In case you haven't heard, there's a new Star Wars game announced:

No microtransactions, no loot boxes, no DLC, no multi-player. Just single-player gamingness.

The Argument Chamber / Freedom and security of information

What are your views on infosec?

I have pretty much given up. After a decade as a hardcore linux guy, doing everything I possibly could to secure my info and data, I've had enough of it. Having a cellphone pretty much guarantees a huge personal data loss. Mitigated with iPhone but even then not completely secure.  With programs like Raptor, Prism, etc... they are in the backbone. Every major player on the 'net is in Prism, giving your personal data to Five Eyes nations. Even if they weren't, the gov't literally has a line into the backbone. No matter what you do, or what you use, they have your info.

So, I've given up. I'm now using Gmail instead of protonmail. And other google services. I'm using Windows 10. It does everything I need an OS to do, has free updates for life, and doesn't get in my way. I don't have to configure the fuck out of it and spend energy and time keeping it up like Linux. It has games and doesn't start at $1,799 unlike Mac. So I've made an acceptable (to me) trade. I know I'm being monitored, like everyone else. I accept it as a business cost and move on with my life.

There really is no point in trying to be safe anymore, it seems, outside of the basics of common sense (I wouldn't post my credit card here, etc...) The money to be made is in mass collection of large data sets, which means we're all getting mined everywhere. Cellphone, websites, even our OS.

So I've made my peace and I don't worry about it anymore, after decades of near tinfoil-hat data paranoia.

What are your views?

PCs / "Gaming" mice
« on: March 13, 2019, 01:44:33 PM »
So I'm using an Amazon Basics mouse. I feel that my accuracy in games is pretty poor, and I think some of it might have to do with my mouse. Do gaming mice improve accuracy? Do they have a higher "resolution"? If so, I think it might be worth an investment.

Gaming General / SWTOR - worth a try?

Does anyone have any experience with this title? Is it worth playing? I understand it's free now.

Gaming General / Original Diablo now on GOG

It's been spruced up a bit to run under Windows 10 in a collaborative effort between Blizzard and GOG. I'll be getting it later today. It's been a loooooong time.

Gaming General / Morrowind - how to get widescreen support

So I can only get 4:3 resolutions in Morrowind GOTY. Any clues how to get widescreen support? Is it possible?

Gaming General / Games resolution question
« on: February 17, 2019, 09:37:58 PM »
So on my coming laptop, from youtube videos it looks like, in general, games get 30 FPS on 1080p at low to medium settings, and 60+ FPS at 768p at high to ultra settings.

Which looks better, higher setting and frames or higher resolution?

Gaming General / Games to look at on PC
« on: February 14, 2019, 08:19:03 PM »
So I haven't payed attention to PC gaming in over a decade. Had my MacBook, and before that ran Linux for a long time. So, to say I'm out of the loop is an understatement.
Any recommendations on games I should look out for? I already know I'm getting Skyrim and Monster Hunter World. Other than that, I'm clueless.

Gaming General / Skyrim on computer
« on: February 13, 2019, 01:51:05 PM »
So I ordered my Dell with an Nvidia card. It can play Skyrim at 1080p at 30FPS. I'm currently playing it on the Switch. Will there be a big upgrade graphically going to the PC? I'm just excited to try it. I have no idea what mods, etc... to use. Before getting my switch I played it via PS3, so I've never had access to mods. So what kind of graphical jump can I expect?

PCs / Going to get a new Dell. Need opinions.
« on: February 09, 2019, 07:28:00 PM »
So it's between these 2.
The first one has a few more bells and whistles, like aluminim case, backlit keyboard, etc... but it mostly comes down to an i5 with an MX150, versus a Ryzen 5 system. My gaming will be casual, but it would be nice to have a decent experience when I do. Thoughts?

What are your predictions for the Super Bowl? My prediction is a Patriots win, 23-14.
