It's actually a reasonably short game,  so may be easier to tackle with than, say, Witcher 3 ;)

That's true.  But a certain MMO addicted mutual friend of ours got me into FFXIV...

So many good MMOs out there... and you pick that one to get hooked on?  8)

Hey the latest expansion has been getting really great reviews and I'm a sucker for the series.  So far I've played the following MMOs (that I can remember):

World of Warcraft
FFXIV
FFXI
Tera
EVE Online
LOTRO
Guild Wars 2
Dark Age of Camelot

Of these I think this is the one I've enjoyed the second most.  The gameplay is serviceable but I am really enjoying the fact that the storyline is core to the game - something a lot of MMOs seem to ignore in favour of just random grinds and dungeons.

I've played:

Elder Scrolls Online (the best MMO)
FF XIV
Guild Wars 1 & 2
The Secret World
Secret World Legends (much improved over TSW)
LOTRO
D&D Online
Neverwinter
TERA
Defiance
Black Desert Online
Marvel Heroes
Wildstar
The Division
EVE Online
Kritika
And a crapload of f2p Korean/Russian/whatever games that are momentarily entertaining but mostly crap.

ESO is the best of them by far (now, but it was awful on launch). Secret World Legends is good. Wildstar is moderately entertaining. FF14 is pretty good as a world (if you can ignore the lala race), but has the most godawful boring combat ever. TERA is terrible as an MMO but a lot of fun as an action game. LOTRO is good if you can past how dated it is. Neverwinter is poop on a stick. The Division is fun for a while until you get tired of bullet sponge enemies. Black Desert Online alternates between "this is great" and "wtf am I doing" for me. Defiance was a flop.

Currently I'm still subbed to ESO but on a break to play some GW2 at the behest of a friend. It's still not a good game, but it's not as awful as it once was. At least it's free (well, no sub).

We're clearly at an impasse as WoW is obviously the best MMO and my FFXIV character is a Lalafell  :D

Also I'm stunned you can criticise FF14s combat (which is medicore) and support any Elder Scrolls combat (which in all I've played is universally terrible).

I've never played WoW.

I'm also amused that I left FF14 off my list. Remedied.

ESO's combat is fun. The effects are great. Lots of strategy to build planning. Tons of possibilities/diversity in classes (e.g. I'm playing a dual dagger wielding, armor wearing, melee sorceress who focuses on stamina instead of magicka).

Lalas are terrible. Catgirls ftw.  8) But at least they're not nearly as awful as Elin in TERA. Pure pedo-bait there.

In fairness, I haven't played ESO. Was judging purely on Morrowind and skyrim  :D

Thanks for the reviews/comments.  I've been thinking of spending the 30 bucks to give it whirl after the read a bit about the game.  Looked like it would be right up my alley.  Just need to remember the headphones as I tend to play game with the sound off and this game really needs sound.

I would say this game is literally unplayable without sound.

There is no HUD, at all, ever. Your cues in combat come from visual effects and sound. Hints and direction on what to do and where to go all come from sound. Etc.

So my son got me the game for my birthday.  I've installed it but haven't played it yet.  Maybe if I get a chance tonight after work.  Can't normally have sound on as I'm usually playing in the living room on my laptop while either the wife or kids are watching tv
