Podcasts?
« on: February 18, 2018, 11:03:51 PM »
Not a music topic per se, but figured it was the most appropriate subforum.

Any podcast recommendations? I subscribe to a few:

- The TSN Hockey Bobcast with Bob McKenzie. Hockey related (obviously), but Bob is a legendary insider with some fantastic stories and great perspective. The podcast isn't always about hockey - it often includes discussion on TV series, wine, and testicular cancer.

- Still Untitled: The Adam Savage Project. Adam Savage is an uber nerd, in the best kind of way.

- The Ongoing History of New Music. One of the longest running radio shows cataloging the history and development of Alternative music. If you can catch the live radio show on 102.1 the Edge (Toronto Alt Rock station), you'll get the full show. Sadly, the podcast only includes 6 second song clips due to licensing fees. Over 800 episodes and counting!

Any recommendations?

Some stuff I would recommend:
  • The Adventure Zone - http://www.maximumfun.org/shows/adventure-zone - A D&D podcast which is hilarious.  When I had it recommended to me I thought it would be really dull, but it's actually really great.  If you don't want to go through them rolling up their characters and such start on Episode 1.5
  • Designer Notes - https://www.idlethumbs.net/designernotes - Soren Johnson (of Civ 4 and Offworld Trading Company) interviews various game designers.  Some of these are super interesting
  • Revisionist History - http://revisionisthistory.com/ - Malcolm Gladwell goes back and looks at events in history that have either been overlooked or misunderstood.  Again, some super interesting one in here.  I really liked the one about Basketball even though I have no interest in the sport
  • Three Moves Ahead - https://www.idlethumbs.net/3ma/ - Basically a podcast dedicated to strategy games (mostly computer, sometimes board).  This is one of my favourite genres so I really like this podcast

I mostly listen to gaming podcasts:

Easy Allies - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Knsm9kUlJBc&list=PLwa6fmqvU-4EfI6ru6D1HytGbMdooHPO9  The former Gametrailers.com crew now independent.  They actually have multiple podcasts, though this is their main one that covers gaming news.  "Frame Trap" covers in-depth into the games they are playing (very long freeform discussions), Friend Code covers Nintendo and their games, and Reaction Shots covers movies/TV.
Retronauts - https://retronauts.com  They've been going for over 10 years, first as part of 1up.com, now independent.  They mostly cover older games or companies that are forgotten now.
Co-optional Podcast - On TotalBiscuit's Youtube channel.  The quality has dipped over the years but it's fun to watch Dodger and Jesse derail the show so much just to piss TB off.  They have some interesting guests on sometimes and cover the week's gaming releases at the end.
Axe of the Blood God - https://www.usgamer.net/archive?tag=axe-of-the-blood-god  Usgamer's RPG podcast hosted by Kat Bailey and Nadia Oxford (yes, a gaming podcast hosted by 2 ladies)
Transporter Room 3 - IGN's Star Trek podcast.  I haven't listened to it much lately due to them trying very hard to like Star Trek Discovery, but they do know quite a bit about the series and can make you laugh at some of the worst ST episodes.
