cheaper).

It's pretty sweet on a 1080. :D

Don't know if I'll be able to go that high, but yeah.

Also, Cora for life.

Too bad it fell so far short of your expectations. Like Pix, I found to be a decent game. There are definitely some issues, but combat was not one of them for me. ME:A is my favorite out of all the ME games for combat. It's fluid, and flexible, and while the companions still die pretty useless deaths occasionally it feels vastly improved and superior to the pause and click style of ME1.

Considering that the entire story and planets were all built in basically a year and a half, I'm actually amazed at what they managed to accomplish.

I'm hoping to do a complete upgrade of my system in the near future, and Andromeda is pretty high on my list to play through with a much beefier video card.  ;D

Music / Podcasts?
« on: February 18, 2018, 11:03:51 PM »
Not a music topic per se, but figured it was the most appropriate subforum.

Any podcast recommendations? I subscribe to a few:

- The TSN Hockey Bobcast with Bob McKenzie. Hockey related (obviously), but Bob is a legendary insider with some fantastic stories and great perspective. The podcast isn't always about hockey - it often includes discussion on TV series, wine, and testicular cancer.

- Still Untitled: The Adam Savage Project. Adam Savage is an uber nerd, in the best kind of way.

- The Ongoing History of New Music. One of the longest running radio shows cataloging the history and development of Alternative music. If you can catch the live radio show on 102.1 the Edge (Toronto Alt Rock station), you'll get the full show. Sadly, the podcast only includes 6 second song clips due to licensing fees. Over 800 episodes and counting!

Any recommendations?
