Gaming General / Re: Starcraft 2 going Free to play soon

Campaign mission design has gotten quite a bit more sophisticated since the 90s; plenty of missions are of the hero RPG variety with no basebuilding or offer objectives other than the standard annihilation type.

Here is a specific rundown of everything that will be available to you for free:
  • The original Wings of Liberty campaign. Experience the original epic campaign that kicked off the StarCraft II saga! If you picked up Wings of Liberty previously but haven’t come back to StarCraft II in a while, we’ve got good news for you too—if you purchased Wings of Liberty prior to October 31, 2017, you’ll receive the second installment in StarCraft II’s campaign, the zerg-focused Heart of the Swarm, as a limited time offer from November 8 to December 8. Make sure to log in during that window to claim it!

  • You will be able to access the ranked multiplayer ladder to compete with other players to become the best of the best, complete with all of the multiplayer units from Wings of Liberty, Heart of the Swarm, and Legacy of the Void. All you have to do to unlock it permanently is earn 10 First Wins of the Day in Unranked or Versus A.I. play—our way to preserve the quality and integrity of the ranked experience.

  • Current and upcoming Co-op Commanders are available to play for free up to level five, and the level restriction for weekly mutations has been removed. You’ll be able to tackle these extra challenging missions with your friends right away. The Co-op Commanders Raynor, Kerrigan, and Artanis will remain completely free, meaning that you can keep leveling them to your heart’s content.

Quake Live is dead, but Quake Champions is playable right now.

GAF is back up after two days of downtime while Evilore was busy concocting a statement, but it feels like walking through a disaster zone right now. The general discussion sections put up a semblance of looking active, but people are still being banned for asking questions about what happened when they're not being shouted down by people who want to "just focus on games" and "wait for the facts" - both of which were bannable things to say just a couple of weeks ago when the Harvey Weinstein case broke. The community sections are straight up dead, despite really being the heart of the forum in the past.

I'm not sure how long the positivity over at ResetEra is going to last, but as of now, it seems pretty healthy and the staff seems to be genuinely trying to make things work.

GAF's requirement of a work/school email and manual verification for registration meant that it was comparatively kid-unfriendly.

With that being said, forums are a dying breed in general. It sucks that the future is being raised on platforms with no preservation, but I'm just an old man yelling at clouds, I suppose.

Well, I guess it might have been a while ago? The moderation took a decidedly progressive bent during Gamergate and it was positively militant during the election cycle (one of their admins was apparently removed for banning hundreds of Trump supporters without cause during that period), and a lot of it spilled over to the gaming side too.

I suppose this conversation is kind of moot unless Evilore actually follows through with his promise to put the site up again soon, but your experience seems unusual given how often GAF is slagged on by the rest of the internet for being the biggest "SJW" bastion.

So, NeoGaf is dead because the owner is scum. Much lulz. Where will all those wanker gaffers go now?  ;D
I'm not gonna front; I miss it already and I have zero expectation that any of the replacements sprouting up like mushrooms after a forest fire will have any longevity.

It's dumb that it took Harvey Weinstein to get people acknowledging that Evilore's assaulted women when it's been common knowledge since 2012, but it is what it is.

What I've never understood is why you in particular dislike it so much. On paper, it seems to be everything you'd like:
-explicitly liberal on both the gaming and off-topic sides
-protective of LGBT
-tons of PC gamers
-dedicated subcommunities for whatever franchise/interest you might want
-huge fans of niche games, especially with female protagonists

Incidentally, if you haven't played VA-11 Hall-A, you might enjoy it.

Unless you're committing to one of the longer term purchase options (which I wouldn't recommend), you're better off thinking of it as just a $12 bundle available for an entire month at a time.

You can game the system a bit to save extra money; the first Humble Monthly purchase on any given account is eligible for a 10% off coupon with purchase of virtually any other Humble PC game bundle, so you can save a bit of money by making a new account every month. If there's a bundle showing up during the month that you're interested in, buy it on the dummy account and buy the Monthly on that account to save the $1.20. If there isn't, you can buy the $1 tier of whatever bundle is available and it'll still give you the coupon.

There may also be a referral option available in your main account for Monthly purchases; if your second account uses that link to purchase the monthly it'll give your main account $5 of credit.

Thanks!  Going to take a break from 1.1x HC and give 1.07 a spin.  I tried it eons ago (2003, maybe?) but never really made it through.  I reinstalled 1.07, but the game requires a physical CD in the drive, and I have neither a physical CD nor a CD drive.  I looked into Daemon Tools, but it seems adware-heavy now; is there a reliable no-cd crack and/or copy protection bypass for 1.07?

Yeah, historically it hasn't been anything worth getting excited about.

no more steam inventory gifts

Can't say I like this.

I've had both a PS4 and an XB1 for most of the generation.

PS4 is definitely a better complement to a PC since it has both more true exclusives and system exclusives. At only about $200 for a new console during sales this past year, I'd definitely recommend looking into picking one up at some point.

My XB1 gets more playtime, though, since I'm quite fond of all those linear singleplayer shooters/action games that the internet hates, and I'd rather play them on there than on PC.

It's definitely possible; he both talks about A5 being academic in the writeup and finishes the run in the video.
