PCs / Re: Favorite Anti-virus Software?
« on: December 01, 2017, 01:50:23 PM »
It feels like I've spent a lot of money on anti-virus over the years.

I'm currently using Norton 360 Premier and as far as I know it's kept me safe. Last week I got a notification indicating that they would automatically renew for another year at $125 cdn which is bloody crazy so I'm looking to switch as well.

In regards to Panda, I find it difficult to accept that a free product is going to keep me safe online. Do you guys feel safe banking on line or making purchases on line having it as your only line of defence against troublemakers? Any caveats?

Free AV is fine. I've never found AV to be something worth spending money on. And no, it's not your only line of defense. It's the last line of defense. The first is being a smart user. No AV is good enough to make up for irresponsible use. ;)

I've never had a malware infection. I use my PC for everything, including personal banking, loan/credit management, and handling sensitive work data.

Note that I also run MalwareBytes, too, just for an added layer of security (this one I paid for - I bought a lifetime license for like $50 years ago).

AV Comparatives does monthly testing of bunches of AV suites and you can see how they all stack up.

Also, Norton is widely regarded as its own special kind of evil because once you have it, getting rid of it is almost as hard as getting rid of malware. Plus, it's not very good. 8)

I've been an advocate of Panda for a couple years now. It's free, fast, effective, and never bugs you... Well, at first it will try to convince you to upgrade to the paid version but after it gives up, you'll never hear from it again unless it actually finds a problem.

Bonus - it's good at not false-positive-blocking games and stuff. (fuck you, BitDefender and Avast)

Uncharted: The Lost Legacy is still in stock at Target for $15 if you wanna save a bit more.

I missed that one. Oh well, what's $5? I still got it for a price I feel ok with. :)

General Discussion / Black Friday sales

Anyone scooping up anything cool?

I refuse to leave the house on Black Friday because screw that craziness. But I did dispatch a friend to Gamestop yesterday to pick up the new Uncharted for $20 for me. So far I haven't seen anything else that has compelled me to buy it, though I might maybe be tempted by a Ninja blender so I can properly blend all the blendable things...

Except that it totally was.

The path that EA took on this was bullshit of the absolute highest order and I'm glad it backfired on them to the point that it's being looked into as gambling disguised as a game.

It was pay-to-win taken to a ludicrous extreme.

They've temporarily removed the real money shop but it will be back once the furor fades, no doubt.

This sort of asshattery should not be supported or encouraged, and you should not buy this game.

The close range blasting sorcerer is like... stupidly overpowered. I've run a few and holy crap. The skills just synergize so damn well. All stamina, the hurricane skill, a clannfear for emergency healing and tanking bro-buddy, the sword/shield skill that reduces resistance... melee sorc ftw.

I'd consider it but... switching browsers used to be a quick n easy thing. But now I have all my extensions, and themes, and password manager, and etc to consider. It's just too much to bother with. I'll stick with Chrome, though I have heard good stuff about the latest Firefox.

Elex:

What happens when a German game developer says "we should combine Fallout, Mass Effect, and Skyrim into one game."

It's pretty awesome. A bit janky but not as bad as previous Piranha Bytes games (Gothic, etc).

Axes, swords, plasma weapons, explosives, magic, psi powers, and chems all in one open-world RPG? Sign me up!

Worth checking out.

But if a game is terrible, free is too much!

Apparently the game really wants me to have two of every unique it gives me.

"Oh, Leoric's Crown. Neat."
"Huh. Another one. I guess Leoric mass produced these..."
"Goldwrap... And another Goldwrap..."
